Vaping: Respiratory Impacts and Public Health Challenges in the Americas.

The use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), also known as electronic-cigarette (e-cig) or vaping, is a public health threat throughout the Americas. Teenagers and young adults have the highest rates of use of these tobacco products. However, vaping has a gateway effect, which has led to dual use of both combustible tobacco and nicotine vaping products, which is concerning given that greater adverse health effects of e-cigarettes are seen in the context of co-use with combustible tobacco. Multiple policy approaches have been used across North and South America, with varying success.

Data-driven predictions of potential Leishmania vectors in the Americas.

The incidence of vector-borne diseases is rising as deforestation, climate change, and globalization bring humans in contact with arthropods that can transmit pathogens. In particular, incidence of American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL), a disease caused by parasites transmitted by sandflies, is increasing as previously intact habitats are cleared for agriculture and urban areas, potentially bringing people into contact with vectors and reservoir hosts. Previous evidence has identified dozens of sandfly species that have been infected with and/or transmit Leishmania parasites. However, there i

A Review of Mammarenaviruses and Rodent Reservoirs in the Americas.

In the Americas, infectious viral diseases caused by viruses of the genus Mammarenavirus have been reported since the 1960s. Such diseases have commonly been associated with land use changes, which favor abundance of generalist rodent species. In the Americas-where the rates of land use change are among the highest worldwide-at least 1326 of all 2277 known rodent species have been reported. We conducted a literature review of studies between 1960 and 2020, to establish the current and historical knowledge about genotypes of mammarenaviruses and their rodent reservoirs in the Americas. Our over

Rhinosporidiosis in the Americas: A Systematic Review of Native Cases.

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic mucosal infection caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi, an aquatic protistan parasite. It presents as nasal or ocular polypoidal or vascularized masses. It is endemic in tropical and subtropical areas, especially in South Asia; R. seeberi´s endemicity in the Americas is often overlooked. The objective of this study was to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with rhinosporidiosis in the Americas, its management, and patient outcomes. This study is a systematic review of cases of human rhinosporidiosis in the Americas reported in the litera

Zika virus in the Americas: Early epidemiological and genetic findings.

Brazil has experienced an unprecedented epidemic of Zika virus (ZIKV), with ~30,000 cases reported to date. ZIKV was first detected in Brazil in May 2015, and cases of microcephaly potentially associated with ZIKV infection were identified in November 2015. We performed next-generation sequencing to generate seven Brazilian ZIKV genomes sampled from four self-limited cases, one blood donor, one fatal adult case, and one newborn with microcephaly and congenital malformations. Results of phylogenetic and molecular clock analyses show a single introduction of ZIKV into the Americas, which we esti

Mitochondrial diversity in human head louse populations across the Americas.

Anthropological studies suggest that the genetic makeup of human populations in the Americas is the result of diverse processes including the initial colonization of the continent by the first people plus post-1492 European migrations. Because of the recent nature of some of these events, understanding the geographical origin of American human diversity is challenging. However, human parasites have faster evolutionary rates and larger population sizes allowing them to maintain greater levels of genetic diversity than their hosts. Thus, we can use human parasites to provide insights into some a

Virologic surveillance for wild-type rubella viruses in the Americas.

The goal of eliminating rubella from the Americas by 2010 was established in 2003. Subsequently, a systematic nomenclature for wild-type rubella viruses (wtRVs) was established, wtRVs circulating in the region were catalogued, and importations of wtRVs into a number of countries were documented. The geographic distribution of wtRVs of various genotypes in the Americas, interpreted in the context of the global distribution of these viruses, contributed to the documentation of rubella elimination from some countries. Data from virologic surveillance also contributed to the conclusion that viruse

Dengue in the Americas and Southeast Asia: do they differ?

The populations of Southeast Asia (SE Asia) and tropical America are similar, and all four dengue viruses of Asian origin are endemic in both regions. Yet, during comparable 5-year periods, SE Asia experienced 1.16 million cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), principally in children, whereas in the Americas there were 2.8 million dengue fever (DF) cases, principally in adults, and only 65,000 DHF cases. This review aims to explain these regional differences. In SE Asia, World War II amplified Aedes aegypti populations and the spread of dengue viruses. In the Americas, efforts to eradicate

Blindness and visual impairment in the Americas and the Caribbean.

