Evaluating Air Force Personnel with Higher Body Mass Indexes by Monitoring Ambulatory Blood Pressure.

INTRODUCTION: It is possible that a single clinical blood pressure (BP) reading, as currently practiced in the Indian Air Force, may not be able to establish hypertensive status. This study examined whether at higher body mass indexes (BMI), 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) would be a better tool for detecting latent hypertension vis-à-vis clinical BP recording. METHODS: In this study, 230 healthy, male, clinically normotensive (BP <140/90 mm of Hg) subjects between 20-40 yr of age were included: 50 with normal BMI (<25 kg · m-2), 120 overweight (BMI 25-29.99 kg · m-2), and 60

Standardized Metrics for Polydimethylsiloxane Bonding: Rupture Pressure-Stress Correlation in Air Plasma-Activated Interfaces.

Reliable and robust bonding of PDMS interfaces is essential for performing microfluidic and flexible electronic devices, where surface activation governs interfacial bonding. This study introduces a geometry-correlated scaling function that converts rupture pressure into maximum von Mises stress at the bonding interface, a threshold as a material property for a given interface, enabling a standardized cross-platform evaluation of bonding strength. Using this material threshold-based framework, we assess the efficacy of air plasma treatment through hydrophilicity measurements, adhesion testing,

Effect of continuous positive air pressure on cognitive impairment associated with obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a kind of sleep-related breathing disorder, involving multiple organs and systems, which can lead to cognitive impairment. At present, the pathophysiological mechanism of cognitive impairment related to OSA is not clear. It is still unknown whether continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) has therapeutic effect on cognitive impairment in patients with OSA. These patients repeatedly experience intermittent hypoxia and have sleep fragmentation, which results in abnormal brain structure and function, characterizing by extensive cognitive impairment. Appropriate

Alternative reactive support surfaces (non-foam and non-air-filled) for preventing pressure ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers (also known as injuries, pressure sores, decubitus ulcers and bed sores) are localised injuries to the skin or underlying soft tissue, or both, caused by unrelieved pressure, shear or friction. Reactive surfaces that are not made of foam or air cells can be used for preventing pressure ulcers. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of non-foam and non-air-filled reactive beds, mattresses or overlays compared with any other support surface on the incidence of pressure ulcers in any population in any setting. SEARCH METHODS: In November 2019, we searched the Cochrane Wou

Personal exposure to fine particulate air pollutants impacts blood pressure and heart rate variability.

Air pollution has increasingly been recognized as a major healthcare concern. Air pollution, particularly fine particulate matter (≤ 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter [PM2.5]) has demonstrated an increase in adverse cardiovascular events. This study aimed to assess the cardiovascular response to personal exposure to different levels of PM2.5. This prospective cohort study enrolled healthy volunteers aged ≥ 18 years with no cardiovascular disease. Study subjects carried personal exposure monitor of PM2.5, digital thermo-hygrometer for temperature and humidity, 24-h blood pressure monitor, and cont

A novel intermittent negative air pressure device ameliorates obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in adults.

PURPOSE: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) have difficulties in compliance with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and the treatment outcome is heterogeneous. We proposed a proof-of-concept study of a novel intermittent negative air pressure (iNAP®) device for physicians to apply on patients who have failed or refused to use CPAP. METHODS: The iNAP® device retains the tongue and the soft palate in a forward position to decrease airway obstruction. A full nightly usage with the device was evaluated with polysomnography. Subgrouping by baseline apnea-hypopnea index (

Suture Technique to Prevent Air Leakage during Negative-Pressure Wound Therapy in Fournier Gangrene.

BACKGROUND: The use of negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) for Fournier gangrene management is well documented; however, it is difficult to fixate GranuFoam dressings and maintain an airtight seal over the perineum area. We developed a simple method to facilitate GranuFoam fixation and improve airtight sealing. METHODS: The Fournier's gangrene severity index (FGSI) score less than 9 was collected in from January 2015 to October 2016. All 13 patients underwent fasciotomy, and NPWT was applied directly on fasciotomy wounds after the debridement of infected tissue. Partial wound closure was p

Ear and vestibular symptoms in train operators after sudden air pressure changes in trains.

A healthy 31-year-old train operator presented to our occupational health clinic reporting ear aches, headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness and even slight tinnitus. These symptoms first appeared when the patient started operating from a new train cabin. He described a sudden pressure gradient, experienced on some parts of the trajectory, which might have caused these problems. Although the cabins were equipped with a pressure equalising device, this was usually switched off because of the device creating an uncomfortable feeling in the cabin. The literature describes sudden pressure gradients as

Association between long-term air pollution and increased blood pressure and hypertension in China.

Several studies have investigated the short-term effects of ambient air pollutants in the development of high blood pressure and hypertension. However, little information exists regarding the health effects of long-term exposure. To investigate the association between residential long-term exposure to air pollution and blood pressure and hypertension, we studied 24 845 Chinese adults in 11 districts of 3 northeastern cities from 2009 to 2010. Three-year average concentration of particles with an aerodynamic diameter ≤10 µm (PM(10)), sulfur dioxide (SO(2)), nitrogen dioxides (NO(2)), and ozone

Effect of cleaning methods after reduced-pressure air abrasion on bonding to zirconia ceramic.

PURPOSE: To evaluate in vitro the influence of different cleaning methods after low-pressure air abrasion on the bond strength of a phosphate monomer-containing luting resin to zirconia ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 112 zirconia ceramic disks were divided into 7 groups (n = 16). In the test groups, disks were air abraded at low pressure (L) 0.05 MPa using 50-μm alumina particles. Prior to bonding, the disks were ultrasonically (U) cleaned either in isopropanol alcohol (AC), hydrofluoric acid (HF), demineralized water (DW), or tap water (TW), or they were used without ultrasonic c

Instability and Flame-Pressure Coupling in Downward Propagating Premixed H2/CO/CO2/Air Flames.

This study investigates the instability and flame-pressure coupling characteristics of downward propagating premixed H2/CO/CO2/air flames under varying hydrogen volume fractions (HVF). Particular attention was paid to flame morphology evolution, overpressure development, thermoacoustic characteristics, and reaction sensitivity. The results show that increasing HVF markedly modifies flame dynamics. Smooth and laminar-dominated flame fronts are observed at low HVF (5%-10%), whereas pronounced wrinkling, finger-like structures, and cellular instabilities emerge when HVF ≥ 15%, indicating a transi

Atomically Suspended Graphene/MoS2 Heterojunction Driven High-Resolution Air Pressure Sensor for Fall Detection.

Air pressure sensors are widely used in aerospace, the military, and healthcare. The core metrics (sensitivity and resolution) of sensors are being driven to increasingly higher standards by expanding application demands such as in wearable devices. Reducing the device size while maintaining or even improving sensor performance remains one of the key challenges in the field. We present a high-sensitivity, high-resolution air pressure sensor based on an atomically suspended graphene/MoS2 heterojunction. After structural optimization, the air pressure sensor achieves a sensitivity of 0.152 kPa-1

Sterilization characteristics of narrow tubing by nitrogen oxides generated in atmospheric pressure air plasma.

The sterilization characteristics of active species generated by an atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge plasma using air and oxygen at the inner surface of silicone tubing were investigated. A dielectric barrier discharge torch plasma device was installed at one end of the tube and generated long-lived active species that flowed into the tube. A strip-type biological indicator with a 105-cell bacterial spore was placed at the opposite end of the 60 cm tube. Sterilization was completed within 30 min by active particles generated from the air plasma. The main factors contributing to the ste
