Current surveys on the prevalence and distribution of Dirofilaria spp. in dogs in Germany.

The Central Upper-Rhine (Baden-Württemberg, Germany) is one of the warmest regions in Germany and also harbours abundant numbers of mosquitoes. Case reports on presumably autochthonous occurrence of Dirofilaria spp. were reported previously and were a reason for a further investigation into the occurrence of vector-borne pathogens. For this purpose, 44 hunting dogs from the Central Upper-Rhine region were tested between 4(th) and 29(th) June 2007. The blood samples were tested using the Knott's test and IDEXX SNAP 4Dx test. The Knott's test revealed unsheathed microfilaria identified as Dirofi

Epidemiological analysis of tick-borne diseases in Zambia.

Tick-borne diseases are a constraint to livestock production in many developing countries as they cause high morbidity and mortality, which results in decreased production of meat, milk and other livestock by-products. The most important tick-borne diseases of livestock in sub-Saharan Africa are East Coast fever (caused by Theileria parva), babesiosis (caused by Babesia bigemina and B. bovis), anaplasmosis (caused by Anaplasma marginale) and heartwater (caused by Ehrlichia ruminantium). Despite their economic importance, information on the epidemiology of these diseases in many countries, incl

Status of the tick-borne diseases in sheep and goats in Turkey.

A serological survey using Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT) for Babesia ovis infection of sheep has been carried out in different geographical regions of Turkey. The results indicated that 71.6% of 141 sheep in Black Sea region, 70.9% of 93 sheep in central Anatolia, 80.2% of 96 sheep in Aegean region and 55.7% of 122 sheep in eastern Anatolia were seropositive. This means that B. ovis infection is endemic throughout Turkey. In addition, occurrence of B. ovis, B. motasi, Theileria hirci, T. recondita and Anaplasma ovis infections in sheep and goats has been reported previously in Turk

Anaplasmosis and babesiosis in El Salvador.

A serological survey was carried out in the Central American state of El Salvador to determine the distribution and prevalence of Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis. the results suggest that the parasites are widely distributed throughout the country and prevalence rates of 78.5% for A. marginale, 70.5% for B. bigemina and 73.5% for B. bovis were obtained. Tick counts suggest that boophilus microplus is the main blood parasite vector. Epidemiological studies showed that initial infection with the 3 blood parasites occurs in most animals during the first 7 months of life. N

Prevalence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum and coinfection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in the hard tick Ixodes ricinus in the city of Hanover (Germany).

The castor bean tick Ixodes ricinus has been found to be the main vector for Lyme borreliosis spirochetes and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in Central Europe. 1646 I. ricinus ticks from Hanover, a city located in Northern Germany, were examined for infection with A. phagocytophilum and coinfection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (sl) to obtain so far missing prevalence data for this region. The total A. phagocytophilum infection rate was 3.2% (52/1646 ticks), divided into 4.1% (32/777) adults and 2.3% (20/869) nymphs. Coinfections with B. burgdorferi sl were found in 0.9% of all tick stages.

Ticks Recovered from Opportunistically Examined Greater Grisons (Galictis vittata) in Veracruz, Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Information regarding ectoparasites associated with the greater grison (Galictis vittata) remains scarce throughout most of its geographic range, particularly in Mexico. Previous reports of tick parasitism in this mustelid are limited and restricted mainly to isolated records from Central and South America. In the present study, ticks recovered from two G. vittata individuals from Veracruz, Mexico, were identified using morphological and molecular approaches, and screened for selected bacterial microorganisms. METHODS: Two G. vittata from northern Veracruz, Mexico, were examined f

Molecular survey of tick-borne pathogens in Otobius megnini from Central Mexico with special emphasis on Bartonella detection.

Soft ticks (Argasidae) remain among the least studied hematophagous ectoparasites. One of these species, Otobius megnini, the spiny ear tick, is a widely distributed, likely Nearctic-origin species whose global spread has been facilitated by the movement of cattle and horses-its primary hosts. Despite its generalist habits and ability to parasitize a wide range of mammals, including livestock and companion animals from the orders Artiodactyla and Carnivora, its role as a potential vector of pathogens remains poorly understood. Previous studies have linked O. megnini to otitis and tissue damage

Babesia canis and other tick-borne infections in dogs in Central Poland.

