By raising the alveolar ridge, relatively or absolutely, in partially or totally edentulous patients, preprosthetic surgery makes possible an improvement in the bed for the denture. Raising the height of the ridge, relatively, by deepening the sulci surrounding the jaw, can be achieved by vestibuloplasty and grafts to the floor of the mouth. However, for these procedures it is essential that there still be sufficient bone (at least 20 mm in the mandible). A surgical technique for the bone graft repair of alveolar clefts is described, and an evaluation of the conditions of 30 patients who have undergone that procedure is reported. Evaluation was made specifically for the preoperative and postoperative presence of oronasal fistula, postoperative eruption of previously unerupted teeth into the graft, soft and hard tissue periodontal status, and radiographic evidence of bone fill in the previous cleft defect resulting in alveolar segmental stabilization.

In 1975, a method of operation was described whereby the alveolar ridge of the mandible is osteotomied and moved on the visor principle. The two parts are fixed together with wires, thereby increasing the absolute height of the mandibular alveolar ridge. Anterolateral alveolar osteotomy was performed in a patient who experienced facial trauma in a traffic accident. Bony sequela had remained in the maxilla after the emergency surgery, affecting the facial appearance. A different technique of osteotomy for this unusual type of deformity is presented.

Freeze-dried bone marrow has been used for grafting alveolar clefts. In all instances in which canines were present, they erupted through the grafted allogeneic bone. The ability to avoid donor site morbidity, coupled with successful eruption of canines through the grafted allogeneic bone, represents an additional technique for treating alveolar clefts.

The orthodontic treatment period with extractions is prolonged in many cases because of the limited rate of biological tooth movement. An approach using transport distraction osteogenesis was designed to reduce orthodontic and orthognathic treatment time. Children with repaired cleft lip/palate require secondary closure of the alveolar cleft and, often, nasolabial revision. We describe a technique performed in 61 patients for harvesting bone for the alveolar defect and dermis for augmentation of the median tubercle, taking both from the posterior iliac region. The advantages of the posterior approach are as follows: (1) the same donor site is used for cancellous bone and dermal graft and (2) the child's appearance is improved along with alveolar cleft grafting.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the outcomes of secondary alveolar bone grafting (SABG) in patients with complete, unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) operated on before eruption of the permanent canine.
STUDY DESIGN: Sixty-five periapical radiographs from 41 patients with left UCLP and 24 with right UCLP (9 to 12 years old at SABG), were analyzed retrospectively for the amount of bone in the cleft site according to the Bergland and Chelsea scales, and for the occurrence of canine eruption (CE) through the neoformed bone.

Grafting of the alveolar ridge with autogenous bone is an integral stage of contemporary management of complete cleft lip and palate cases. A new surgical technique for secondary bone-grafting for closure of residual clefts in the alveolar process and hard palate is described. The technique improves the anatomy in the cleft region and, thus improves the possibility of total dental rehabilitation. The treatment results based on experiences with 293 patients will be published in a future paper, and must be estimated as promising. The technique minimizes hospitalization as well as post-operative discomfort.

STUDY: In this study 24 patients with tumours of the mandible, mandibular resection, neck dissection and reconstruction by microvascular iliac crest (13) or scapula transplants (11) were examined following implantological treatment.

Six patients who participated in a clinical study comparing the response of periodontal osseous defects to either grafting with Periograf (durapatite) hydroxylapatite (HA) ceramic or debridement alone (DEBR) were followed under an active maintenance program for 5 years. This study evaluated the effects of calcium phosphate ceramics, hydroxylapatite, and tricalcium phosphate implants on tooth eruption and development.
