Coping with the death of a child: a study over time.

The usefulness of coping as an explanatory variable in parental adjustment to the death of a child is suggested in a study of 194 parents who responded to a survey shortly after their bereavement and again a year later. The most adaptive coping strategies were active and externally directed, including replacement of the child and altruism; least adaptive were escape and preoccupation with the child. Effects of participation in a self-help group are examined and discussed.

Can you See What We See? African American Parents' Views of the Strengths and Challenges of Children and Youth Living with Adversity.

A premise of positive youth development is that social competencies can develop in adversity and co-exist with problem behaviors. This research tested whether African American youth ages 9-17 who had experienced significant family stressors would form groups that displayed combinations of adversity, problem behavior, and strengths. Parents of a nationally representative sample of African Americans children were interviewed on child difficulties and strengths as part of the CDC's 2019 National Health Interview Survey. About 15% of the national sample of African American youth had experienced vi

Nursing Care as Perceived by Nurses Working in Disability Community Settings in Greece.

INTRODUCTION-AIM: The concept of nursing care in learning disability community settings has not been investigated in Greece. The aim of this paper is to investigate how nurses working in learning disability community settings perceive the meaning of nursing care. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 100 nurses and nursing assistants working in a social care hospice. Participants were asked to answer questions about socio- demographic characteristics of the sample and fill in a questionnaire of care (GR-NDI-24), the "Job-Communication-Satisfaction-Importance" (JCSI) questionnaire and

Uses of Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Perioperative and Other Patients.

The efficacy of using complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is supported by the literature to decrease preoperative anxiety, postoperative pain and opioid requirements, as well as nausea and vomiting and to improve severity of headaches and increase wound healing. Nursing care includes interventions using CAs for treatment of a range of patient needs. Being supportive while educating parents and patients demonstrates altruism, which also is beneficial for improving health outcomes with CAM.

Funeral expense reimbursement as a strategy to enhance organ donation and transplantation access.

We propose amending the National Organ Transplant Act to permit reimbursement of funeral expenses for deceased organ donors, analogous to current practices for whole-body donors. This ethically consistent policy could increase organ donation rates by 9-35%, saving 105,000-419,000 life-years and generating $200-800 million annually in Medicare savings-without commodifying human organs, compromising altruism, or undermining established ethical standards governing organ donation.

Neural and cognitive characteristics of extraordinary altruists.

Altruistic behavior improves the welfare of another individual while reducing the altruist's welfare. Humans' tendency to engage in altruistic behaviors is unevenly distributed across the population, and individual variation in altruistic tendencies may be genetically mediated. Although neural endophenotypes of heightened or extreme antisocial behavior tendencies have been identified in, for example, studies of psychopaths, little is known about the neural mechanisms that support heightened or extreme prosocial or altruistic tendencies. In this study, we used structural and functional magnetic

It's costly punishment, not altruistic: Low midfrontal theta and state anger predict punishment.

Punishment in economic games has been interpreted as "altruistic." However, it was shown that punishment is related to trait anger instead of trait altruism in a third-party dictator game if compensation is also available. Here, we investigated the influence of state anger on punishment and compensation in the third-party dictator game. Therefore, we used movie sequences for emotional priming, including the target states anger, happy, and neutral. We measured the Feedback-Related Negativity (FRN) and midfrontal theta band activation, to investigate an electro-cortical correlate of the processi

Blood donors' helping behavior is driven by warm glow: more evidence for the blood donor benevolence hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: The benevolence hypothesis (both donor and recipient gain) suggests that blood donors, compared to non-blood donors have a general altruistic motivational preference based on warm glow (i.e., "I donate because it makes me feel good"). With objective behavioral economics tests of altruism and warm-glow giving, this paper offers the first direct experimental test of this hypothesis. The prediction that blood donors will be motivated in general by warm glow was compared to predictions from other theoretical models: strong reciprocity and empathy. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Four experi

Employee motivators and barriers of workplace-supported blood donation.

BACKGROUND: Workplace-supported blood donation is a promising yet underexamined strategy for donor recruitment and retention. Aligning blood donation with corporate social responsibility goals may improve employee engagement while reducing logistical barriers. Although blood collection agencies worldwide adopt varied models of workplace support, limited research has examined how workplace contexts shape motivators and barriers to blood donation. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: An online self-report survey (n = 285) was conducted with employees from four large Australian organizations, each with est

Social network structure and HIV infection among injecting drug users in Lithuania: gatekeepers as bridges of infection.

The aim of the study was to assess-while controlling for individual risk characteristics-how certain social network structural characteristics (degree, eigenvector, and betweenness centrality) are related to HIV infections. Injecting drug users (N = 299) in Vilnius, Lithuania were recruited using incentivized chain referral sampling for a cross-sectional study. Sociometric social links were established between participants, and UCINET was used to calculate network measures. HIV prevalence was 10 %, and all except two knew they were infected. Of the five variables that remained significant in t

Environmental Concerns for Children in Humanitarian Crises.

