This is a case study of tuberous sclerosis with unusually large facial angiofibromas. The patient had other intense skin manifestations. Histological findings in the angiofibroma included large and glial-appearing cells specific for this disease. Karyotype analysis revealed a translocation of chromosome (12q-, 15q+).

The angiofibroma of tuberous sclerosis is associated with a proliferation of dermal spindle cells that have been considered to be fibroblasts on the basis of a variety of techniques, although some cells have a glial appearance. This study of six angiofibromas demonstrated an increase in S100-positive, peanut agglutinin-negative spindle cells in the dermis in addition to increased numbers of epidermal melanocytes. The second major spindle cell population in the dermis proved to be dermal dendrocytes based on their expression of factor XIIIa. The number of these cells decreases in older patients

This article reviews arterial embolization of epistaxis and juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas. A protocol for the complete and rapid exploration of epistaxis is suggested that is based upon which arteries providing blood to the nasal fossa may be responsible for the bleeding and the most optimal way for their demonstration and evaluation. The relevant anatomy of the major arteries, their branches, and important anastomoses are described. The goals of embolization are to control severe or recurrent epistaxis, prevent recurrence if possible, and avoid occlusion of any vessels not responsible

Malignant melanoma rarely develops in the paranasal sinuses, and generally has a poor prognosis. However, mucosal melanoma can masquerade both clinically and histopathologically as a benign lesion, rendering accurate early diagnosis difficult. On the other hand, angiofibroma, a benign tumor, is more easily diagnosed than a mucosal melanoma, because the former exhibits specific histopathological features. No cases of concurrent angiofibroma and mucosal melanoma have been reported to date. We describe such a case below.

Cellular Angiofibroma (CA) represents a quite recently described mesenchymal tumour that occurs in both genders, in particular in the vulvo-vaginal region in women and in the inguino-scrotal area in men. The first description of this tumour dates from Nucci et al. article in 1997; since then, the literature reports different reviews and case report of this tumour in both genders, but no article specifically addressing CA treatment and follow-up in women. In this review we collected all 79 published female CA cases, analyzing the clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical features of the tu

Nasopharyngeal angiofibromas are benign and vascular neoplasms, which originate characteristically in the posterior lateral wall of the nasopharynx. They account for less than 0.5% of all head and neck tumours. Although angiofibromas extend beyond the nasopharynx usually, they rarely originate outside the nasopharynx. Reports of primary extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas have appeared sporadically in the literature. The maxillary sinus is the most common site involved, while the inferior turbinate represents an extremely rare localization. We report a case of angiofibroma which arising from the

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis is an autosomal dominant disorder with hamartomas in multiple organ systems. Facial angiofibromas (AF) are a common cutaneous manifestation of tuberous sclerosis. They may lead to significant cosmetic and psychological problems. Many treatment modalities have been used with variable satisfaction. Fractional photothermolysis (FP) is a novel concept of laser therapy, which induces non-contiguous microscopic thermal injury.
OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy and side effects of Nd:YAG laser treatment for facial AF by using spot-like irradia

Tuberous sclerosis complex is an autosomal dominant disorder that can cause nonmalignant hamartomas in any organ. Angiofibromas are the most disturbing marker of the disease because they are conspicuously present on the face. We report the case of a 15-year-old girl affected by tuberous sclerosis, whose facial angiofibromas were satisfactorily treated by a green light vascular laser (532 nm).

Facial angiofibromas are hamartomatous growths that are closely associated with tuberous sclerosis complex and, in fact, they constitute one of the main diagnostic criteria for that disease. These lesions composed of blood vessels and fibrous tissue appear on the face at an early age. Since they have important physical and psychological repercussions for patients, several treatment options have been used to remove them or improve their appearance. However, the lack of treatment guidelines prevents us from developing a common protocol for patients with this condition. The present article aims t

