The inducibility of two monooxygenase and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (GT) forms was studied in primary cultures of adult rat hepatocytes. Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were determined by gas chromatography in 241 placentas from cotton-growing regions, 121 placentas from an urban area (city of Osh), and 146 placentas from unpolluted mountain regions of Kyrgyzstan. Ethical, economic and technical reasons hinder regular supply of freshly isolated hepatocytes from higher mammals such as monkey for preclinical evaluation of drugs.
