Engagement in alcohol-free activities, community-level economic disadvantage, and heavy drinking following alcohol treatment.

The reinforcer pathology model proposed by Warren Bickel and colleagues focuses on within-individual motivational processes involving overvaluation of smaller immediate rewards relative to larger delayed rewards (delay discounting) and high drug reinforcing value (drug demand) as determinants of unhealthy substance use. We propose an extension of this model to incorporate broader socioecological factors (e.g., community-level economic environment) that may influence reward preference. Using a secondary data analysis of 1,726 individuals enrolled in a randomized clinical trial for alcohol use d

Global prevalence of alcohol use and binge drinking during pregnancy, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Alcohol use during pregnancy is an established cause of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), with heavy drinking during pregnancy being explicitly linked to fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). This paper presents recent estimates of the prevalence of: (i) any amount of alcohol use during pregnancy; (ii) one or more binge drinking episode(s) (4 or more standard drinks on a single occasion) during pregnancy; (iii) FAS; and (iv) FASD among the general population globally and by World Health Organization region. It is apparent, based on the presented estimates, that alcohol use and binge drinking occ

Involvement of arginine vasopressin and V1b receptor in alcohol drinking in Sardinian alcohol-preferring rats.

BACKGROUND: Recent animal studies have shown that the level of stress-responsive arginine vasopressin (AVP) gene expression in the amygdala is increased during early withdrawal from long-term heroin or cocaine administration. The selective AVP V1b receptor antagonist SSR149415 (capable of exerting antidepressant-like and anxiolytic effects in animal models) also blocked stress-induced reinstatement of drug-seeking behavior. This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of alcohol and to determine whether (i) there are genetically determined differences in basal AVP mRNA levels in the me

Adult transition from at-risk drinking to alcohol dependence: the relationship of family history and drinking motives.

BACKGROUND: Prospective studies have not previously examined whether a family history of alcoholism and drinking motives conjointly predict a diagnosed DSM-IV alcohol abuse or dependence in adults, despite a large literature that each is associated with alcohol consumption. The focus of this study is the conjoint, prospective examination of these risk factors in a 10-year longitudinal study of adults who were at-risk drinkers at baseline. METHODS: Prospective, population-based cohort of drinkers aged 18 or older from a Northeastern U.S. area initially evaluated for history of alcohol use diso

Binge Drinking and Crime: Accounting for Alcohol Availability in Neighborhoods.

Background: The relationship between alcohol availability and crime is relatively well established. On the other hand, alcohol availability in neighborhoods may result in excessive alcohol use that is associated with crime, and we know less about the role that binge drinking has in crime. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines binge drinking as "consuming 5 or more drinks on an occasion for men or 4 or more drinks on an occasion for women." Methods: In this study, we gathered Milwaukee, Wisconsin 2021 data on binge drinking from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a

Commentary: remaining questions on moderate alcohol drinking and cancer risk.

In January 2025, the United States Surgeon General issued an advisory describing the scientific evidence for the causal link between alcohol consumption and increased cancer risk. The report is timely as the link between alcohol and cancer is well established. Few would dispute the generally adverse effects of alcohol consumption on cancer risk and overall health with excessive levels of intake. More controversy exists at light-to-moderate levels of intake, such as not exceeding 2 drinks per day for men or 1 drink per day for women. Cancer risk may be the biggest concern in the low-moderate ra

Alcohol drinking leads to sex-dependent differentiation of T cells.

OBJECTIVE: Global per capita alcohol consumption is increasing, posing significant socioeconomic and medical challenges also due to alcohol-related traumatic injuries but also its biological effects. Trauma as a leading cause of death in young adults, is often associated with an increased risk of complications, such as sepsis and multiple organ failure, due to immunological imbalances. Regulatory T cells play a crucial role in maintaining immune homeostasis by regulating the inflammatory response. Since it is crucial to understand the effects of alcohol in healthy volunteers, in order to refer

Alcohol drinking, smoking, and cutaneous melanoma risk: Mendelian randomization analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the causal relationship between poor lifestyle habits, such as smoking and drinking, and cutaneous malignant melanoma. METHOD: In the present study, alcohol consumption and smoking were used as exposure factors, and single nucleotide polymorphisms closely associated with alcohol consumption and smoking were used as instrumental variables, while cutaneous melanoma was set as an outcome variable. Two-sample Mendelian randomization analyses were run between alcohol consumption and melanoma and smoking and melanoma to investigate their causal associations, respectively.

Korean Alcohol Guidelines for Moderate Drinking Based on Facial Flushing.

This study investigated advantages and potential risks associated with drinking alcohol in Koreans based on the alcohol flush reaction. Our investigation reviewed published studies and examined moderate-drinking levels for Koreans based on modified National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism guidelines. Fourteen articles out of a total 198 publications were searched using PubMed, EMBASE, KoreaMed, and RISS (Research Information Sharing Service) databases and selected for review. Individuals without alcohol flush reaction (non-flushers) exhibited lower risks associated with insulin resis

European Code against Cancer 4th Edition: Alcohol drinking and cancer.

