Linear predictive model of viral load from air samples in simulated conditions.

Airborne viruses persist and propagate in indoor settings, increasing the likelihood of outbreaks and pandemics such as the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic. Robust air sampling methods capable of detecting, identifying, and quantifying airborne viral particles can provide critical information for mitigating these risks. However, there is still no scientific consensus on standardized protocols for recovering airborne viruses indoors. This study aimed to formulate and validate a standardized protocol for air sampling and analysis tailored to accurately detect and quantify viral aerosols in controlled indoor

Effects of Air Pollution and Meteorological Conditions on DED: Associated Manifestations and Underlying Mechanisms.

This study aims to explore the associations and the underlying mechanism among dry eye disease (DED), air pollution, and meteorological conditions. DED is positively correlated with air pollutants (i.e., PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, CO, and SO2) and meteorological conditions (i.e., high altitude and wind speed), while negatively associated with relative humidity. Both low and high air temperatures effect DED. Atmospheric pollutants affect DED mainly through necroptosis or autophagy, inflammatory responses, and oxidative stress. Meteorological factors affect DED not only by their own affects but also

Modeling impacts of traffic, air pollution, and weather conditions on cardiopulmonary disease mortality.

AIMS: Cardiopulmonary disease (CPD) is a leading cause of death worldwide. Increasing evidence shows that air pollution and exposure to weather conditions have important contributory roles. Understanding the interaction of these factors is difficult due to the complexity of the relationship between CPD, air pollution, and environmental factors. METHODS: This paper uses regression models and machine learning approaches to explore these relationships, and investigate whether meteorological factors and air pollution have a synergistic effect on CPD. We use daily data from 2009-2018 from four cit

Air Pollution and Cardiovascular and Thromboembolic Events in Older Adults With High-Risk Conditions.

Little epidemiologic research has focused on pollution-related risks in medically vulnerable or marginalized groups. Using a nationwide 50% random sample of 2008-2016 Medicare Part D-eligible fee-for-service participants in the United States, we identified a cohort with high-risk conditions for cardiovascular and thromboembolic events (CTEs) and linked individuals with seasonal average zip-code-level concentrations of fine particulate matter (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5)). We assessed the relationship between seasonal PM2.5 exposure and hospitalization for e

A numerical simulation of air flow in the human respiratory system for various environmental conditions.

The functions of the nasal cavity are very important for maintaining the internal environment of the lungs since the inner walls of the nasal cavity control the temperature and saturation of the inhaled air with water vapor until the nasopharynx is reached. In this paper, three-dimensional computational studies of airflow transport in the models of the nasal cavity were carried out for the usual inspiratory velocity in various environmental conditions. Three-dimensional numerical results are compared with experimental data and calculations of other authors. Numerical results show that during n

Air pollution and meteorological conditions during gestation and type 1 diabetes in offspring.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence indicates that air pollution is capable of disrupting the immune system and therefore, might be associated with an onset of Type 1 diabetes (T1D). OBJECTIVES: We explored possible links of T1D with ambient exposures in the population of southern Israel, characterized by hot and dry climate and frequent dust storms. METHODS: We conducted a matched nested case-control study where exposure to environmental pollutants during gestation in T1D cases was compared to that of healthy children. Up to 10 controls were matched to every case by age, gender and ethnicity, in a

Alpha-adrenoreceptor blockade with phenoxybenzamine does not affect the ability of the nose to condition air.

The primary function of the nose is to warm and humidify air. We have previously shown that raising nasal mucosal temperature by immersing feet in warm water increases the amount of water evaporated by the nose as air passes through it (nasal conditioning capacity; Abbott D, Baroody F, Naureckas E, and Naclerio R. Am J Rhinol 15: 41-45, 2001). To investigate further the effect of nasal mucosal temperature on nasal conditioning capacity, we raised the temperature through alpha-adrenoreceptor blockade by intranasally administering phenoxybenzamine. We hypothesized that blocking alpha-adrenorecep

Airborne microbial contaminants in indoor environments. Naturally ventilated and air-conditioned homes.

