Beneficial effects of aluminum on the progression of lead-induced nephropathy in rats.

We studied the effect of aluminum on lead-induced nephropathy in male albino rats. Five groups of male albino rats were given either water only or lead acetate (125 mg/kg body weight) and/or aluminum chloride (50 mg/kg body weight or 100 mg/kg body weight) for a period of 90 days. Aluminum was found to prevent the lead-induced increase in the relative organ (kidney) weight in a dose-dependent manner. Aluminum also prevented lead-induced increase in plasma creatinine levels of the treated animals. Estimation of lead concentration in kidneys of different treatment groups revealed that the net de

Study of potential transfer of aluminum to the brain via the olfactory pathway.

Many employees in the aluminum industry are exposed to a range of aluminum compounds by inhalation, and the presence of ultrafine particles in the workplace has become a concern to occupational health professionals. Some metal salts and metal oxides have been shown to enter the brain through the olfactory route, bypassing the blood-brain barrier, but few studies have examined whether aluminum compounds also use this pathway. In this context, we sought to determine whether aluminum was found in rat olfactory bulbs and whether its transfer depended on physicochemical characteristics such as solu

Effects of chemically amended litter on broiler performances, atmospheric ammonia concentration, and phosphorus solubility in litter.

The effects of 6 different litter amendments on broiler performance, level of atmospheric ammonia (NH3) concentration, and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in litter was determined. Through 3 experiments conducted on 2 different commercial farms, one chemical amendment was added to the litter and then was compared with a control. Broiler performance was not affected by any of the amendments except the ferrous sulfate amendment for which mortality was 25.5%. Application of aluminum chloride (AlCl3 x 6H2O) to the litter lowered atmospheric ammonia concentrations at 42 d by 97.2%, whereas ferrou

Clinical studies of sweat rate reduction by an over-the-counter soft-solid antiperspirant and comparison with a prescription antiperspirant product in male panelists.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with axillary hyperhidrosis have much higher than average sweat rates and are often prescribed anhydrous aluminum chloride (AlCl(3)) solutions. Topical application of these solutions can be irritating to the skin, resulting in poor compliance and lower than desired efficacy. OBJECTIVE: Demonstrate the efficacy of an over the counter "clinical strength" soft-solid antiperspirant using a night time application regimen and compare to a prescription aluminum chloride (6.5%) antiperspirant using male panelists. METHODS: Gravimetric hot room efficacy testing (100 F and 35%

Parenteral aluminum induces liver injury in a newborn piglet model.

PURPOSE: Parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis remains a significant problem, especially for the surgical neonate. Aluminum is a toxic element known to contaminate parenteral nutrition. We hypothesize that parenterally administered aluminum causes liver injury similar to that seen in parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis. METHODS: Twenty 3- to 6-day-old domestic pigs were divided into 5 equal groups. A control group received daily intravenous 0.9% sodium chloride. Each subject in experimental groups received intravenous aluminum chloride at 1500 μg/kg per day for 1, 2, 3, or 4 wee

Effects of etidronate-mediated suppression of bone remodeling on aluminum-induced de novo bone formation.

The mechanism by which aluminum chloride stimulates de novo bone formation is unknown. To evaluate the role of bone remodeling and mature osteoblastic function in aluminum-induced neoosteogenesis, we compared the osteogenic effects of aluminum in normal beagles to those in animals with low turnover osteomalacia induced by treatment with etidronate [1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphoric acid (HEBP)]. As assessed by quantitative bone histomorphology, beagles treated with HEBP developed low turnover osteomalacia characterized by a 78% reduction in osteoblast number, a 5.5-fold increase in osteoid volu

Aluminum and ABC transporter activity.

Aluminum is the third most common element on Earth´s crust and despite its wide use in our workaday life it has been associated with several health risks after overexposure. In the present study the impact of aluminum salts upon ABC transporter activity was studied in the P-GP-expressing human blood-brain barrier cell line hCMEC/D3, in MDCKII cells overexpressing BCRP and MRP2, respectively, and in freshly isolated, functionally intact kidney tubules from Atlantic killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus), which express the analog ABC transporters, P-gp, Bcrp and Mrp2. In contrast to previous findings

Histomorphological evaluations on the frontal cortex extrapyramidal cell layer following administration of N-Acetyl cysteine in aluminum induced neurodegeneration rat model.