Alcohol consumption is the third leading risk factor for disease and mortality in Europe. As evaluated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Monographs, a causal relationship is established for consumption of alcoholic beverages and cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, liver, colorectum and female breast, even at low and moderate alcohol intakes. The higher the amount of alcohol consumed, the higher the risk of developing cancer. In Europe, an estimated 10% (95% CI: 7%-13%) of all cancer cases in men and 3% (95% CI: 1%-5%) of all cancer cases in women ar

Alcohol consumption is the third leading risk factor for disease and mortality in Europe. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Monographs provide strengthened evidence that the consumption of alcoholic beverages is causally associated with cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, liver, colorectum and female breast, even for low and moderate alcohol intakes. The risk of cancer increases in a dose-dependent manner, and the higher the amount of alcohol consumed, the higher the risk of developing cancer. Drinking songs: alcohol effects on learned song of zebra finches.

Speech impairment is one of the most intriguing and least understood effects of alcohol on cognitive function, largely due to the lack of data on alcohol effects on vocalizations in the context of an appropriate experimental model organism. Zebra finches, a representative songbird and a premier model for understanding the neurobiology of vocal production and learning, learn song in a manner analogous to how humans learn speech. Here we show that when allowed access, finches readily drink alcohol, increase their blood ethanol concentrations (BEC) significantly, and sing a song with altered acou

Typology of alcohol users based on longitudinal patterns of drinking.

OBJECTIVE: Worldwide, alcohol is the most commonly used psychoactive substance. However, heterogeneity among alcohol users has been widely recognized. This paper presents a typology of alcohol users based on an implementation of idiographic methodology to examine longitudinal daily and cyclic (weekly) patterns of alcohol use at the individual level. METHOD: A secondary data analysis was performed on the pre-intervention data from a large randomized control trial. A time series analysis was performed at the individual level, and a dynamic cluster analysis was employed to identify homogenous lo

Alcohol increases impulsivity and abuse liability in heavy drinking women.

Heavy drinking has increased in recent years and has been linked to numerous health-related risks, particularly in women. A number of factors may play a role in exacerbating the risks linked to heavy drinking, such as impulsivity, which itself is related to a number of risky behaviors. The present study investigated the effects of alcohol (0, 0.5, 0.75 g/kg) on impulsivity in female heavy drinkers (n = 23) and female light drinkers (n = 23) using a double-blind, placebo-controlled outpatient design; all women were tested during follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. A meta-analysis on alcohol drinking and gastric cancer risk.

BACKGROUND: Whether an association between alcohol drinking and gastric cancer risk exists is an open question. In order to provide a definite quantification of the association between alcohol drinking and gastric cancer risk, we conducted a meta-analysis of available data. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We carried out a PubMed search of articles published up to June 2010 and identified 44 case-control and 15 cohort studies, including a total of 34 557 gastric cancer cases. We derived meta-analytic estimates using random-effects models, taking into account correlation between estimates. We carried out

Alcohol drinking after liver transplantation is associated with graft injury.

AIM: This was a single-center, mixed-design, cross-sectional and retrospective study to assess the performance of the 4-item, self-reported CAGE (Cut down, Annoyed, Guilty, Eye-opener) questionnaire in predicting histology-proven alcohol-related liver graft injury (ARLGI). METHODS: A total of 316 liver transplant (LT) patients between six months and five years were enrolled. Based on previous research, problem alcohol drinking (PAD) was defined as any score ≥ 1 on the CAGE, while a cut-off of 2 was assumed for alcohol dependence (AD). RESULTS: Responders were 195, 45 (23.1%) had a CAGE score

Reduced risk of endometrial cancer from alcohol drinking in Japanese.

The role of alcohol consumption in the etiology of endometrial cancer has not been clarified. To examine the association between alcohol consumption and endometrial cancer risk, we conducted a case-control study with 148 histologically diagnosed incident endometrial cancer cases and 1468 matched non-cancer controls. Median consumption of alcohol was only 19.3 g/week among cases who drank and 28.2 g/week among controls who drank. These values are lower than in Western countries. Relative risk was analyzed in subjects classified into four groups according to weekly alcohol consumption (non-drink

Alcohol abuse: medical effects of heavy drinking in late life.

As many as 15% of community-dwelling older persons are heavy drinkers, but their alcoholism is often hidden from their physicians. Depression, loneliness, and lack of social support are the most frequently cited antecedents to drinking for older alcoholics. Clinically, the same amount of alcohol once consumed with impunity may cause clinical symptoms in late life. Physiologic changes in volume of distribution make older patients susceptible to acute alcohol toxicity, with its CNS effects and metabolic disturbances. Liver disease, nutritional deficiencies, and impotence are consequences of chro