OBJECT: Craniofacial approaches provide excellent exposure to lesions in the anterior and middle cranial fossae. The authors review their experience with craniofacial approaches for resection of large juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas.
METHODS: Between 1992 and 2009, 22 patients (all male, mean age 15 years, range 9-27 years) underwent 30 procedures. These cases were reviewed retrospectively.
RESULTS: Gross-total resection of 17 (77%) of the 22 lesions was achieved. The average duration of hospitalization was 8.2 days (range 3-20 days). The rate of recurrence and/or progression was 4 (18

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a higher total energy protocol for diode laser transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (TSCP) for the treatment of primary glaucoma in dogs.
PROCEDURES: Diode laser TSCP was performed on 24 eyes of 18 dogs (six dogs were treated bilaterally). A glaucoma probe with a spot size of 600 microns was applied in 25 sites 3-4 mm posterior to the limbus for dogs. A power of 1000 milliwatts (mW) for a duration of 5000 milliseconds (ms) to deliver an average 125 J of energy per eye, which is higher energy delivery than previously reported for the diode laser for the treatment of canine

In this study, our four patients with angiofibroma with various atypical features are presented. Related literature is reviewed and criteria for atypicality are proposed. 14 patients, diagnosed and treated for angiofibroma in the Otorhinolaryngology Department of Faculty of Medicine in Uludag University between January 1992 and December 2003, have been evaluated. The files of the patients were examined and four patients with atypical characteristics have been included in the study. Angiofibromas presenting with at least one of the following criteria such as origin or location other than nasoph

Tuberous sclerosis is an inherited syndrome with mental retardation, epilepsy, and acne rosacea being the classic triad of manifestations. The facial skin problems can present a cosmetic deformity or, as in the three patients presented here, can produce difficulties with hygiene and nasal breathing. Various approaches to treatment have been described over the last century, but no long-term results have been presented. Because of the full-thickness skin involvement, complete removal is not practical, and treatment should be directed toward acceptable long-term results with minimal surgical morb

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare, benign but aggressive tumour of the nasopharynx. It occurs primarily in male adolescents. The usual presentation is either nasal obstruction or epistaxis. We present a case with complete nasal obstruction of short duration. The management is discussed with reference to the literature. Because this tumour tends to occur in men in their second decade it is an important disease to consider in soldiers.

Introduction: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystem neurocutaneous disorder. Angiofibromas (AF), fibrous plaques, and hypopigmented macules are the major skin findings in TSC. Topical sirolimus reduces the volume and redness of AF and other skin findings. However, the efficacy of early intervention and long-term treatment remains to be clarified. We investigated the efficacy of sirolimus gel for AF in children with TSC. Methods: We recruited nine children (five boys; four girls) with TSC and AF. We used 0.2% sirolimus gel over 6 months. We reviewed each patient's medical records an

INTRODUCTION: Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (NA) characteristically affects adolescent men. Although benign, these tumors can cause local destruction and surgical resection is warranted.
OBJECTIVE: We present a case of a 62-year-old man with nasal congestion and epistaxis, found to be a right NA on pathology. We also present a review of the available NA staging systems.
FINDINGS: In this case of NA, imaging revealed an aggressive, hypervascular mass in the nasal cavity with involvement of the middle cranial fossa and cavernous sinus. The patient underwent complete endoscopic surgical resection

Giant cell angiofibroma (GCA) is a recently reported rare soft-tissue tumor that can develop in various sites including orbit. Orbital GCAs were mainly located in the eyelid or extraconal regions such as lacrimal gland and conjunctiva. We report an atypical case of a GCA arising in the intraconal area of the orbit in a 65-year-old male patient. The tumor was excised in total by lateral orbitotomy. Histological and immunohistochemical features were consistent with the diagnosis of GCA. No recurrence was observed during the follow-up of over 2 years. GCA is a rare tumor that should be considered

BACKGROUND: Dental pulp inflammation is a very complex process due to its situation in low compliance (confined environment) surrounded by mineralized dentin. Mast cells are one of the mediators of inflammation. Immunohistochemical localization of mast cells by anti-tryptase antibodies in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded sections has been shown to be highly specific. The aim of the present study is to quantify the mast cells in inflamed and noninflamed human pulp tissue using immunohistochemical analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Immunohistochemical localization of mast cells by anti-tryptase a
