Leukocyte telomere length (LTL) varies significantly across human populations, with individuals of African ancestry having longer LTL than non-Africans. However, the genetic and environmental drivers of LTL variation in Africans remain largely unknown. We report here on the relationship between LTL, genetics, and a variety of environmental and climatic factors in ethnically diverse African adults (n = 1,818) originating from Botswana, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Cameroon. We observe significant variation in LTL among populations, finding that the San hunter-gatherers from Botswana have the longest

Vitamin D levels in people of African descent are often described as inadequate or deficient. Whether low vitamin D levels in people of African descent lead to compromised bone or cardiometabolic health is unknown. Clarity on this issue is essential because if clinically significant vitamin D deficiency is present, vitamin D supplementation is necessary. However, if vitamin D is metabolically sufficient, vitamin D supplementation could be wasteful of scarce resources and even harmful. In this review vitamin D physiology is described with a focus on issues specific to populations of African des

BackgroundGenomic research in dementia in Africa is of utmost importance based on recent reports from studies on African-Americans that the African ancestral gene is associated with a lower risk effect for developing AD. However, dementia-related genetic studies are still evolving in sub-Saharan Africa, with unique challenges influencing participant recruitment.ObjectiveThis study sought to identify key challenges of recruitment and retention how they were mitigated in the READD-ADSP Africa and 'Origins of AD in African ancestry' genetic studies.MethodsA qualitative narrative research design u

Mutation rates have long been measured as averages across many genomic positions. Recently, a method to measure the rates of individual mutations was applied to a narrow region in the human hemoglobin subunit beta (HBB) gene containing the site of the hemoglobin S (HbS) mutation as well as to a paralogous hemoglobin subunit delta (HBD) region, in sperm samples from sub-Saharan African and northern European donors [Melamed et al., Genome Res. 32, 488-498 (2022)]. The HbS mutation, which protects against malaria while causing sickle-cell anemia in homozygotes, originated de novo significantly mo

People of African descent have a reported higher incidence of multiple myeloma (MM) and increased prevalence of its precursor conditions, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and smoldering MM (SMM). Despite this, research focusing on people of African descent remains sparse. Even in the absence of robust studies across African populations, major disparities are consistently reported. West Africans and South African Black men have a higher prevalence of MGUS than individuals of European descent. MM has been shown to occur in African individuals at a younger age of diagnosi

Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains the leading cause of dementia worldwide and continues to pose a substantial therapeutic challenge. Although recent advances in disease-modifying treatments targeting amyloid-β pathology have generated cautious optimism, their translational impact is limited by persistent gaps in population and geographic representation within clinical trials. African populations, the most genetically diverse worldwide, remain markedly underrepresented in AD genomic and therapeutic studies. This gap limits the identification of ancestry-specific genetic risk factors and differen

Cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) is an autoimmune disease of the skin, occurring with or without systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). People with African ancestry have a higher risk than people with other ancestries of developing lupus1 but have been underrepresented in genetic studies. We whole-genome-sequenced 27,820 Americans with genetically inferred African ancestry from the Diverse Ancestry Cohort, including people with CLE (n = 211) and/or SLE (n = 574). We discovered an association with a rare missense variant in IKBKB, rs115698972G>A, IKKβE502K, exclusive to people with African ance

BACKGROUND: Need-altruism (a preference to help people in need) and kin-altruism (a preference to help kin over non-kin) underlie two hypotheses for voluntary blood donation: (i) Need-altruism underlies motivations for volunteer blood donation and (ii) Black people express a stronger preference for kin-altruism, which is a potential barrier to donation. This paper tests these hypotheses and explores how need- and kin-altruism are associated with wider altruistic motivations, barriers, and strategies to encourage donation.
METHODS: We assessed need- and kin-altruism, other mechanisms-of-altrui

People with skin of color constitute a wide range of racial and ethnic groups-including Africans, African Americans, African Caribbeans, Chinese and Japanese, Native American Navajo Indians, and certain groups of fair-skinned persons (eg, Indians, Pakistanis, Arabs), and Hispanics. It has been predicted that people with skin of color will constitute a majority of the United States and international populations in the 21st century. There is not a wealth of data on racial and ethnic differences in skin and hair structure, physiology, and function. What studies do exist involve small patient popu

The purpose of the current study was to investigate relationships between maxillary sinus (MS) dimensions and the bony structures associated with the infraorbital nerve (ION). Computed tomographic scans of 87 adult crania (174 sides) from four morphologically diverse groups (West Africans, East Africans, North Asians, Europeans) were utilized. Seven primary variables were collected: infraorbital canal (IOC) type; infraorbital foramen (IOF) shape; distance from the foramen rotundum to IOF (FR-IOF); distance from the posterior wall of the infraorbital groove to IOF (IOG-IOF); and MS length, brea

BACKGROUND: Kataegis, the focal hypermutation of single base positions in tumour genomes, has received little attention with regards to prostate cancer (PCa) molecular features, tumour evolution and associated clinical presentation. Most notably, the impact of this phenomenon is yet to be explored across ancestral lineages representing the extremities of PCa presentation and outcomes, with men of African ancestry disproportionately disadvantaged. The purpose of this study is to address the knowledge gap through African inclusive multi-ancestral interrogation. METHODS: We assessed for ancestral

Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD) represents a growing public health burden, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Yet, most studies focus on Non-Hispanic white (NHW) populations from high-income countries. This study investigates plasma proteomic signatures associated with amyloid pathology in African populations. Nigerian older adults from the VALIANT study and participants from a Tanzanian study, with available biomarker quantification in plasma are employed. For proteomic comparison, participants from the Canadian TRIAD cohort are included, capturing a distinct popu

Over the past few years, there has been increased visibility of, and attention paid to, enduring issues such as racial discrimination toward Black Americans. Black psychologists have been called upon to explain various race-related mental health issues to the public, as well as their colleagues and students. Discussions about how to heal from persistent, intergenerational, oppressive attacks on the African psyche are important, but the theories and treatments in which most practitioners are trained and considered "best practices" are Eurocentric in nature. African-centered (or Africentric) psy

Over 40,000 people are now living with diagnosed HIV in the UK. There is, however, uncertainty about how people with HIV use religion or spirituality to cope with their infection. Adopting a modified grounded theory approach, we analysed individual and group interviews with the people most affected by HIV in the UK: black African heterosexual men and women and gay men (mostly white). For the majority of black African heterosexual men and women in our study, religion was extremely important. We found that gay men in the study were less religious than black Africans, although many were spiritual

OBJECTIVE: To study the incidence of different histological types of bladder cancer in various racial groups living within the same geographical region.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 615 new patients with bladder cancer seen at three Provincial hospitals in Durban from January 1980 to January 1990. The patients were classified as Caucasian (white people of European descent). African (indigenous black people), Asian (people originating from the Indian subcontinent) or Coloured (people of mixed race). The bladder tumours were classified according to standard histopathological criteri
