The emergence of drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains is a threat to global health necessitating the discovery of novel chemotherapeutic agents. Natural products drug discovery, which previously led to the discovery of rifamycins, is a valuable approach in this endeavor. Against this backdrop, we set out to investigate the in vitro antimycobacterial properties of medicinal plants from Ghana and South Africa, evaluating 36 extracts and their 252 corresponding solid phase extraction (SPE) generated fractions primarily against the non-pathogenic Mycobacterium smegmatis and Mycobacter

Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma associated with infection by Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV). PEL is an aggressive disease with extremely poor prognosis when treated with conventional chemotherapy. Narciclasine, a natural product present in Amaryllidaceae family of flowering plants including daffodils, belongs to a class of molecules termed 'isocarbostyril alkaloid'. We have found that narciclasine displays preferential cytotoxicity towards PEL at low nanomolar concentrations and is approximately 10 and 100-fold more potent than its structural

Achieving a functional cure for chronic hepatitis B remains a major challenge, as conventional therapies struggle to eliminate the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and subsequently restore adaptive antiviral immunity. Lycorine (LY), a compound with broad-spectrum antiviral activity, has shown particular promise inhibiting HBsAg secretion. However, its clinical application is severely limited by significant cytotoxicity, the induction of apoptosis, a short half-life, and adverse in vivo effects. To overcome these barriers and enhance its therapeutic potential, we designed a self-assembled na

Human infection with highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza virus causes severe respiratory diseases. Currently, the drugs against H5N1 are limited to virus-targeted inhibitors. However, drug resistance caused by these inhibitors is becoming a serious threat to global public health. An alternative strategy to reduce the resistance risk is to develop antiviral drugs targeting host cell proteins. In this study, we demonstrated that cytochrome c oxidase subunit 4 isoform 1 (COX41) of host cell plays an important role in H5N1 infection. Overexpression of COX41 promoted viral replication, which was inhib

Medicinal plants have been considered as promising sources of drugs in treating various cancers. Crinum amabile (C. amabile), a plant species from the Amaryllidaceae family, is claimed to be a potential source for cancer chemotherapeutic compounds. Here, we aimed to investigate the potential of C. amabile as an anticancer agent. Dried leaves of C. amabile were serially extracted and our findings showed that chloroform extract (CE) was shown to exhibit cytotoxic effect against all cancer cell lines used. This active extract was further fractionated in which F5 fraction was shown to possess the

Lycorine, a natural alkaloid extracted from the Amaryllidaceae plant family, has been reported to exhibit anti‑cancer effects in various types of cancer cells. However, the molecular mechanisms through which lycorine exhibits anti‑hepatoblastoma activity are unclear. In the present study, the inhibitory effects of lycorine on the proliferation and migration of HepG2 hepatoblastoma cells were investigated. Lycorine inhibited the proliferation of HepG2 cells in a dose‑dependent manner by inducing cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase, via downregulation of cyclin A, cyclin B1 and cyclin dependent

Acute myocardial injury (AMI) is often secondary to sepsis, which is a life-threatening disease associated with severe cardiac inflammation. Narciclasine, a plant alkaloid isolated from different members of the Amaryllidaceae family, has been extensively characterized as an antitumor and anti-inflammatory compound. In addition, autophagy is critical for sepsis-induced myocardial injury. However, the role and mechanism of autophagy by which narciclasine confers cardioprotection are still unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the underlying mechanism by which narciclasine affects the p

The Sceletium-type alkaloids, known for their anxiolytic and antidepressant activities, have been recently found to be biosynthesized in Narcissus cv. Hawera, which is largely used as an ornamental plant. An alkaloid fraction enriched with Sceletium-type alkaloids from the plant has shown promising antidepressant and anxiolytic activities. In the present study, qualitative and quantitative analyses of the alkaloids in the plant organs were performed during one vegetation season by GC-MS. The alkaloid pattern and total alkaloid content was found to depend strongly on the stage of development an

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is a common inflammatory skin disease recognized by the World Health Organization as "an incurable chronic, noninfectious, painful, disfiguring and disabling disease." The fact that metabolic syndrome (MetS) is the most common and important comorbidities of psoriasis suggests an important role of lipid metabolism in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Narciclasine (Ncs) is an alkaloid isolated from the Amaryllidaceae plants. Its biological activities include antitumor, antibacterial, antiinflammatory, anti-angiogenic and promoting energy expenditure to improve dietinduced ob

Lycorine and galanthamine are toxic alkaloids found in Narcissus. Using HPLC analysis and quantitative NMR analysis, the degrees of purity of these standard reference materials purchased in 2013, 2019, 2021, and 2025 were calculated and compared. The results showed almost no degradation of any component. However, other findings suggest that the lycorine hydrochloride weight changed because of moisture absorption (hydration). This weight change might be avoided by stocking lycorine hydrochloride monohydrate, which is originally hydrated. Maintaining a stock of lycorine and galanthamine referenc

In this study, ten phenylpropionyl phenylethylamines, including five previously undescribed ones (1a/b, 2a/b, and 3), five known analogues (4-8), and two established phenylpropanoids precursors (9, 10) were isolated from the aerial parts of Chloranthus henryi Hemsl. Their structures, including absolute configurations, were determined by high-resolution mass spectrometry, enantio-separation, electronic circular dichroism calculation, and single crystal diffraction. Compounds 1a and 1b were the first examples of natural hetero-[2 + 2] cycloaddition products between phenylpropionyl phenylethylami

Plant-derived natural compounds hold significant potential in antiviral drug development, characterized by their diverse and broad-spectrum against multiple viral pathogens. Current evidence indicates that these compounds not only interfere with critical stages of the viral life cycle, but also modulate host immune responses. Antiviral potential of narciclasine against several RNA viruses has been documented, but its inhibitory activity against pseudorabies virus (PRV) remains unexplored. In this study, we systematically evaluated the antiviral activity of narciclasine in vitro and in vivo. Th

A major problem in flower bulb cultivation is weed control. Synthetic herbicides are mainly used, although they cause a range of problems, and integrated weed control through application of naturally occurring allelochemicals would be highly desirable. Flower bulb production creates large amounts of leftover biomass. Utilizing this source for weed control may provide new applications of the bulb crops. We therefore screened 33 flower bulb extracts for allelochemical activity against weeds. Several methanol and chloroform extracts were observed to inhibit germination and growth of Senecio vulga
