The effects of 8 weeks of motor skill training on cardiorespiratory fitness and endurance performance in children with developmental coordination disorder.

Interventions based on everyday motor skills have been developed to be effective in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of motor skill training on exercise tolerance and cardiorespiratory fitness in children with DCD. Children were assigned to 3 groups: an experimental training group comprising 14 children with DCD, a control nontraining group comprising 13 children with DCD, and a control nontraining group comprising 14 typically developed children. All participants were tested twice with an interval of 8-weeks o

Running Power at Lactate Threshold and Lactate Turnpoint Are Unaltered by Treadmill Incline.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the effect of treadmill incline on wearable-derived running power output (rPO) at the lactate threshold (LT) and lactate turnpoint (LTP). METHODS: Thirteen trained runners (5 females; 23 [5] y) completed 3 rPO-matched, step-incremental treadmill tests to exhaustion at fixed inclines of 0%, 5%, and 10%. Running speed was adjusted to maintain consistent rPO across conditions using standardized calculations. During each test, breath-by-breath oxygen uptake (V˙O2) and rPO (via Stryd power meter) were continuously measured. Blood lactate concentration was measured

Effects of skating and diagonal skiing techniques on results and some physiological variables.

In this study, the effects of skating and diagonal techniques on skiing load at various speeds were compared. When skiing at the same speed, subjects' heart rates were significantly lower when using the skating technique than when using the diagonal technique (p less than 0.05). At maximal speed, skating technique gave a significantly higher speed at the same heart rate (p less than 0.001) than diagonal technique. Above the anaerobic threshold (4 mmol.L-1) blood lactic acid levels remained significantly lower (p less than 0.005) when using the skating technique than when using the diagonal tec

Dynamic heart rate and power output modeling to predict lactate threshold in recreational cyclists.

Objective: This study presents a non-invasive method for estimating the second lactate threshold (LT2) in cyclists by modeling the dynamic heart rate (HR) response to power output (PO) using discrete-time transfer function (TF) techniques.Approach: Eleven trained recreational cyclists completed an incremental step test with simultaneous HR, PO, gas exchange, and blood lactate measurements. Two TF models were developed: a time-invariant (TI) model with constant parameters and a time-variant (TV) model whose parameters adapt over time to reflect physiological changes. LT2 was estimated from devi

Cardiac Acoustic Biomarkers in Patients with Heart Failure during Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing: An Exploratory Study.

Objective Exercise therapy as part of cardiac rehabilitation is one of the most effective treatments for patients with chronic heart failure (HF). The anaerobic threshold (AT) determined by an exhaled gas analysis during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) is used to prescribe the appropriate level of exercise therapy. However, CPX using an exhaled gas analysis is not widely performed because of its cost, complexity, and the need for skilled staff. Therefore, a simpler and inexpensive method for determining AT without respiratory gas measurements is required in patients with HF. The present

Cardiopulmonary exercise performance and factors associated with aerobic capacity in neuromuscular diseases.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Aerobic deconditioning, due to lower levels of physical activity, could impact independence for people with neuromuscular conditions. We report the maximal cardiopulmonary response in a cohort of people with Charcot Marie Tooth disease type 1A (CMT 1A) and inclusion body myositis (IBM). We also explored potential predictors of aerobic capacity with measures of physical impairment and functional performance. METHODS: Participants underwent maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) using a semi-recumbent cycle ergometer. Data were analyzed to determine the peak O2 consu

Relationship between isocapnic buffering and maximal aerobic capacity in athletes.

This study was performed to clarify the relationship between isocapnic buffering and maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max) in athletes. A group of 15 trained athletes aged 21.1 (SD 2.6) years was studied. Incremental treadmill exercise was performed using a modified version of Bruce's protocol for determination of the anaerobic threshold (AT) and the respiratory compensation point (RC). Ventilatory and gas exchange responses were measured with an aeromonitor and expressed per unit of body mass. Heart rate and ratings of perceived exertion were recorded continuously during exercise. The mean VO2max

[Ventriculo-arterial coupling during aerobic and anaerobic exercise in normal subjects].

Physiological differences in aerobic and anaerobic exercise were assessed within the coupling framework between the left ventricle and the arterial system. In 10 normal men, the anaerobic threshold was estimated using sequential breath gas analysis during incremental ergometer tests. Direct arterial pressure and left ventricular echocardiograms were simultaneously recorded as its pressure was changed by phenylephrine or nitroprusside, and the slope (Ees) and volume axis intercept (Vo) of the end-systolic pressure (ESP)-volume relationship were determined. The effective arterial elastance (Ea)

Occurrence of methylmercury in aerobic environments: Evidence of mercury bacterial methylation based on simulation experiments.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is mainly produced by anaerobic δ-proteobacteria such as sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). However, mercury bio-methylation has also been found to occur in the aerobic soil of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). Using γ-proteobacterial TGR bacteria (TGRB) and δ-proteobacterial Desulfomicrobium escambiense strains, the efficiency of mercury methylation and demethylation was evaluated using an isotope tracer technique. Kinetics simulation showed that the bacterial Hg methylation rate (km) of TGRB3 was 4.36 × 10-9 pg·cell-1·h-1, which was significantly lower than that of D. esca

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing in syndrome X.

Patients with syndrome X have been found to have an abnormal coronary blood flow reserve. The physical performance during exercise, however, has been incompletely investigated. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) is a reliable noninvasive method to provide indexes of lung, heart, circulation, and muscle functions. In 15 patients (10 women) with syndrome X and in age and sex-matched normal individuals, CPX was performed twice a day (8 AM and 4 PM) on two separate occasions 2 months apart. Time and oxygen consumption at peak exercise, at ventilatory anaerobic and electrocardiographic threshol

Exercise testing to predict outcome in idiopathic versus associated pulmonary arterial hypertension.

We tested the ability of exercise testing to predict not only survival, but also time to clinical worsening (TTCW) in idiopathic versus associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). 136 patients with PAH (85 idiopathic and 51 with associated conditions) underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing and a 6-min walk test. Death or transplantation, and clinical worsening events were recorded. 32 patients died and four had lung transplantation. In a univariate analysis, PAH patients survival was associated with oxygen uptake (V'(O(2))) at peak exercise and at the anaerobic threshold, ventilatory

Stroke volume augmentation improves with PH-targeted therapy in patients with exercise-induced pulmonary hypertension.

UNLABELLED: Exercise-induced pulmonary arterial hypertension (EiPH) is often treated with off-label use of pulmonary arterial hypertension-targeted therapy (PH-targeted therapy). Most measures of PAH severity are normal in patients with EiPH, posing challenges in evaluating for physiological improvement in patients treated for EiPH. In this study, we used non-invasive cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) to assess for objective improvement in patients treated for EiPH. Fourteen patients were included in the study, diagnosed with EiPH by invasive CPET with simultaneous right heart catheteriz

Quantification and Comparison of Risks Associated with Wastewater Use in Spray Irrigation.

In the U.S., spray irrigation is the most common method used in agriculture and supplementing with animal wastewater has the potential to reduce water demands. However, this could expose individuals to respiratory pathogens such as Legionella pneumophila and nontuberculosis Mycobacteria (NTM). Disinfection with methods like anaerobic digestion is an option but can increase concentrations of cytotoxic ammonia (personal communication). Our study aimed to model the annual risks of infection from these bacterial pathogens and the air concentrations of ammonia and determine if anaerobically digesti
