The human placental microsome and breast carcinoma mitochondrial/microsomal estrone sulfatase activity were characterized and inhibition studies performed. A novel nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor, TAN-931, was isolated from the culture filtrate of a soil isolate fungus, No. 8974. The strain was identified as Penicillium funiculosum No. 8974. To further elucidate the role of progesterone in regulating granulosa cell function, human granulosa and luteal cells were obtained from follicular aspirates of women undergoing in vitro fertilization and placed in culture.