Vector-borne infections constitute increasing health problem in dogs worldwide, including sled dogs, dramatically decreasing the fitness of working dogs and even leading to death. In the period 2006-2008 eighty-two blood samples were collected from eight sled dog kennels in Central Poland. The prevalence of four vector-borne infections (Babesia canis, Bartonella sp., Anaplasma/Ehrlichia and Borrelia burgdorferi) was estimated in 82 sled dogs using PCR and nested PCR for diagnosis and the same methods were used to identify the vector-borne pathogens in 26 dogs presenting at veterinary clinics w

Tick-borne pathogen diversity and clinical impact of tick-infestation in Serbia and North Macedonia.

Ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) pose an expanding health threat across Europe, yet few studies link tick infection data directly to human clinical outcomes. We conducted a prospective, cross-border "One Health" study in Serbia and North Macedonia to assess the prevalence, diversity, and potential transmission of TBPs from ticks to humans. A total of 133 tick-infested patients were enrolled at two healthcare centers (112 in Skopje, 26 in Novi Sad), and 135 ticks were collected from these individuals, alongside paired blood and serum samples. Overall, TBP DNA was detected in 66.6 % of tick

Epidemiology of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis in Zambia.

The serological prevalence of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis in the traditional farming sector of six provinces of Zambia was determined using the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) for babesiosis and the card agglutination test (CAT) for anaplasmosis. Antibodies to Babesia bigemina occurred throughout the country whereas the prevalence of B. bovis followed the distribution of its tick vector Boophilus microplus which is limited to the north-eastern part of the country. Low numbers of B. bovis serologically positive cattle were demonstrated in central and southern Province. Anaplasm

Adaptation of Anaplasma phagocytophilum to the tick vector is controlled by the transcriptional regulator Tr1.

Rickettsial pathogens are strictly dependent on the cellular biology of their hosts for survival and replication. Predominantly transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods, these vector-borne pathogens are forced to adapt between the disparate environments of their mammalian host and arthropod vector. To achieve this, the Rickettsial bacteria Anaplasma phagocytophilum undergo extensive transcriptional reprogramming, with over 41% of its genes differentially transcribed between mammals and Ixodes scapularis ticks. How the bacterium orchestrates this dramatic transcriptional reprogramming is not und

Serological prevalence of six vector-borne pathogens in dogs presented for elective ovariohysterectomy or castration in the South central region of Texas.

BACKGROUND: Most vector-borne pathogens cause zoonotic diseases. These zoonoses often have wild animal reservoirs that play a significant role in disease epidemiology. However, pet animals have also been implicated in transmission of zoonotic agents to humans. To exemplify, dogs are competent reservoir hosts for several zoonotic vector-borne bacteria and protozoa. Despite that vector-borne diseases can be life-threatening for both pets and humans, studies on pathogen seroprevalence are very limited. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the serological prevalence of six zoono

Bacterial and protozoal agents of feline vector-borne diseases in domestic and stray cats from southern Portugal.

BACKGROUND: Feline vector-borne diseases (FVBD) have emerged in recent years, showing a wider geographic distribution and increased global prevalence. In addition to their veterinary importance, domestic cats play a central role in the transmission cycles of some FVBD agents by acting as reservoirs and sentinels, a circumstance that requires a One Health approach. The aim of the present work was to molecularly detect feline vector-borne bacteria and protozoa with veterinary and zoonotic importance, and to assess associated risk factors in cats from southern Portugal. METHODS: Six hundred and

Pathogens transmitted by Ixodes ricinus.

Ixodes ricinus is the most important tick vector in central and western Europe and one of the most researched parasites. However, in the published literature on the tick and the pathogens it transmits, conjecture about specific transmission cycles and the clinical significance of certain microbes is not always clearly separated from confirmed facts. This article aims to present up-to-date, evidence-based information about the well-researched human pathogens tick-borne encephalitis virus, louping-ill virus, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and several Babesia species,
