Analysis of the Risk Factors for the Onset of Postoperative Hypothermia in the Postanesthesia Care Unit.

PURPOSE: Recent studies on hypothermia typically focused on a single anesthesia method or a particular surgical procedure. Although there are multiple risk factors leading to hypothermia, such as the use of cold solutions or nonhumidified and nonheated anesthetic gases, few studies have reported the incidence of postoperative hypothermia among patients in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU). DESIGN: This is a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent surgery and were admitted to the PACU immediately after surgery at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital, College of Medicine, Zhejiang Universi

[Four patients with mucormycosis in a postoperative recovery unit].

Mucormycosis, a rare opportunistic infection caused by fungi belonging to the Mucorales order, is a potentially fatal disease. We describe 4 patients with mucormycosis. Risk factors (chronic renal insufficiency and chronic lung disease treated with corticosteroids) were identified for 2 of the patients who did not respond favorably to appropriate surgical and medical treatment. Of the 2 remaining patients, only the one with milder disease responded to treatment. The prognosis for this opportunistic infection, whose low incidence has increased in postoperative intensive care units, is very poor

[Anesthesiological concepts in fast-track arthroplasty].

Whereas only a few years ago the only expectation of skilful anesthesia was an undisturbed execution of surgical procedures, today this has changed to a perioperative responsibility in which all physicians involved in the treatment process try to optimize the existing circumstances and risks of the patient before, during and after surgery. Thus, the tasks for the anesthesiologist have been mainly extended to a rapid recovery strategy with as few side effects as possible, such as nausea and vomiting or postoperative cognitive deficits (POCD). The establishment of evident structures and the intr

Opioid-free anesthesia improves postoperative recovery quality of small and medium-sized surgery: a prospective, randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Opioid anesthesia (OA) is currently the predominant anesthetic method. However, its associated side effects, such as nausea and vomiting, coupled with the principle of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), have spurred the adoption of opioid-free anesthesia (OFA) in select surgical procedures. For small and medium-sized operations, ERAS is particularly important. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of OFA, utilizing esketamine in combination with dexmedetomidine and sevoflurane, on postoperative recovery quality following small and medium-sized surgical interventi

Cough reflex sensitivity after elective Caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia and after vaginal delivery.

BACKGROUND: In pregnancy, airway oedema and heartburn may increase cough sensitivity, whereas spinal anaesthesia (SA) with local anaesthetics and opiates may decrease it. Decreased cough sensitivity increases the risk for pneumonia or retained secretions. The aim of this study was to determine whether cough sensitivity is increased in pregnant patients and if it is decreased after planned Caesarean section (CS) under SA. METHODS: Twenty-seven non-pregnant volunteers, 27 patients after vaginal delivery (VD group), and 28 patients after CS under SA (CS group) were studied. For SA, hyperbaric bu

The significance of different intervertebral spaces in combined spinal epidural anesthesia in cesarean section.

BACKGROUND: The number of cesarean sections performed is increasing every year, and obstetric anesthesia is of great interest to physicians and research scholars because of its specificity, high risk, and high complication rate. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of combined spinal epidural anesthesia (CSEA) with different intervertebral spaces during cesarean section on anesthesia effect, anesthesia onset time, anesthesia recovery time, maternal adverse reactions, and neonates. METHODS: Ninety-two women who underwent cesarean section in our hospital from September 2022 to February 2023 w

Quality of recovery after arthroscopic meniscectomy with remimazolam or propofol anesthesia: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Anesthetic technique may influence postoperative quality of recovery (QoR). Remimazolam may offer hemodynamic stability and favorable early recovery characteristics, but its effect on patient-reported QoR compared with propofol remains unclear. This is particularly relevant in minor orthopedic surgery, where QoR is a principal outcome. This randomized controlled trial compared postoperative QoR between propofol-based and remimazolam-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) using the QoR-40 questionnaire. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty adult patients undergoing elective arthroscopi

Evaluation of Quality of Recovery With Quality of Recovery-15 Score After Closed-Loop Anesthesia Delivery System-Guided Propofol Versus Desflurane General Anesthesia in Patients Undergoing Transabdominal Robotic Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Study.

BACKGROUND: Robotic technique of surgery allows surgeons to perform complex procedures in difficult-to-access areas of the abdominal/pelvic cavity (eg, radical prostatectomy and radical hysterectomy) with improved access and precision approach. At the same time, automated techniques efficiently deliver propofol total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) with lower anesthetic consumption. As both above are likely to bring benefit to the patients, it is imperative to explore their effect on postanesthesia recovery. Quality of Recovery-15 (QoR-15) is a comprehensive patient-reported measure of the quali

Comparison of recovery in pediatric patients: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: The recovery after general anesthesia is influenced by the choice of inhalational agent. Stimulations might make patient's agitate. However, the recovery using no touch technique might be safer. In this study, we compared the recovery time, awakening end-tidal concentration, and respiratory complications among inhalational anesthetics in pediatric patients using no touch technique, retrospectively. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The subjects were pediatric patients aged 3 months to 11 years under general anesthesia using sevoflurane, isoflurane, or desflurane. Background, awakening end-tida

Ventilation with isoflurane in the Triservice anaesthetic apparatus: a comparison with halothane and trichlorethylene.

Recovery from anaesthesia using the Triservice anaesthetic apparatus with either isoflurane alone or halothane and trichlorethylene, was assessed by measurement of reaction time. There was no statistically significant improvement in recovery between patients who received low concentrations of isoflurane and those who received halothane and trichlorethylene. The mean profiles of systolic pressure and heart rate were significantly greater in the isoflurane group (P less than 0.05) than in the halothane/trichlorethylene group. Cardiovascular stability was maintained into the recovery period. The

The Effect of Electroencephalographic Trajectory During Anesthesia Emergence on the Indices Monitoring the Hypnotic Component.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative neurocognitive disorders (PNDs) are frequent and serious complications that cause an enormous social and economic burden. A previous study demonstrated that certain electroencephalographic (EEG) patterns during emergence from general anesthesia are associated with a higher risk for PND. Compared to patients demonstrating the most favorable trajectory ( Traj Ref : delta-dominant slow-wave anesthesia (ddSWA)→spindle-dominant SWA (sdSWA)→non-SWA (nSWA)→wake), patients presenting Traj Abrupt (ddSWA→wake) had 4-fold increased odds to develop PND and patients with Traj High

Evaluation of the relationship between the Obstetric Comorbidity Index (Ob-CMI) and the Obstetric Quality Of Recovery Score (ObsQoR-11): a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Caesarean delivery is a common surgical procedure associated with significant maternal morbidity and mortality. Delayed postoperative recovery is a critical concern influenced by various factors. This study evaluates whether the Obstetric Comorbidity Index (OB-CMI) predicts postoperative recovery quality, hypothesizing a correlation with the Obstetric Quality of Recovery score (ObsQoR-11). METHODS: In our prospective observational study, patients' demographic data, medical history, ASA score, gravida, parity, gestational age, caesarean delivery category and indication if emergency
