Whole genome sequence data on Ethiopian key sorghum landraces and founder lines.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) is the fifth most important cereal globally. Its genetic diversity is key to improving yield stability, stress tolerance, and adaptation to different environments. Ethiopia is one of the centers for the crop's origin, diversity, and use in both human food and livestock feed. However, genomic data on Ethiopian sorghum remain limited, especially for landraces preferred by local farmers. This dataset consists of whole-genome sequencing data for 188 Ethiopian sorghum accessions, including founder lines and important landraces from major agroecological zones. S

Impact of production systems and feeding strategies on milk, meat and egg production: Nutritional status, food safety and preservative aspects.

Milk, meat, and eggs are essential components of human diets, providing high-quality nutrients such as protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds. The nutritional quality, safety, and shelf life of these animal-derived foods are strongly influenced by livestock production systems and feeding strategies. This chapter examines how different production models, including extensive grazing and intensive feeding systems, and emerging sustainable approaches such as agroecological, regenerative, and circular agriculture shape the nutrient composition, quality and safet

Soil Carbon Dioxide Emissions and Carbon Sequestration with Implementation of Alley Cropping in a Mediterranean Citrus Orchard.

Agroecological ecosystems produce significant carbon dioxide fluxes; however, the equilibrium of their carbon sequestration, as well as emission rates, faces considerable uncertainties. Therefore, sustainable cropping practices represent a unique opportunity for carbon sequestration, compensating greenhouse gas emissions. In this research, we evaluated the short-term effect of different management practices in alleys (tillage, no tillage, alley cropping with Rosmarinus officinalis and Thymus hyemalis on soil properties, carbon sequestration, and CO2 emissions in a grapefruit orchard under semi

Seroepidemiology of Brucella abortus infection in bovids in Sri Lanka.

From 1992 to 1995, 0.15% (n=3916) of the bovids (cattle and buffalo) in Sri Lanka were sampled, using a multi-stage sampling procedure. Serum antibodies for Brucella abortus were detected using the indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The age, the agroecological zone and the management system practiced in the farms of the sampled bovids were studied as risk factors for seropositivity. The overall seroprevalence of brucellosis in cattle was 4.7% (n=3076) and 4.2% in buffaloes (n=840). Bovids that were over 3 years of age, from the dry zone (annual rainfall 20-35 in.), and reared

Agronomic management enhances nutritional quality and functional food potential of purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.): a review.

The growing global challenges of food insecurity posed by climate change, and micronutrient deficiencies have intensified interest in climate resilient, nutrient-dense functional foods. Purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) is a promising candidate owing to its exceptional nutritional profile and adaptability to harsh agroecological conditions. This review provides a comprehensive and critical synthesis of existing literature on the agronomic management, nutritional composition, and functional food potential of purslane, with particular emphasis on its omega-3 fatty acid content and the role of nit

Determination of Enteric Parasites and Biosecurity Measures in Household Family Farming Systems in the Northwestern Nariño Region, Colombia.

Fresh vegetables cultivated in small-scale household systems may facilitate the transmission of foodborne parasitic structures due to environmental exposure and inconsistent hygienic conditions. This study identified the presence, prevalence, and distribution of enteric parasitic structures in vegetables and soils from family farming systems undergoing an agroecological transition process in the Colón-Génova subregion, Colombia, and characterized the biosecurity measures employed by producers. Standard parasitological methods were used to analyze vegetable samples (n = 216) from six horticultu

Forage Carbohydrate Profiles and Endocrine Morphometric Interactions in Traditionally Managed Horses from Romania.

Horses maintained under traditional management systems and dependent on natural forages are often exposed to seasonal and compositional variations that can affect metabolic homeostasis. This study examined associations between forage nutrient composition and metabolic-morphometric indicators in horses from four agroecologically distinct regions of northwestern Romania. Eighty-eight horses managed under semi-extensive rural conditions underwent clinical examination, body condition scoring (BCS), cresty neck scoring (CNS), and fasting blood sampling. Forage samples (n = 34) from daily rations we

Exploring how milk production, body weight and body condition dynamics affect reproductive success after artificial insemination in dairy goats.

