Anatomic considerations, nomenclature, and advanced cross-sectional imaging techniques for visualization of the cranial nerve segments by MR imaging.

Various methods of cross-sectional imaging are used for visualization of the cranial nerves, relying heavily on MR imaging. The success of the MR imaging sequences for visualization of cranial nerves depends on their anatomic context at the point of evaluation. The heterogeneity of opinion regarding optimal evaluation of the cranial nerves is partly a function of the complexity of cranial nerve anatomy. A variety of approaches are advocated and variations in equipment and terminology cloud the field. This article proposes a segmental classification and corresponding nomenclature for imaging ev

[Anatomy of the skull base and the cranial nerves in slice imaging].

Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are suitable methods for examination of the skull base. Whereas CT is used to evaluate mainly bone destruction e.g. for planning surgical therapy, MRI is used to show pathologies in the soft tissue and bone invasion. High resolution and thin slice thickness are indispensible for both modalities of skull base imaging. Detailed anatomical knowledge is necessary even for correct planning of the examination procedures. This knowledge is a requirement to be able to recognize and interpret pathologies. MRI is the method of choice for exam

Human cancellous bone from T12-L1 vertebrae has unique microstructural and trabecular shear stress properties.

Increase of trabecular stress variability with loss of bone mass has been implicated as a mechanism for increased cancellous bone fragility with age and disease. In the current study, a previous observation that trabecular shear stress estimates vary along the human spine such that the cancellous tissue from the thoracic 12 (T12)-lumbar 1 (L1) junction experiences the highest trabecular stresses for a given load was tested as a formal hypothesis using multiple human spines. Thoracic 4, T5, T7, T9, T10, T12, L1, L2, L4 and L5 vertebrae from 10 human cadaver spines were examined. One specimen in

Primary retroperitoneal masses: what is the differential diagnosis?

Primary retroperitoneal masses include a diverse, and often rare, group of neoplastic and non-neoplastic entities that arise within the retroperitoneum but do not originate from any retroperitoneal organ. Their overlapping appearances on cross-sectional imaging may pose a diagnostic challenge to the radiologist; familiarity with characteristic imaging features, together with relevant clinical information, helps to narrow the differential diagnosis. In this article, a systematic approach to identifying and classifying primary retroperitoneal masses is described. The normal anatomy of the retrop

An innovative method for teaching anatomy in the predoctoral dental curriculum.

New methods of teaching gross anatomy are being evaluated as medical and dental schools attempt to find time in their curricula for new content without sacrificing essential anatomical knowledge. This article reports on an innovative method of teaching anatomy at New York University College of Dentistry. In 2005, the instructors completely replaced the dissection of wet cadavers with the study of dissected and sliced plastinated specimens. The shift from cadaver dissection to the study of plastinated specimens was accompanied by other changes in the anatomy course: students study in small, con

Morphometric evaluation of the sphenopalatine foramen for endonasal surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Ligation of the sphenopalatine artery is used to treat severe nasal haemorrhage. Despite the high rates of success reported, errors and complications may occur in locating the sphenopalatine foramen (SPF) through which the vasculonervous structures penetrate the nasal cavity. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the numerical variation of the SPF, its relation to the ethmoid bone crista of the palatine bone in the lateral nasal wall, its distance from the anterior nasal spine and the angle between this distance and the anterior nasal floor. DESIGN: Anatomical study.

CT and MR anatomy of the larynx and hypopharynx.

Imaging of the larynx and hypopharynx is frequently requested to assess the extent of neoplasms beyond the field of view of endoscopic evaluation. The combination of optical and cross-sectional imaging allows tumors to be classified according to AJCC/UICC guidelines. A thorough understanding of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal anatomy is crucial to guide the radiological eye along the possible pathways of the spread of diseases and to guide differential diagnoses. Computed tomography (CT) has been the first cross-sectional imaging technique used to evaluate the larynx and hypopharynx; its spatial

A hybrid radiography/MRI system for combining hysterosalpingography and MRI in infertility patients: initial experience.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the feasibility of a prototype hybrid radiography/MRI system in evaluating infertility patients. Pelvic MRI was followed by hysterosalpingography (HSG) without moving the patient. This system allowed evaluation of tubal patency and cross-sectional imaging with one examination. CONCLUSION: Our hybrid radiography/MRI system provided good-quality HSG and MR images. We were able to assess tubal anatomy and patency and uterine anatomy and to detect pelvic abnormalities, including fibroids and adenomyosis. Furthermore, MR images and radiographs were superimposed to clarify H

Head of the Syrian Hamster (Mesocricetus auratus): Planar Anatomy with Correlative Micro-Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Syrian hamsters (SHs) are widely used in research and as pets. However, their head anatomy has not yet been evaluated using sectional anatomy and imaging despite their unique features, which are important for studying ischemia-reperfusion injury, cancer, oral tumors, and common stomatognathic and ocular conditions. This study was conducted to correlate the planar anatomy of the heads of eight healthy male and female SHs with micro-CT and MRI images to establish a descriptive, imaging-based anatomical reference. Clinically important head structures observed in transverse, dorsal, and sagittal a

Plastinated sectional anatomy applied in CT and MRI studies of the body of the crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous).

The crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) is a wild canid with a wide geographic distribution and a high propensity for roadkill in Brazil. Accurate diagnosis and appropriate clinical-surgical management require in-depth anatomical knowledge of the species, which is still limited for C. thous. This study aimed to correlate the sectional anatomy of C. thous through plastination, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) following the anatomical principle of metamerism to build the vertebrate body. Four animals underwent CT and MRI scans, and the images were stored in DICOM form

Ulnar nerve dimensions at entrapment sites in cadavers.

PURPOSE: The ulnar nerve might undergo compression due to traumatic or non-traumatic pathological conditions or altered anatomy within the extent of the distal arm to the proximal hand, leading to ulnar neuropathy. There are certain anatomical sites where the increased ulnar nerve cross-sectional area (CSA) values indicate probable compression and can be diagnosed by the high-resolution Ultrasonography (USG) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in symptomatic patients. The ulnar nerve CSA varies across the population, and there is limited data available for the Indian population. Hence, we aime

Could mastication modify the shape of the orbit? A scannographic study in humans.

PURPOSE: Since prehistory, changes of the facial skeleton have been related to the modification of diet. More recent studies have shown changes in the morphology of the mandible and maxilla due to variations of strain during mastication. The temporal muscle (TM) is a strong masticatory muscle, with its insertions extending through the temporal fossa. Our objective is to observe the relations between the TM and the lateral orbital wall (LOW) which could indicate an influence of mastication on the shape of the LOW. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study using 100 CT scans. The length of th

Tomosynthesis: A new radiologic technique for rapid diagnosis of scaphoid fractures.

Scaphoid fractures constitute 71% of all carpal bone fractures.1 Early diagnosis and treatment has significant bearing on fracture union rates and better clinical outcomes. While displaced fractures can be readily seen on plain radiograph, undisplaced fractures can require advanced imaging modalities to confirm that diagnosis. Advanced imaging such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerised tomography (CT) and bone scintigraphy are routinely used for the diagnosis of scaphoid fractures but require significant radiation exposure, increased cost and can be difficult to access.2 Tomosynthe