Children in humanitarian settings may be exposed to toxic substances (eg, lead, mercury, fluoride, pesticides, tobacco, and carbon monoxide) through inadequate housing, polluted indoor air and water, or being located near industrial sites. They may become ill after ingesting contaminated food (such as cassava containing cyanide) or being sprayed with chemicals dispersed from airplanes. Children who are refugees from war also may be exposed to environmental contaminants such as depleted uranium. As the climate changes, more children will live with extreme heat. Pediatric clinicians should be aw

War and Health: the devastating impact of conflict on Wellbeing and Humanitarian Crises.

Health is a precious asset, essential for both individuals and communities. The wars that have affected various parts of the world in recent years have had a detrimental impact on health, leading to malnutrition and an increased vulnerability to epidemic diseases among the population, especially the poorest. Hospitals and healthcare facilities themselves have become primary strategic targets in many war zones. The destruction of infrastructure and hospitals, along with challenges in obtaining clean water and access to medicines, has contributed to the resurgence of epidemic diseases in countri

The emergence of "personhood" in organ procurement.

This article begins and ends with an account of the actions of one person. I propose that such heroics are rooted in an instinctual recognition of "personhood" as it emerges from a particular human "other." I propose that heroism grounded in the recognition of "personhood" is descriptive of those acts of organ donation that are founded on free will. The moral principles involved in deliberations for organ transplantation can provide a duplication of concerns (recipient and donor). However, the enterprise of organ transplantation increasingly depends on the altruism of free-will donation, the a

Reasons for participation and experiences of women in an antibody-mediated HIV prevention clinical trial in Malawi.

INTRODUCTION: in the Antibody-Mediated Prevention (AMP) trials, a broadly neutralizing antibody called VRC01 was infused intravenously every two months to test its safety and HIV prevention efficacy. The AMP trial conducted in sub-Saharan Africa, called HVTN 703, enrolled women without HIV who were not pregnant or breastfeeding but who were behaviorally vulnerable to HIV-1 infection. We conducted a qualitative study in Malawi to explore the motivations and experiences of trial participants. METHODS: between September and December 2018, we purposively selected and interviewed 12 out of 100 wom

Blood donors and factors impacting the blood donation decision: motives for donating blood in Turkish sample.

BACKGROUND: Donations in Turkey are insufficient to cover the high transfusion needs arising from large numbers of thalassemia and sickle cell anemia patients and increasing demands for blood due to advanced surgery and cancer treatment. The most acceptable means to get blood is voluntary blood donation and the blood donor system in Turkey mostly depends on a combination of voluntary and involuntary donors. The main aim of this study is to explore the motivations of Turkish voluntary blood donors toward blood donation and to determine predictors of blood donation motivation. MATERIALS AND MET

Coping and the decision to hospitalize in emergency psychiatry.

This study was done to clarify whether and in what way a patient's coping repertoire can be linked to the disposition decision in a psychiatric emergency service. For 1 year, all consultations (N = 1439) of a psychiatric emergency service were documented in a detailed questionnaire covering sociodemographic and diagnostic data as well as information about the disposition decision. Depending on disposition, three groups were identified: outpatients (N = 530), inpatients (N = 481), and a nonintervention group (N = 428). In addition, over a 5-month period, patients were requested to fill in the "

Law and medical ethics in organ transplantation surgery.

This article in the series describes how UK law and medical ethics have evolved to accommodate developments in organ transplantation surgery. August committees have formulated definitions of the point of death of the person which are compatible with the lawful procurement of functioning vital organs from cadavers. Some of the complexities of dead donor rules are examined. Live donors are a major source of kidneys and the laws that protect them are considered. Financial inducements and other incentives to donate erode the noble concept of altruism, but should they be unlawful?

Emotion Regulation Strategies in Educational, Work and Sport Contexts: An Approach in Five Countries.

One of the greatest challenges in the domain of emotional regulation is comprehending the functionality of strategies and their utilization in various social contexts. In this sense, this study analyzes differences in the use and efficacy of regulation strategies, particularly of interpersonal strategies like altruism, social support, negotiation, mediation, regulation, and rituals, in samples of workers (N = 687) and students (N = 959) from Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Spain, and Uruguay, and athletes (N =144) from Spain. Moral reasoning in women with posttraumatic stress disorder related to childhood abuse.

BACKGROUND: Preliminary evidence suggests that relative to healthy controls, patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) show deficits on several inter-related social cognitive tasks, including theory of mind, and emotion comprehension. Systematic investigations examining other aspects of social cognition, including moral reasoning, have not been conducted in PTSD stemming from childhood trauma. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a comprehensive assessment of moral reasoning performance in individuals with PTSD stemming from childhood abuse. METHOD: Moral reasoning performance was assessed in 28 w