In the context of agroecological transition, breeding females with robust reproductive performance, leading to prolonged lactation sequences, is valuable for farmers. This study aimed to explore the relationship between artificial insemination (AI) success and phenotypic lactation curves that serve as proxies for key biological functions in Alpine and Saanen goats. Using data from two French experimental farms (1996-2021), the study analyzed time series data on milk yield (MY), body weight (BW), and sternal body condition score (BCS_S). These data were modeled at the lactation scale to charact

Molecular detection of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in rock pigeons (Columba livia) in Punjab, Pakistan.

Rock pigeons are synanthropic birds and live in close association within human settlements. Synanthropic birds are considered potential carriers of diseases and pose a subsequent risk of their transmission to humans. Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii are intracellular protozoans infecting a wide range of hosts, as well as birds. Data related to the incidence of these protozoans in rock pigeons in Pakistan are scant. The aims of the study were to detect T. gondii and N. caninum DNA in tissue samples from rock pigeons (Columba livia) and to identify possible risk factors associated with inf

Amylose content in rice: integrating genetics, grain filling physiology, and breeding strategies.

Rice is a major staple crop worldwide, and variation in starch composition is a key determinant of grain quality, end-use functionality, and breeding value. Among starch components, amylose content (AC) plays a central role in defining the physicochemical properties of rice grains and reflects the coordinated regulation of starch biosynthesis during endosperm development. This review provides an integrated analysis of amylose variation in rice from a genetics-physiology-breeding perspective, based on a structured literature search using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar coveri

A decade of fall armyworm invasion in Africa (2016 to 2026): lessons learned, progress in management, and pathways for sustainable control.

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a highly destructive pest native to the Americas that was first detected in Africa in 2016. Nearly a decade later, it continues to pose a significant threat to maize production, a staple crop for millions across the continent. The pest rapidly spread, colonizing most maize-growing regions within 2yr and causing estimated annual yield losses of up to 20 million metric tons, adversely affecting food security, rural livelihoods, and economies. Farmers who rely heavily on pesticides risk the emergence of resis

Camel Proteins and Enzymes: A Growing Resource for Functional Evolution and Environmental Adaptation.

In less agroecological parts of the Asian, Arabian, and African deserts, Camelus dromedarius play an important role in human survival. For many years, camels have been employed as a source of food, a tool of transportation, and a means of defense. They are becoming increasingly important as viable livestock animals in many desert climates. With the help of camel genetics, genomics and proteomics known so far, this review article will summarize camel enzymes and proteins, which allow them to thrive under varied harsh environmental situations. An in-depth study of the dromedary genome revealed t

Combining Ability and Heterosis for Endosperm Carotenoids and Agronomic Traits in Tropical Maize Lines.

Provitamin A enrichment of staple crops through biofortification breeding is a powerful approach to mitigate the public health problem of vitamin A deficiency in developing countries. Twenty-four genetically diverse yellow and orange endosperm maize inbred lines with differing levels of provitamin A content were used for the analysis of their combining ability. Each inbred line was developed from crosses and backcrosses between temperate and tropical germplasm. The inbred lines were grouped into different sets according to their provitamin A levels and were then intercrossed in a factorial mat

Ethnogeographic Distribution of Nigerian Fermented Foods and the Prospects for Bioeconomy Improvements.

Fermented foods and beverages represent a cornerstone of Nigerian food culture, yet their scientific documentation remains fragmented, and their potential within global bioeconomy frameworks is largely unrealised. This review addresses two interrelated gaps: the absence of a comprehensive ethnogeographic analysis of Nigerian fermented foods that integrates ecological, cultural, and agricultural drivers of regional diversity, and the limited examination of these foods as models for circular bioeconomy development. Using a narrative synthesis of peer-reviewed literature spanning 1986-2025, we sy
