Subtypes of aggression in intermittent explosive disorder.

Research in aggression has distinguished two major subtypes of aggressive behavior: hostile and instrumental. Previous research has examined these subtypes in healthy individuals and forensic samples but not in intermittent explosive disorder (IED), a disorder characterized by recurrent and severe aggressive behavior. We examined aggression subtypes in individuals with IED, healthy subjects, and psychiatric control subjects. We also considered the relationship between aggression subtypes and measures of trait anger and impulsivity to evaluate whether the hostile/instrumental dichotomy adequate

Haloperidol for long-term aggression in psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Psychotic disorders can lead some people to become agitated. Characterised by restlessness, excitability and irritability, this can result in verbal and physically aggressive behaviour - and both can be prolonged. Aggression within the psychiatric setting imposes a significant challenge to clinicians and risk to service users; it is a frequent cause for admission to inpatient facilities. If people continue to be aggressive it can lengthen hospitalisation. Haloperidol is used to treat people with long-term aggression. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether haloperidol alone, administered o

Resident Aggression and Abuse in Assisted Living.

This article estimates the prevalence and identifies risk factors of resident aggression and abuse in assisted living facilities. We conducted multivariate analyses of resident-level data from an analytic sample of 6,848 older Americans in the 2010 National Survey of Residential Care Facilities. Nationwide, 7.6% of assisted living residents engaged in physical aggression or abuse toward other residents or staff in the past month, 9.5% of residents had exhibited verbal aggression or abuse, and 2.0% of resident engaged in sexual aggression or abuse toward other residents or staff. Dementia and s

"Blurred lines?" Sexual aggression and barroom culture.

BACKGROUND: Meeting potential sexual/romantic partners for mutual pleasure is one of the main reasons young adults go to bars. However, not all sexual contacts are positive and consensual, and aggression related to sexual advances is a common experience. Sometimes such aggression is related to misperceptions in making and receiving sexual advances while other times aggression reflects intentional harassment or other sexually aggressive acts. This study uses objective observational research to assess quantitatively gender of initiators and targets and the extent that sexual aggression involves

The evolution of humor from male aggression.

The response to seeing a man riding a unicycle was reported to be consistently related to the viewer's sex and stage of physical development. To see if this observation was universal, observations of responses were collected from 23 male and 9 female unicyclists aged 15-69 years, with 2-40 years cycling experience across four continents. With two exceptions among men, the findings were the same as those originally reported: children showed interest and curiosity, young girls showed little interest, while adult women showed a kindly, concerned, praising response. By contrast, boys showed physic

Is bipolar disorder specifically associated with aggression?

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have suggested that bipolar disorder (BP) in adults is associated with aggressive behaviors. However, most studies have included only inpatients and have not taken into consideration possible confounding factors. The goal of the present study was to compare the prevalence of aggression in subjects with BP compared to subjects with other, non-BP psychopathology and healthy controls. METHODS: Subjects with bipolar I disorder (BP-I) and bipolar II disorder (BP-II) (n = 255), non-BP psychopathology (n = 85), and healthy controls (n = 84) were recruited. Aggression was m

'Hotspots' for aggression in licensed drinking venues.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: In order to better understand the social context of barroom aggression, the aim was to identify common locations ('hotspots') for aggression in bars and examine the association of hotspots with aggression severity and environmental characteristics. DESIGN AND METHODS: Aggression hotspots were identified using narrative descriptions and data recorded on premises' floor plans for 1057 incidents of aggression collected in the Safer Bars evaluation. Hierarchical Linear Modelling was used to identify bar-level and night-level characteristics associated with each hotspot. RE

Amygdalofrontal functional disconnectivity and aggression in schizophrenia.

A significant proportion of patients with schizophrenia demonstrate abnormalities in dorsal prefrontal regions including the dorsolateral prefrontal and dorsal anterior cingulate cortices. However, it is less clear to what extent abnormalities are exhibited in ventral prefrontal and limbic regions, despite their involvement in social cognitive dysfunction and aggression, which represent problem domains for patients with schizophrenia. Previously, we found that reduced white matter integrity in right inferior frontal regions was associated with higher levels of aggression. Here, we used resting

Haloperidol plus promethazine for psychosis-induced aggression.

BACKGROUND: Health services often manage agitated or violent people, and for emergency psychiatric services such behaviour is particularly prevalent (10%). The drugs used in this situation should ensure that the person swiftly and safely regains composure. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether haloperidol plus promethazine is an effective treatment for psychosis induced agitation/aggression. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group's Register (January 2008). SELECTION CRITERIA: We included all randomised clinical trials involving aggressive people with psychosis for which halo

Without thinking: impulsive aggression and criminal responsibility.

