Driving anger and its relationships with type A behavior patterns and trait anger: Differences between professional and non-professional drivers.

The present study examined the types of situations that caused Chinese professional and non-professional drivers to become angry and investigated the differences in driving-elicited anger, considering the influences of type A behavior pattern and trait anger between the two groups. The 20-item revised Driving Anger Scale (DAS) was used to assess a sample of 232 drivers (57% professional, 43% non-professional). The non-professional drivers reported significantly higher levels of anger than the professional drivers on the overall Driving Anger Scale (DAS) and the traffic obstructions and discour

Bulimia symptoms and anger and aggression among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has indicated that anger and aggression may be elevated in adolescents with a bulimia nervosa (BN) diagnosis. However, as yet, little is known about whether bulimia symptoms are linked to anger and aggression in adolescents in the general population. To address this deficit this study aimed to explore the associations between a clinical level of bulimia symptoms (CLBS) and anger, anger rumination and aggression in community-based adolescents, and determine whether gender is important in this context. METHODS: This study was conducted on a representative sample of

Subjective anger and overt aggression in psychiatric outpatients.

BACKGROUND: The attention given to anger and aggression in psychiatric patients pales in comparison to the attention given to depression and anxiety. Most studies have focused on a limited number of psychiatric disorders, and results have been inconsistent. The present report from the Rhode Island Methods to Improve Diagnostic Assessment and Services (MIDAS) project sought to replicate and extend prior findings examining which psychiatric disorders and demographic characteristics were independently associated with elevated levels of anger and aggression. METHOD: 3800 individuals presenting to

Genome-wide association study of proneness to anger.

BACKGROUND: Community samples suggest that approximately 1 in 20 children and adults exhibit clinically significant anger, hostility, and aggression. Individuals with dysregulated emotional control have a greater lifetime burden of psychiatric morbidity, severe impairment in role functioning, and premature mortality due to cardiovascular disease. METHODS: With publically available data secured from dbGaP, we conducted a genome-wide association study of proneness to anger using the Spielberger State-Trait Anger Scale in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study (n = 8,747). RESULTS

Life events, entrapments and arrested anger in depression.

OBJECTIVES: A recent, evolution derived theory of depression has suggested that aroused but arrested defences of fight (arrested anger) and flight (entrapments) may be important components of depression. This study therefore set out to explore unexpressed anger and entrapment in depression. The focus was on the nature of severe life events and difficulties, the time course of arrested defences, fantasies of escaping, fantasies of expressing anger, and reasons for not acting on emotions/behaviours. METHODS: Fifty diagnosed depressed people, being treated for depression, were interviewed using

Understanding women's anger: a description of relational patterns.

Sixty women's narratives about their anger were coded for elements of anger expression. Their decisions regarding how and where to express anger are most strongly influenced by the anticipated reactions of others. Six patterns of bringing anger into relationships or keeping it out were identified. Women bring anger into relationship: (1) positively and directly, with the goal of removing barriers to relationship; (2) aggressively, with the goal of hurting another; and (3) indirectly, through disguising anger with the goal of remaining safe from interpersonal consequences, using strategies of (

Hostility and anger measures in coronary heart disease.

Recent research addressing the link between psychological factors and risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) has focused on the areas of hostility and anger and produced sometimes contradictory results. This study makes use of four questionnaire measures of hostility and anger, which were administered to matched groups with and without CHD. Quicker experiences of anger with greater verbal expression best predicted CHD. The difficulties in teasing out the relative contributions of emotional expression, experience and personality using available questionnaires are discussed.

Anger and other psychological factors in coronary atherosclerosis.

This study of 519 coronary angiography patients failed to replicate our earlier findings in 90 angiography patients (Tennant & Langeluddecke, 1985) which showed that trait tension, trait anxiety and suppression of anger were correlates of atherosclerosis. In the present study a variety of psychological measures, including state and trait anxiety, tension, anger, locus of control and suppression of anger, depression and anxiety, showed no significant association with coronary atherosclerosis as assessed by coronary angiography.

Pain, Anger, and Rumination in Fibromyalgia: A Vicious Cycle?

Background/Objectives: Fibromyalgia is a debilitating syndrome characterized by persistent pain. Emerging evidence highlights the role of emotional and cognitive processes in modulating pain experience. Anger, for example, can influence pain and patients' adjustment to the disease. Studies showed that metacognitions and anger rumination can worsen state anger, thereby increasing perceived pain intensity. The present study aims to investigate the presence of a relationship between pain, dysfunctional metacognitions, anger rumination, and state anger. Methods: The study included 446 participants

Neuronal signatures of anger and fear in patients with psychosis.

