Molecular biological identification of Babesia, Theileria, and Anaplasma species in cattle in Egypt using PCR assays, gene sequence analysis and a novel DNA microarray.

In this preliminary study, a novel DNA microarray system was tested for the diagnosis of bovine piroplasmosis and anaplasmosis in comparison with microscopy and PCR assay results. In the Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt, 164 cattle were investigated for the presence of piroplasms and Anaplasma species. All investigated cattle were clinically examined. Blood samples were screened for the presence of blood parasites using microscopy and PCR assays. Seventy-one animals were acutely ill, whereas 93 were apparently healthy. In acutely ill cattle, Babesia/Theileria species (n=11) and Anaplasma marginale

Completing the Puzzle: A Cluster of Hunting Dogs with Tick-Borne Illness from a Fishing Community in Tobago, West Indies.

Eight hunting dogs were visited by a state veterinarian on the island of Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies, as owners reported anorexia and paralysis in five of their dogs. The veterinarian observed a combination of clinical signs consistent with tick-borne illness, including fever, anorexia, anaemia, lethargy and paralysis. Blood and ticks were collected from each dog and submitted to a diagnostic laboratory for analysis. Microscopic analysis revealed a mixed infection of intracytoplasmic organisms consistent with Babesia spp. (erythrocyte) and Ehrlichia spp. (monocyte), respectively,

Clinical and serological evidence of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis in St. Lucia.

One hundred fifty-nine Holstein calves were imported into St. Lucia from the U.S.A. An outbreak of babesiosis occurred 17 days post-arrival, and an outbreak of anaplasmosis occurred 5 months after importation. Sera obtained 3, 6, and 12 months post-importation revealed a high prevalence of IFA titres to Babesia bovis and B. Bigemina 3 months after arrival and an increase in titres to Anaplasma marginale 6 months after arrival. Sera obtained from native cattle from several places on the island indicated infection rates of 80, 65 and 64% with A. marginale, B. bigemina and B. bovis, respectively.

Molecular characterization of South Indian field isolates of bovine Babesia spp. and Anaplasma spp.

Ticks and tick-borne diseases (TTBDs) are considered major causes of economic loss in the livestock sector which incur an annual control cost estimated at US$ 498.7 million in India. Among these diseases, babesiosis, theileriosis and anaplasmosis are listed among the top ten livestock diseases in India and cause significant mortality and morbidity among cattle. However, molecular characterization of bovine Babesia and Anaplasma species are scant; thus, the aim of this study is to perform molecular characterization of field isolates of Babesia spp. and Anaplasma spp. infecting bovines in Kerala

Molecular Epidemiology of Tick-Borne (Anaplasma, Babesia, Theileria) and Non-Tick Borne (Toxoplasma gondii) Pathogens in Goats from Southern Punjab, Pakistan.

Pakistan ranks third globally in goat population with approximately 89 million heads in 2025; however, despite this large population base, the apparent PCR based prevalence of hemoparasitic and bacterial pathogens in goats remains largely underexplored. This study aimed to report the molecular prevalence and phylogenetic characteristics of Anaplasma ovis, Anaplasma marginale, Babesia ovis, Theileria ovis and Toxoplasma gondii in goat blood samples (n = 247) collected from two districts (Muzaffargarh and Multan) in Punjab between August till November 2025. Results indicated a significant variat

[Current status of bovine haemoparasitic diseases in Martinique (French West Indies)].

A serological survey using indirect immunofluorescence (IFAT) for bovine babesiosis (Babesia bovis and B. bigemina) and card test for anaplasmosis, indicates that these haemoparasites are widespread in Martinique. The high prevalences (62% for B. bovis, 52% for B. bigemina and 43% for Anaplasma marginale) lead to the hypothesis of an unstable epizootic situation for these three haemoparasitic diseases. However, the number of smears examined was too low to evaluate their clinical incidence. Both the American and Cuban card tests gave similar results in the detection of antibodies to A. marginal

Molecular screening of Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and Brucella in ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting farm ruminants in Peninsular Malaysia.

Ticks are obligate hematophagous arachnids that parasitize both humans and animals. While considerable research in Malaysia has focused on bacterial detection in ticks, knowledge of tick-borne Anaplasma, Ehrlichia and Brucella in farm ruminants remains limited. In this study, 1,241 ticks comprising of four species (Rhipicephalus microplus, Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides, Haemaphysalis bispinosa, and Haemaphysalis wellingtoni) were collected from 674 farm ruminants across Peninsular Malaysia. The ticks were pooled and molecularly screened for Anaplasma and Ehrlichia using 16S rRNA gene primers,

First evaluation of an outbreak of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis in Southern Brazil using multiplex PCR.

Outbreaks of tick-borne disease cases in Santa Catarina, Brazil are known, but the presence of the pathogen DNA has never been determined. In this study, the first survey of Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina, and Babesia bovis DNA on blood samples of 33 cattle from an outbreak in Ponte Alta Municipality, Santa Catarina, Brazil, has been carried out. A multiplex PCR detected 54.5% of animals were co-infected with 2 or 3 parasites, while 24.2% were infected with only 1 species. The most prevalent agent was B. bigemina (63.6%) followed by A. marginale (60.6%). This is the first report of tick

Recent developments in elucidating tick vector relationships for anaplasmosis and equine piroplasmosis.

This brief review focuses first on several epidemiologically relevant aspects of anaplasmosis, including: (1) the role of male ticks as intrastadial, biological vectors of Anaplasma through interhost transfer; (2) the application of molecular diagnostic assays in assessing tick vector competence and evaluating the role of chronically infected carrier cattle as sources of Anaplasma marginale infection in vector ticks; (3) opportunities provided by a recently developed in vitro tick feeding system in quantitating studies of tick-hemoparasite-host interactions. Lastly, current knowledge of the st

Kansas beef bulls with chronic anaplasmosis demonstrate satisfactory breeding soundness outcomes at breeding soundness examination.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of chronic Anaplasma marginale infection in beef bulls from eastern Kansas and compare breeding soundness parameters between A marginale-infected and uninfected bulls. We hypothesized that bulls with chronic anaplasmosis would have inferior breeding soundness exam (BSE) outcomes as a result of persistent A marginale infection or the consequence of initial clinical disease compared to uninfected bulls. ANIMALS: 535 client-owned beef bulls from eastern Kansas undergoing routine BSE. METHODS: Complete BSEs were conducted by

Seroprevalence of tick-borne diseases in communal cattle reared on sweet and sour rangelands in a semi-arid area of South Africa.

A survey was conducted to determine the seroprevalence of tick-borne diseases (TBD) in Nguni and non-descript cattle on the sweet and sour communal rangelands across seasons. Body condition scores, bodyweights, packed cell volume (PCV) and antibodies to B. bovis, B. bigemina, Ehrlichiaruminatium and Anaplasma marginale were determined seasonally in 144 cattle raised on communal rangelands from August 2007 to April 2008. Approximately 45% of the cattle were seropositive for B. bovis, 46% for B. bigemina and 26% for A. marginale. All animals were seronegative for E. ruminantium. Nguni cattle had

Methods to improve the health of cattle in the tropics: conclusions and economic appraisal.

The results of the immune responses of immunised and chemoprophylactically treated calves to tick-borne (Boophilus microplus) challenge indicate that the system of immunisation was effective in protecting cattle against Anaplasma marginale, Babesia argentina (bovis), and B. bigemina. However, chemoprophylaxis was effective only against Babesia spp. but not against A. marginale. Both methods showed a substantial advantage over no control system when using native cattle breeds in a zone endemic for bovine anaplasmosis and babesiosis.