In the U.S. the decision to impose criminal responsibility rests on an assumption about the defendant's decision to engage in proscribed conduct. We punish only those who we believe had the capacity to make a choice. In an increasingly violent world, the criminal law and the assumptions upon which it rests are relentlessly tested. A new generation of neuro-imaging technologies offers to provide insights into structural and functional abnormalities in the brain that may limit the autonomy of many dangerous offenders and unravel the fabric of the criminal justice system. How will the results of

Aggression in individuals newly diagnosed with dementia.

Aggression is often associated with dementia. In this study, aggression in veterans newly diagnosed with dementia was examined and characterized. Participants were >or=60 years diagnosed with dementia at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston, Texas, from 2001 to 2004. Aggression was defined as a positive caregiver response to 1 or more of 3 probes from the Ryden Aggression Scale, administered during a telephone screen. Of 1276 contacts, 385 (30%) were eligible and agreed to participate; at initial screening, 75 (19.5%) were aggressive (23 [31%] verbally, 9 [12%] phy

Behavioral assessment of child-directed canine aggression.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize behavioral circumstances of bites to children by dogs presented to a veterinary behavior clinic. METHODS: Retrospective case series examining medical records of dogs presenting by referral to a university veterinary hospital for aggression and which had bitten a child <18 years old. Behavioral data included age of victim, familiarity with dog, and circumstances of bites. RESULTS: Records of bites to 111 children were examined. Children <6 years old were most commonly bitten in association with resource guarding (44%), whereas older children were most commonly bitte

Trait aggression and hostility in recovered alcoholics.

There is a long-recognized association between alcohol consumption and aggressive behavior. This study was designed to examine aggression in a group of socially well-adapted recovered alcoholics (RA). The question addressed was whether the treatment, together with long-term abstinence from alcohol, could reduce aggression and hostility in RA. A group of male RA (n = 64), who did not meet the DSM-IV criteria for any psychiatric or personality disorder, were recruited to the study from aftercare groups. According to data from their group therapists, they were reliably abstinent for at least 3 ye

Staphylococcal cutaneous infections: invasion, evasion and aggression.

Staphylococcal infections cause a variety of cutaneous and systemic infections, including impetigo, furuncle, subcutaneous abscess, staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS), toxic shock syndrome (TSS) and neonatal toxic shock syndrome-like exanthematous disease (NTED), in association with microbial virulence factors. The virulence factors produced by Staphylococcus aureus have a wide array of biological properties, including disruption of the epithelial barrier, inhibition of opsonization by antibody and complement, interference with neutrophil chemotaxis, cytolysis of neutrophils, and inac

Patterns of adaptation and directions of aggression.

A group of 85 nonclinical women volunteers were given the Serial Color-Word Test and the Personality Deviance Scale to verify whether different patterns of adaptation to the Stroop task correspond to significant differences in directing aggression. It was predicted that subjects with the Dissociative pattern, i.e., high values of nonlinear changes in reading times, would score lower on Intropunitiveness than subjects with the Cumulative pattern, i.e., high values of linear changes in reading times. The hypothesis was confirmed (p = .005). No other significant intergroup difference was found, a

Aggression and sexual offense in Asperger's syndrome.

Asperger's Syndrome is one of the diagnostic subcategories of pervasive developmental disorders. It is characterized by a defect in reciprocal social interaction, lack of empathy for others and poor non-verbal communication. Antisocial acts, including aggression and sexual offense, are not considered to be common in this disorder. We describe an adolescent with Asperger's Syndrome whose main problems are his violence and sexual offenses. We assume that these symptoms are secondary to his diagnosis of Asperger's as a manifestation of his difficulties with the "theory of mind" of others. This at

Adolescent sexual aggression: risk and protective factors.

OBJECTIVE: Little research addresses the correlates of sexual aggression in nonclinical populations of adolescents. The purpose of this study was to identify risk and protective factors associated with sexual violence among male and female adolescents. METHODS: We analyzed data on 71,594 students in the 9th and 12th grades responding to the 1992 Minnesota Student Survey, an anonymous, self-report survey examining an array of risk environments, health-compromising behaviors, and protective factors. The responses of students reporting a history of forcing someone into a sexual act were compared

[Anxiety, aggression, agitation and depression: psychopathologic aspects].

While clinical experience has long since shown that there are different types of depression, in particular anxious and hostile depressions, the psychopathological analysis of the various forms remains of current interest. At least four psychopathological models are currently available. The first raises the question of the continuity between reactions to separation, particularly studied in children, and the clinical expression of certain forms of depression in adults. In many aspects, the latter suggest the sequence: protest-despair-detachment. The second model raises the question of the relati

Relationship between psychiatric diagnosis and patient aggression.

Patient aggression is a common problem on psychiatric units. Recent research has focused on the relationship between aggressive behavior and various patient characteristics, including psychopathology. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between diagnostic groups and particular types of patient aggression in a state psychiatric hospital. A secondary analysis was performed on existing data. There was no significant difference noted among DSM III diagnoses in total patient aggression. However, there was a significant difference between individuals with organic disorders and
