Comparative anatomy of the arterial vascularization of the hippocampus in man and in experimental animals (cat, rabbit and sheep).

The studies were performed by the authors' injection method on 30 human brains and 80 animal ones. The cerebral arteries were injected with synthetic coloured latex and then prepared in an operating microscope. It was found that the main source of arterial supply of both the human and animal hippocampus is the posterior cerebral artery. However, this artery has different origins in the arterial circle of the brain in man, cat, rabbit and sheep. Comparative investigations have also proved that the hippocampal vascular system in man and animals is very similar. It is formed by branches of the po

How Well Do AI Chatbots Understand Abnormal Anatomy: A Comparative Study Using Congenital Anomalies and Tumor Cases.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots are becoming an efficient option to understand medical data and also help with clinical reasoning. There has been a recent progression in research of large language models and their ability to be used in the healthcare sector, such as radiological image analysis, and diagnostic support. There is however, little evidence supporting their ability to accurately understand abnormal anatomical conditions, such as congenital anomalies and tumor related changes in anatomy. To assess the diagnostic capabilities of three popular AI-powered chatbots (ChatGPT, Gemini

Rethinking thecodonty: the influence of two centuries of comparative dental anatomy on our understanding of tooth evolution.

'Thecodont' refers to teeth implanted in sockets within the jaw, a condition traditionally associated with living mammals and crocodylians, which also coincidentally have teeth attached by ligaments to the socket walls (gomphosis). For over a century, the bony periodontium of many other amniotes has been described as a single tissue, 'bone of attachment', causing confusion over dental tissue homology. The conventional definitions of 'thecodonty' exclude species with fused teeth ('ankylothecodonts'), implying a fundamental difference between mammals, crocodylians and most other vertebrates. How

Comparative Morphometric Anatomy of the Sphenoid Lateral Wall and Surgical Outcomes of Sphenoid Lateral Wall CSF Leak.

BACKGROUND: Sphenoid sinus lateral wall cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks are rare, with debated anatomical and physiological bases. We evaluated the role of pneumatization in surgical outcomes and compared patient morphometrics with cadaveric specimens. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 11 patients (2017-2025) with lateral sphenoid CSF leaks. The patient characteristics, site of leaks, type of repair done, postclamping opening pressure, surgical approach, reconstruction technique, flap choice, and recurrence were documented. Fine-cut computed tomography (CT) provided morphometrics [foramen

The comparative anatomy of the abdominal gastrointestinal tract of six species of African mole-rats (Rodentia, Bathyergidae).

The gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) of six species of African mole-rats (Bathyergidae) were compared. The aim was to provide a comprehensive anatomical comparison between the different species. The relative shape, length, and surface areas were taken into account to determine whether the GITs are phylogenetically constrained or exhibit anatomical adaptations in response to diets. In all six species the stomach was simple and glandular. With the exception of Heterocephalus glaber, the caecum was coiled in a flat spiral, the ascending colon was arranged in a loop of varying lengths, and a mucosal

Comparative integumentary fascial anatomy in mice, rats, and humans: homologies and implications for translational wound healing research.

In mice, native fascia and surrounding tissues have been shown to mobilize into wounds during healing, particularly during the proliferative phase. However, comparative descriptions of integumentary fascial anatomy across commonly used research species remain limited. This study aimed to characterize and compare the fascial layers of the integumentary system in mice, rats, and humans, identify structural homologies across species, and discuss the implications of these findings for wound healing research. Histological analysis of skin specimens from mice, rats, and humans was performed using mi

Outcomes of robot-assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty among pediatric patients with complex renal anatomy: A retrospective comparative study.

INTRODUCTION: Robot-assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty (RALP) has been increasingly utilized in the treatment of pediatric ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) with reported success rates of >95%. Complex renal anatomy can make some cases challenging to reconstruct. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate outcomes of children undergoing RALP with aberrant renal anatomy and compare it to those with simple renal anatomy. METHODS: An IRB approved prospective registry was queried to retrospectively identify all patients who underwent robotic pyeloplasty at our institution from 2012 to 2022. Patients undergoi

Comparative omasum anatomy in ruminants: Relationships with natural diet, digestive physiology, and general considerations on allometric investigations.

The omasum is the third forestomach compartment of pecoran ruminants. It is assumed that the re-absorption of fluid present in the forestomach digesta (that facilitates particle sorting, digestion, and harvest of microbes) is its main function, so that less diluted digesta is submitted to enzymatic digestion in the lower digestive tract. Here, we evaluate measures of omasum size (representing 84 ruminant species in the largest data set) against body mass and proxies of the natural diet (%grass) or forestomach physiology (fluid throughput), using phylogenetically controlled models. The origin o

On the consequences of childbirth: obstetrics/gynaecology, comparative anatomy and racial theories in 19th century France and Brazil.

