The fate of atmospherically deposited and environmentally active Hg is uncertain in the Arctic, and of greatest toxicological concern is the transformation to monometh-ylmercury (MMHg). Lake/watershed mass balances were developed to examine MMHg cycling in four northern Alaska lakes near the ecological research station at Toolik Lake (68 degrees 38' N, 149 degrees 36' W). Primary features of the cycle are watershed runoff, sedimentary production and mobilization, burial, and photodecomposition in the water column. The principal source of MMHg is in situ benthic production with 80-91% of total

Free ranging reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) are driven into corral systems and handled each summer on the Seward Peninsula (Alaska, USA). During June and July of 1995-96 reindeer calves were inspected for injury, handled, weighed, and randomly treated with long-acting oxytetracycline. Calves that returned to subsequent handlings within the same year, received treatment only if they had been treated during their first handling. The effects of prophylactic antibiotic treatment and other factors, including weight, handling related injury, and sex on post-handling survival in reindeer calve

BACKGROUND: Alaska Native (AN) youth and their communities experience many health inequities, including increased rates of substance use. AN youth have earlier initiation and heavier use of substances compared to other youth, with over half of AN youth having engaged in use by 13. While prior research has examined risk factors, few studies have evaluated how social network structures may protect against substance use in youth. This study used social network analysis to examine associations between peer ties, connections with school staff, cultural connectedness, victimization, and substance us

Wastewater surveillance (WS) is underused in rural communities. We evaluated WS performance in the remote, subarctic, mostly Indigenous, community of Bethel, Alaska, USA, during October 2022-May 2024. Wastewater was collected >3 times weekly and underwent on-site PCR testing for SARS-CoV-2, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and influenza A and B viruses. We compared WS virus detection with local clinical data by using results from 318 wastewater samples and 7,392 clinical tests. We detected SARS-CoV-2 in 265 (83.3%) wastewater samples, influenza A virus in 128 (40.3%), RSV in 78 (24.5%), and

American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) land rights, sovereignty conflicts, and health outcomes have been significantly influenced by settler colonialism. This principle has driven the numerous relocations and forced assimilation of AI/AN children as well as the claiming of AI/AN lands across the United States. As tribes across the country begin to reclaim these lands and others continue to struggle for sovereignty, it is imperative to recognize that land rights are a determinant of health in AI/AN children. Aside from the demonstrated biological risks of environmental health injustices incl

In 1993, an epizootic of adenovirus hemorrhagic disease (AHD) caused the death of at least 1,000 mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) in California, US. Since then, numerous cervid species throughout the US have had deaths confirmed to be caused by AHD. In 2015, the death of two captive moose (Alces americanus gigas) calves marked the first recognized AHD-caused deaths in Alaska, a state in which moose are important economically as well as for food security and cultural identity. Both cases were characterized by systemic vasculitis with endothelial cell intranuclear inclusion bodies, pulmonary edem

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. Coast Guard and Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration have identified the Alaskan offshore seafood processing industry as high-risk. This study used Coast Guard injury reports to describe patterns of traumatic injury among offshore seafood processors, as well as identify modifiable hazards.
METHODS: From the reports, we manually reviewed and abstracted information on the incident circumstances, injury characteristics and circumstances, and vessel. Traumatic injury cases were coded using the Occupational Injury and Illness Classification System, and a Wor

To examine rates of ectopic pregnancy (EP) among American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) women aged 15-44 years seeking care at Indian Health Service (IHS), Tribal, and urban Indian health facilities during 2002-2009. We used 2002-2009 inpatient and outpatient data from the IHS National Patient Information Reporting System to identify EP-associated visits and obtain the number of pregnancies among AI/AN women. Repeat visits for the same EP were determined by calculating the interval between visits; if more than 90 days between visits, the visit was considered related to a new EP. We identifi

IMPORTANCE: More thorough evaluation of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and motor neuron disease in unique populations could provide clues to etiologies for these idiopathic conditions, and educational programs for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people and health care professionals on reservations could improve awareness, understanding, diagnosis, and treatment. In the ongoing search for susceptibility genes, studying particular racial groups, such as AI/ANs,might facilitate the identification of new mutations.
OBJECTIVE: To provide better understanding of ALS and secondarily o

We report on the presence of specific antibodies to Brucella spp. and Yersinia enterocolitica in polar bears (Ursus maritimus) from northern Alaska (southern Beaufort Sea) during 2003-2006. Based on numerous known stressors (e.g., climate change and loss of sea ice habitat, contaminants), there is increased concern regarding the status of polar bears. Considering these changes, it is important to assess exposure to potentially pathogenic organisms and to improve understanding of transmission pathways. Brucella or specific antibodies to Brucella spp. has been reported in marine mammals. Various

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is caused by maternal alcohol use during pregnancy and is one of the leading causes of preventable birth defects and developmental disabilities in the United States. FAS is diagnosed on the basis of a combination of growth deficiency (pre- or postnatal), central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction, facial dysmorphology, and maternal alcohol use during pregnancy. Estimates of the prevalence of FAS vary from 0.2 to 1.0 per 1,000 live-born infants. This variation is due, in part, to the small size of the populations studied, varying case definitions, and different survei

We reviewed records of all food-borne outbreaks of botulism in Alaska from 1947 through 1985. Fifty-nine confirmed or suspected outbreaks with 156 cases were reported. All outbreaks occurred in Alaska Natives and were associated with eating traditional Alaska Native foods. Forty-four (75%) of the outbreaks were laboratory confirmed and involved 133 persons. The overall annual incidence of confirmed or suspected botulism was 8.6 cases per 100,000 population. Seventeen persons died, an overall case-fatality rate of 11%. Type E toxin accounted for 32 (73%) laboratory-confirmed outbreaks; type A,

PurposeAmerican Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) peoples face disproportionate health risks. Understanding how AI/ANs seek out information can inform effective campaigns design that can help address these risks. We investigate preferred communication sources, health information seeking behavior (HISB), self-efficacy, perceived importance of health information, and prevention orientation of American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs).DesignWe administered a survey at 3 cultural events.SettingThe National Tribal Health Conference in Bellevue, the University of Washington Winter and Spring Powwo

OBJECTIVE: This paper examines substance and behavioral addictions among American Indian and Alaska Natives (AIAN) to identify the structural and psychosocial risk and cultural protective factors that are associated with substance use and behavioral addictions.
METHODS: Five databases were used to search for peer reviewed articles through December 2021 that examined substance and behavioral addictions among AIANs.
RESULTS: The literature search identified 69 articles. Numerous risk factors (i.e., life stressors, severe trauma, family history of alcohol use) and protective factors (i.e., ethn

OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors for postpartum hemorrhage in a population of Alaska Native women.
METHODS: A case-control study of 384 women (128 cases, 256 controls) delivering between August 1, 2018, and July 31, 2019, was conducted at a Level III maternal referral center for Alaska Native women in Alaska. Risk factors were assessed via retrospective chart review, and bivariate and conditional regression analyses were conducted to determine odds ratios (ORs) between women with and without postpartum hemorrhage.
RESULTS: Body mass index ≥40 (OR 2.6, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.4-4.5)

Background: Maternal mortality decreased globally by about 38% between 2000 and 2017, yet, it continues to climb in the United States. Gaping disparities exist in U.S. maternal mortality between white (referent group) and minority women. Despite important and appropriate attention to disparities for black women, almost no attention has been given to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) women. The purpose of this scoping review is to synthesize available literature concerning AI/AN maternal mortality. Methods: Databases were searched using the terms maternal mortality and pregnancy-related dea
