Social support for individuals with psychosis is associated with decreased symptom severity, improved outcomes, and recovery. In adolescents, declining social support prior to the first hospitalization has been shown to predict time to relapse, which may have implications for early intervention. Data were collected on adolescents (n=84) following a first hospitalization for a psychotic episode in order to examine how change in social support relates to the duration and type of untreated symptoms. Most adolescents experienced a decline in social support (n=46) prior to index hospitalization. Ch

OBJECTIVE: Affective symptoms are common and associated with poor cognitive outcomes in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, their underlying neural correlations remain poorly understood.
METHODS: This study included 105 patients with AD. Patients were classified into an AD with affective symptoms (AD-A) group and an AD without affective symptoms (AD-NA) group according to scores obtained on the depression and anxiety items of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory. All of the participants underwent neuropsychological assessments and multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.

OBJECTIVE: In this prospective cohort analysis, we examined 12-month trajectories of cognitive function, affective symptoms, and self-care in older adults with heart failure (HF) and evaluated whether baseline frailty modified these changes.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 124 adults aged ≥60 years hospitalized for acute HF were assessed at baseline and at 6 and 12 months. Cognitive function was measured using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), affective symptoms using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and self-care

INTRODUCTION: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is one of the most frequently diagnosed disorders in psychiatric settings. Beyond the categorical diagnosis, borderline personality traits (BPT) are common in the general population and vary along a continuum from mild to severe. While prior research has reported functional connectivity alterations in the default mode network (DMN), the salience network (SN), and the central-executive network (CEN) in patients with BPD, the impairment of these networks in subclinical BPT remain underexplored. To fill this gap, this study aims to investigate d

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of standardised psychometric data in electronic health record (EHR)-based research. Proxy measures of symptom severity based on patients' clinical records may be useful surrogates in mental health EHR research.
AIMS: This study aimed to validate proxy tools for the short versions of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS-6), Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS-6) and Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS-6).
METHOD: A cross-sectional, multicentre study was conducted in a sample of 116 patients with first-episode psychosis from 12 public hospitals in

BACKGROUND: Touch is an essential form of mother-child interaction, instigating better social bonding and emotional stability.
METHODS: We used diffuse optical tomography to explore the relationship between total haemoglobin (HbT) responses to affective touch in the child's brain at two years of age and maternal self-reported prenatal depressive symptoms (EPDS). Affective touch was implemented via slow brushing of the child's right forearm at 3 cm/s and non-affective touch via fast brushing at 30 cm/s and HbT responses were recorded on the left hemisphere.
RESULTS: We discovered a cluster in

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have highlighted the relevance of perfectionism, self-esteem, and anxio-depressive symptoms in anorexia nervosa (AN). However, the relationships between these factors and cardinal eating disorders (ED) symptoms remain unclear, particularly in AN subtypes. This study aimed to examine their interconnections using network analysis.
METHOD: The sample included n = 338 inpatients with AN who completed the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire, Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Using ne

Affective disorders (AD, including bipolar disorder, BD, and major depressive disorder) are severe recurrent illnesses. Identifying neural markers of processes underlying AD development in at-risk youth can provide objective, "early-warning" signs that may predate onset or worsening of symptoms. Using data (n = 34) from the Bipolar Offspring Study, we examined relationships between neural response in regions supporting executive function, and those supporting self-monitoring, during an emotional n-back task (focusing on the 2-back face distractor versus the 0-back no-face control conditions) a

Perfectionism is hypothesized to contribute to the etiology of anorexia nervosa (AN). However, there is little research regarding whether individuals with AN can be classified according to maladaptive (e.g., evaluative concerns) and adaptive (e.g., high personal standards) facets of perfectionism that predict distinct outcomes and might warrant different intervention approaches. In this study, a latent profile analysis was conducted using data from adults with AN (n = 118). Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (Frost et al. Cognitive Therapy and Research, 14(5), 449-46, 1990) subscales w

Given the important role of family environment in children's psychological development, the objective of this study was to examine the linkages between family factors at the whole, dyadic, and individual levels and two dimensions (affective and behavioral) of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) symptoms in Chinese children. Participants comprised of 80 father-child dyads and 169 mother-child dyads from families with ODD children. The results indicated that multilevel family factors were differently associated with children's affective and behavioral ODD symptoms. All the family factors at the

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the relationship between parental affective temperaments and the oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) symptoms of children with ADHD.
METHOD: The sample consisted of 542 treatment-naive children with ADHD and their biological parents. Children were assessed via both parent- and teacher-rated behavioral disorder scales. Parental affective temperament and ADHD symptoms were measured by self-report inventories. The relationships between psychiatric variables were evaluated using structural equation modeling.
RESULTS: According to paren

PURPOSE: Previous studies have reported associations of depressive symptoms with pro-inflammatory cytokines, especially with interleukin-6 (IL-6) in noncancer subjects and cancer patients. Meanwhile, symptoms such as tiredness and appetite loss may be vegetative symptoms of depression when associated with other diagnostic criteria of depression. Such vegetative-type symptoms worsen during the last 6 months of life in cancer patients and may not be associated with affective depressive symptoms such as sadness and nervousness. This study explored associations between depressive symptoms and plas

ABSTRACTDepression is associated with increased maintenance of negative affect (NA) and reduced - blunted and short-lived - maintenance of positive affect (PA). Studies have focused on factors associated with the maintenance of NA, specifically, the emotion regulation strategy of brooding and the capacity to hold negative affective experiences in working memory (WM). Despite its theoretical importance, less attention has been given to factors associated with the maintenance of PA in depression. This study aims to synthesise factors playing a role in the maintenance of both NA and PA. Specifica

BACKGROUND: Cough and sputum production (symptoms of bronchitis) are common in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Extrapulmonary comorbidities, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and post-nasal drip, also cause bronchitis symptoms. The impact of extrapulmonary comorbidities on the severity of bronchitis symptoms in COPD is unknown. The aim of this study was to quantify bronchitis symptoms and assess the impact of GERD and nasal symptoms on the severity of bronchitis symptoms in COPD.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, stable COPD patients were recruited and complet

OBJECTIVES: The present study explores the relationship between the mentalization of distinct affect categories and the severity of borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms. Mentalization is assessed by both the level of verbal elaboration (VE) achieved by discrete affects (explicit mentalization) and the proportion of these individual affects in verbal expression (implicit mentalization).
DESIGN AND METHODS: Sixty-four outpatients completed a series of questionnaires and took part in an interview designed to produce eight relationship episodes that involved four basic emotions: sadness

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests gender differences may exist in bipolar disorder, and a review of the literature shows that more women than men may experience rapid-cycling bipolar disorder. The issues contributing to these gender differences are unknown; a number of case reports have indicated the possibility of mood changes secondary to hormonal influences during the menstrual cycle. We sought to examine the relationship between bipolar disorder and menstrual cycle-related mood changes. To our knowledge, this is one of the largest samples in the literature addressing this issue.

A previously described test for prosopo-affective agnosia (impairment of facial affect recognition) had been applied in 14 disoriented elderly patients with chronic organic brain syndrome, 14 fully oriented elderly patients with non-organic psychiatric disorders, and 14 normal volunteers. In this re-test study of 37 of the 42 subjects, after a six-month interval, the test was found to be reliable (r = .75, p less than .001). The test was also more sensitive in detecting organic disorders than were other frequently applied neuropsychiatric tests. Prosopo-affective agnosia (PAA) appeared unrelat