The present study investigated the functional neuroanatomy in response to sentence stimuli related to anger-provoking situations and fear of negative evaluation in patients with psychosis. The tasks consisted of four active conditions, Self-Anger (SA), Self-Fear, Other-Anger (OA), and Other-Fear (OF), and two neutral conditions, Neutral-Anger (NA) and Neutral-Fear (NF). Several relevant clinical measures were obtained. Under all contrasts, significantly higher activation in the left inferior parietal gyrus or superior parietal gyrus and the left middle occipital gyrus or superior occipital gyr

Psychiatric disorders and anger in patients with controlled acromegaly.

BACKGROUND: Acromegaly (ACRO) is a chronic rare disease caused by a pathological increase in growth hormone (GH) secretion. In ACRO an increased prevalence of psychiatric disorders has been demonstrated, in particular depressive disorders, associated to a significant deterioration of the quality of life, independently from disease control. In addition, anger feelings, often detected in subjects affected by chronic disease, have not yet been investigated, in pituitary patients. Aim of the study was to evaluate in ACRO patients with a controlled disease, compared to patients suffering for non-fu

Depressive symptoms and anger and aggression in Russian adolescents.

Research among adolescents exploring the association between depressive symptoms and aggression has produced inconsistent findings. This study investigated the prevalence of clinically significant (current major depressive episode) and subthreshold depressive symptoms in a general population sample of adolescents from Northern Russia and explored their association with aggression and anger, while controlling for comorbid mental health problems. The sample consisted of 2600 participants, aged 13-17 years (59.5% female; 95.7% ethnic Russian). Symptoms of a current major depressive episode, types

Anger frequency and risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

AIMS: Anger may increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) but previous findings are inconclusive and large prospective studies are needed. We investigated whether frequency of strong anger is associated with the incidence of specific CVDs and CVD mortality, and if sex, age, and cardiometabolic risk factors modify these associations. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used data from a population-based cohort of 47 077 Swedish adults (56-94 years of age) who completed questionnaires regarding their experience of anger, lifestyle habits, and health characteristics. Participants were followed for

Neural correlates of anger expression in patients with PTSD.

Anger is a common and debilitating symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although studies have identified brain circuits underlying anger experience and expression in healthy individuals, how these circuits interact with trauma remains unclear. Here, we performed the first study examining the neural correlates of anger in patients with PTSD. Using a data-driven approach with resting-state fMRI, we identified two prefrontal regions whose overall functional connectivity was inversely associated with anger: the left anterior middle frontal gyrus (aMFG) and the right orbitofrontal cort

Anger, hostility, and hospitalizations in patients with heart failure.

OBJECTIVE: Heart failure patients have a high hospitalization rate, and anger and hostility are associated with coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality. Using structural equation modeling, this prospective study assessed the predictive validity of anger and hostility traits for cardiovascular and all-cause rehospitalizations in patients with heart failure. METHOD: 146 heart failure patients were administered the STAXI and Cook-Medley Hostility Inventory to measure anger, hostility, and their component traits. Hospitalizations were recorded for up to 3 years following baseline. Causes o

Effect of regulating anger and sadness on decision-making.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of reappraisal, acceptance, and rumination for regulating anger and sadness on decision-making. Participants (N = 165) were asked to recall two autobiographical events in which they felt intense anger and sadness, respectively. Participants were then instructed to reappraise, accept, ruminate, or not use any strategies to regulate their feelings of anger and sadness. Following this manipulation, risk aversion, and decision-making strategies were measured using a computer-based measure of risk-taking and a simulated real-life decision-

Dimensions of driving anger and their relationships with aberrant driving.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between driving anger and aberrant driving behaviours. An internet-based questionnaire survey was administered to a sample of Chinese drivers, with driving anger measured by a 14-item short Driving Anger Scale (DAS) and the aberrant driving behaviours measured by a 23-item Driver Behaviour Questionnaire (DBQ). The results of Confirmatory Factor Analysis demonstrated that the three-factor model (hostile gesture, arrival-blocking and safety-blocking) of the DAS fitted the driving anger data well. The Exploratory Factor Analysis on DBQ

Anger in the trajectory of healing from childhood maltreatment.

When a girl is abused during childhood, she may not experience anger, only helplessness or numbness. Only later may the emotion of anger surface. Little is known about anger cognitions or behaviors as they occur across the years of the healing trajectory from childhood maltreatment. Data for the present secondary analysis were derived from a large narrative study of women thriving in adulthood despite childhood abuse. The purpose of this analysis was to examine the phenomenon of anger and its role in the recovery process of 6 midlife women. The 6 cases were purposefully selected because their