Aluminum is a potent neurotoxin used in animal models of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease (AD), in which oxidative stress mediates tissue pathogenesis in vivo. N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a glutathione precursor with reported antioxidant and neuroprotective potentials. Recent therapy for combating AD is known to provide only symptomatic relief thus necessitating the discovery of new drugs and their mechanism of action. This study was aimed to demonstrate the in vivo neuroprotective effect of NAC against aluminum (Al3+)-induced neuro-degeneration in rats (a model for AD). Twen

Use of TLC-Densitometric Method for Determination of Valproic Acid in Capsules.

Determination of valproic acid in the drug was carried out on the aluminum silica gel 60F254 plates and using acetone-water-chloroform-ethanol-ammonia at a volume ratio of 30:1:8:5:11 as the mobile phase, respectively. Two methods of detection of valproic acid were used. The first was a 2% aqueous CuSO4×5H2O solution, and the second was a 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein-aluminum chloride-iron (III) chloride system. The applied TLC-densitometric method is selective, linear, accurate, precise, and robust, regardless of the visualizing reagent used for the determination of valproic acid in Convulex cap

Superiority of thoracoscopic sympathectomy over medical management for the palmoplantar subset of severe hyperhidrosis.

Severe hyperhidrosis is a disabling disorder whose management is controversial. Medical treatment consists of topical aluminum chloride, oral anticholinergics, ionotophoresis, and botulinum toxin A (Botox) injections. Despite the minimally invasive nature of thoracoscopic sympathectomy, there is a common perception that surgery is only a "last resort." The palmoplantar subtype of hyperhidrosis is particularly problematic for patients professionally and socially. The purpose of our study was to determine the safety, efficacy, and side effects of the various medical treatments vs. bilateral thor

Development of an AlCl3-Urea Ionic Liquid for the Electroless Deposition of Aluminum on Carbon Nanotubes.

Unlike the easy electroless deposition of other metals, the deposition of aluminum can be challenging. This is because the standard reduction potential of aluminum lies outside the electrochemical window (EW) of water. Ionic liquids such as AlCl3-1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (EMIC) have been used because of their wide EW. Here, we introduce a novel ionic liquid for electroless deposition of aluminum by reacting AlCl3 and urea, with lithium aluminum hydride (LAH) as a reducing agent. Additionally, we report the first successful effort in coating carbon nanotubes (CNTs), as an example of

[Antiperspirants for the therapy of focal hyperhidrosis].

In Europe often no clear distinction is made between deodorant and antiperspirant. Particularly in Germany, the labeling "deo" is used for both. Only antiperspirants are capable of influencing the activity of eccrine sweat glands. In the treatment of focal hyperhidrosis, the use of aluminum chloride solutions represents the first choice. The efficacy is well documented in a variety of studies. Subjective side effects include pruritus and - less often - irritant dermatitis, which can be treated symptomatically and usually does not require discontinuation of the treatment. Rare variants of focal

Effects of metal salt addition on odor and process stability during the anaerobic digestion of municipal waste sludge.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an effective way to recover energy and nutrients from organic waste; however, several issues including the solubilization of bound nutrients and the production of corrosive, highly odorous and toxic volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) in AD biogas can limit its wider adoption. This study explored the effects of adding two different doses of ferric chloride, aluminum sulfate and magnesium hydroxide directly to the feed of complete mix semi-continuously fed mesophilic ADs on eight of the most odorous VSCs in AD biogas at three different organic loading rates (OLR). Aluminum-Allergen of the Year 2022.

Exposure to elemental aluminum and its salts is unavoidable. Aluminum as a metal is present in transport, construction, packaging, and electronic equipment. Aluminum salts are present in consumer products, food items and drinking water, vaccines, drugs, and antiperspirants. Aluminum in vaccines and preparations for allergen-specific immunotherapy are the major sensitization sources. The predominent clinical manifestations of aluminum allergy are pruritic subcutaneous nodules and eczematous dermatitis. Patch testing shall be performed with aluminum chloride hexahydrate (ACH) in petrolatum. The

Functional and morphological changes in cultured neurons of rat cerebral cortex induced by long-term application of aluminum.

Aluminum is an environmental neurotoxin and a suspected risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. The neurotoxicity of aluminum on cultured neurons of rat cerebral cortex was investigated using an assay system for synapse formation and immunohistochemistry. The frequency of spontaneous oscillations of intracellular Ca2+, which is correlated to the number of synapses, was decreased after exposure to 100 microM of aluminum chloride for 22 days. Long-term application of aluminum (48 days) caused aggregation of cell bodies and fasciculation of processes. Processes and cell bodies were strongly stained