The atmospheric burden of viable particulates in the interiors of condominium homes with central air conditioning was compared with that of the typically more open-type of naturally ventilated Hawaiian homes. Andersen microbial air samplers were used to enumerate the numbers and kinds of respirable fungi and bacteria inside the residences. The results were compared with that obtained outside the homes to evaluate the impact of the air conditioning systems on indoor air quality. There were no significant differences in microbial air contaminants between the outdoors and the air inside naturally

Study on infection risk in a negative pressure ward under different fresh airflow patterns based on a radiation air conditioning system.

COVID-19 and other respiratory infectious viruses are highly contagious, and patients need to be treated in negative pressure wards. At present, many negative pressure wards use independent air conditioning equipment, but independent air conditioning equipment has problems such as indoor air circulation flow, condensate water accumulation, and improper filter maintenance, which increase the risk of infection for healthcare workers and patients. The radiation air conditioning system relies on the radiation ceiling to control the indoor temperature and uses new air to control the indoor humidity

Influence of mobile air-conditioning on vehicle emissions and fuel consumption: a model approach for modern gasoline cars used in Europe.

The influence of air-conditioning activity on the emissions and fuel consumption of passenger cars is an important issue, since fleet penetration and use of these systems have reached a high level. Apart from the MOBILE6 study in the United States, little data is available on the impact of air-conditioning devices (A/Cs). Since weather conditions and A/C technologies both differ from those in the U. S., a test series was designed for the European setting. A fleet of six modern gasoline passenger cars was tested in different weather conditions. Separate test series were carried out for the init

[Questionnaire survey of air extruded jelly dosage form (I) - oral condition of elder patients and applicability of air extruded jelly formulation - ].

Elderly patients tend to have troubles with oral conditions such as the impairment of deglutition capability (difficulty in swallowing), in addition to a decline in physical performance. An air extruded jelly formulation (AEJF) has been developed as a new formulation consisting of jelly and clean air under increased pressure. As jelly is discharged smoothly by pushing the air portion, elderly patients are able to easily take jelly from the package. In this study, survey questionnaires after a patient's trial of AEJF were conducted to characterize the intra-oral condition and reveal the applica

The Impact of Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning Design Features on the Transmission of Viruses, Including SARS-CoV-2: Overview of Reviews.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2 outbreak was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020. Almost 2 years later (early February 2022), the World Health Organization reported over 383 million cases of the disease caused by the virus, with over 5.6 million deaths worldwide. Debate regarding the routes of transmission was substantial early in the pandemic; however, airborne transmission emerged as an important consideration. Infectious airborne agents can spread within the built environment through heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. Multiple fe

Evaluating heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems toward minimizing the airborne transmission risk of Mucormycosis and COVID-19 infections in built environment.

This ongoing global pandemic of the COVID-19 has generated a significant international concern for our respiratory health. For instance, the breakout of the COVID-19 pandemic was directly linked to the spread of infectious particles in indoor environments between humans, underlining the significance of rigorous and effective actions to limit the transmission of diseases. Recently, Mucormycosis infections in COVID-19 patients have been identified. This investigation aims to investigate potential infection control HVAC solutions for indoor environments, as well as their core mechanisms for reduc

Numerical Modeling of the Effects of Nasal Mucosal Thickness and Dehydration on Air Conditioning for a 5-Year-Old with Cystic Fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: The nasal cavity warms and humidifies inspired air to protect the lower respiratory tract. In cystic fibrosis (CF), thickened and dehydrated mucus alters airway surface liquid and may impair these conditioning functions, but the magnitude of these effects remains unknown. OBJECTIVES: To quantify how mucosal layer thickness and surface dehydration influence intranasal temperature and humidity distributions in a 5-year-old child with CF. METHODS: A subject-specific nose-to-oropharynx model was generated from MRI data and simulated using large-eddy simulation with coupled heat and w