AIM: To summarise available data on the prevalence and causes of visual impairment and blindness in the Americas and the Caribbean. METHODS: The published literature was searched in Medline and LILACS using the following key words: blindness, visual impairment, prevalence. Articles were reviewed, and the references of the articles were also searched for relevant articles, which were also reviewed. RESULTS: Using the mortality in children under the age of 5 as an indicator, the overall prevalence of childhood blindness (in the under age 15 group) for the region was estimated at 0.45/1000, wit

Viral hemorrhagic fevers including hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in the Americas.

The term viral hemorrhagic fever refers to an acute systemic illness with a propensity for bleeding and shock. The viral hemorrhagic fevers endemic in the Americas include yellow fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever, the South American hemorrhagic fevers, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. Because these diseases are primarily zoonotic, the distribution of any given virus is generally restricted by the distribution of its natural reservoir or arthropod vector. A high index of suspicion, detailed investigation of the travel and exposure history of the patient, a

Ecology of malaria vectors in the Americas and future direction.

The resurgence of malaria in the Americas has renewed interest in Anopheles biology. Anopheles darlingi, An. albimanus, An. nuneztovai and An. aquasalis are reconfirmed as major malaria vectors and other species are playing important roles in regional malaria transmission. Adult biting activity and larval ecology are discussed in detail. Seasonal abundance and daily biting activity of Anophelines vary considerably among species and geographically for the same species. Anopheles albimanus has the least amount of variation in biting activity over its range and An. darlingi has the greatest. All

Child mental health in the Americas: a public health approach.

The systematic, population-wide application of preventive measures based on what is known about the causes and outcomes of psychiatric disorders can markedly reduce morbidity from mental ill health among children in the Americas. The actions proposed here rely partly upon increasing access for all women and their children to thoroughly tested obstetric and pediatric care; in part they depend on improving nutrition and opportunities for cognitive stimulation; and in part they call for enhancing the mental health skills of primary care practitioners by appropriate in-service training. There are

Update on ISI survey: Europe, North America and South America.

It is well known that the diagnostic process in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) may be excessively prolonged, with negative consequences for the patients and their families. The ISIS study assessed the diagnostic process in 201 patients affected by ALS from 6 different countries (Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Spain and USA). The median time from onset to diagnosis ranged from 12 months in Spain to 17 months in Italy. The median time for patients to have a first consultation with a physician was 2 months (range: 1-1.5 months) and with a neurologist was 6-9 months. The median time neede

Klossiella equi, an underreported parasite of equids in the Americas.

Klossiella equi Baumann, 1946 (Apicomplexa: Coccidia) is a globally distributed adeleorinid parasite that infects the kidneys of equid hosts. Considered an uncommon parasite, when K. equi is detected, it is typically an incidental finding during histologic examination of the kidneys as part of routine necropsy. In the present study, kidney was collected opportunistically from 3 different equine populations: 1) routine necropsies at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC; n = 48); 2) natural mortalities from the Sable Island wild horse herd (n = 25); and 3) routine necropsies of animals from Unive

First isolation of Mycobacterium brisbanense from humans in the Americas.

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium brisbanense is a rare nontuberculous mycobacteria and was for the first time detected in the Americas in humans. However, this, like several other species of mycobacteria, may be underreported worldwide. Therefore, their study is increasingly important. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this article is to report and analyse the first seven human isolates of M. brisbanense in the Americas, derived from six Brazilian patients. METHODS: We sequenced the genes hsp65, rpoB and 16s rRNA, of seven mycobacterial clinical isolates, constructed a phylogenetic tree, and determined their

Endomyocardiofibrosis in the Americas Collaborative Study: The EMF-SIAC Registry.

Endomyocardiofibrosis (EMF) is a restrictive cardiomyopathy characterized by subendocardial fibrosis due to eosinophilic myocardial infiltration. EMF may commonly present with heart failure (HF) or atrial fibrillation (AF). Immunosuppression can be effective in early stages, but not in the chronic phase. Our objective was to describe the characteristics of EMF patients in the Americas. This registry is a retrospective multicenter cross-sectional study including patients ≥18 years-old with EMF diagnosed by imaging methods, according to the Mocumbi criteria.