The following paper is centred on an analysis of comparative studies of the human pelvis developed over the 19th century by mostly French natural scientists, physical anthropologists, students of the human anatomy and doctors engaged in the initial stages of the emerging fields of gynaecology and obstetrics. As this paper will argue, there was considerable overlap between these specialisations, producing a fundamentally masculine, Eurocentric and racialised knowledge that had an enormous impact in establishing racially informed gynaecological and obstetric practices. This paper argues that com

Using comparative anatomy in the axotomy model to identify distinct roles for microglia and astrocytes in synaptic stripping.

The synaptic terminals' withdrawal from the somata and proximal dendrites of injured motoneuron by the processes of glial cells following facial nerve axotomy has been the subject of research for many years. This phenomenon is referred to as synaptic stripping, which is assumed to help survival and regeneration of neurons via reduction of synaptic inputs. Because there is no disruption of the blood-brain barrier or infiltration of macrophages, the axotomy paradigm has the advantage of being able to selectively investigate the roles of resident glial cells in the brain. Although there have been

Narrative pedagogies in cranial nerve anatomy: Comparing mythological and sports-based approaches with traditional teaching.

This study used a mixed methods randomized controlled experimental design to evaluate the effectiveness of narrative-based versus traditional pedagogy in teaching cranial nerve anatomy to medicine students. Eighty-eight students who had completed a previous course on the nervous system were randomized into three groups: a control group receiving standard theoretical and practical anatomy instruction, a group using a mythological narrative ("Supper of Gods"), and a group using an animated sports-themed narrative ("Head Coach Hypoglossus"). Knowledge acquisition was assessed using pre- and post-

Comparative anatomy of the middle ear in some lizard species with comments on the evolutionary changes within Squamata.

The skeleton of the middle ear of lizards is composed of three anatomical elements: columella, extracolumella, and tympanic membrane, with some exceptions that show modifications of this anatomy. The main function of the middle ear is transforming sound waves into vibrations and transmitting these to the inner ear. Most middle ear studies mainly focus on its functional aspects, while few describe the anatomy in detail. In lizards, the morphology of the columella is highly conservative, while the extracolumella shows variation in its presence/absence, size, and the number of processes present o

Comparative anatomy of the subsynovial connective tissue in the carpal tunnel of the rat, rabbit, dog, baboon, and human.

The tenosynovium in the human carpal tunnel is connected to the flexor tendons and the median nerve by the subsynovial connective tissue (SSCT). The most common histological finding in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), a compression neuropathy of the median nerve, is noninflammatory fibrosis of the SSCT. The relationship, if any, between the fibrosis and nerve pathology is unknown, although some have speculated that a change in the SSCT volume or stiffness might be the source of the compression. Yet, while animal models have been used to study the physiology of nerve compression, so far none have

Comparative retrospective outcomes of endoscopic ultrasound-guided gastroenterostomy in patients with gastric outlet obstruction and post-surgical anatomy.

BACKGROUND: Data on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided gastroenterostomy (EUS-GE) are mainly derived from patients with naïve anatomy. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of EUS-GE in patients with post-surgical anatomy and compare these findings with those from a cohort of patients with naïve anatomy. METHODS: A retrospective tertiary center analysis was performed of consecutive EUS-GE procedures. The wireless-EUS-GE-simplified technique (WEST) was employed for EUS-GE. Clinical success was defined as achieving a postprocedural gastric outlet obstruction scoring system score of ≥2. RES

Students' Learning Outcomes in a Virtual Microscopic Online and Face-to-Face Anatomy Course: Cross-Over Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Since 2021, the histology of organs in the microscopic anatomy course at the Department of Anatomy II of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich has been held as a hybrid course using a 3D virtual microscopy system. Evidence comparing synchronous online versus face-to-face instruction using an advanced 3D virtual slide system remains limited. In particular, it is unclear whether learning outcomes are equivalent across instructional modes, and whether individual student characteristics influence learning outcomes under these conditions. Musculoskeletal architecture of the shoulder: A comparative anatomy study in bats and mice informing human rotator cuff function.

Overhead motion in humans often leads to shoulder injuries, a consequence of the evolutionary trade-off in glenohumeral joint anatomy that balances stability with mobility. Bats consistently engage in overhead motion during flight, subjecting their shoulders to substantial loading throughout their relatively long lifespan. Remarkably, despite the demands placed on a bat's shoulder, instability and rotator cuff tears, which could be fatal to bats in short order, are not observed in nature. We were thus inspired to study functional adaptations in the shoulders of bats that enable this overhead m
