Subclinical Angioid Streaks with Pseudodrusen: A New Phenotype of Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

INTRODUCTION: To describe subclinical angioid streaks (AS) as a frequent, peculiar age-related macular degeneration (AMD) phenotype, comparing features of eyes with subclinical AS with those of eyes with AMD without AS. METHODS: This was a retrospective, observational study. Among a patient cohort with AMD, we selected patients without known causes for AS whose eyes showed signs of angioid streaks (AS) on structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) but not on fundus examination. Selected OCT features of AS were Bruch's membrane (BM) breaks and large BM dehiscences. RESULTS: Among 543 eyes

Treat-and-Extend Faricimab for Macular Neovascularization in Angioid Streaks: A Report of Two Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Angioid streaks (AS) are a rare retinal disorder that leads to progressive vision loss, particularly when complicated by macular neovascularization (MNV). Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents are the first-line treatment for MNV with AS; however, the optimal treatment strategy remains controversial. Herein, we present two cases of type 2 MNV secondary to AS treated with intravitreal faricimab (IVF), the first bispecific antibody, using a treat-and-extend (T&E) protocol over a 1-year follow-up. CASE PRESENTATIONS: Case 1: A 63-year-old male patient achieved dry macula a

Choroidal neovascularization secondary to angioid streaks in a patient with pseudoxanthoma elasticum: case report.

OBJECTIVE: Present the diagnosis and therapeutic approach in a patient with pseudoxanthoma elasticum and ocular involvement. CASE REPORT: A 46-year-old patient presented for progressive loss of vision and metamorphopsias in the left eye. The ophthalmological examination showed angioid streaks and secondary choroidal neovascularization. The dermatologist performed an incisional biopsy of a skin area in the right axilla that showed white-yellow, discrete streaks. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of pseudoxanthoma elasticum. It was decided to start intravitreal injections wi

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum: biopsy of clinically normal skin in the investigation of patients with angioid streaks.

BACKGROUND: Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a genetic disorder characterized by fragmentation and calcification of elastic fibres with resultant pathological changes in the dermis, Bruch's membrane and blood vessels. Defects in Bruch's membrane produce angioid streaks on the retina but this appearance is not pathognomonic of PXE. Biopsy of clinically normal skin or scar tissue in patients with angioid streaks may show the histological features of PXE. OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that biopsy of clinically normal skin is a useful investigation in patients with angioid streaks. METHODS

VITELLIFORM LESIONS ASSOCIATED WITH ANGIOID STREAKS: Long-Term Follow-Up of a Rarely Described Phenotype.

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical and multimodal imaging features, and long-term outcomes, of acquired vitelliform lesions (AVLs) in angioid streaks (AS). METHODS: Retrospective case series including 14 patients (23 eyes) with AS-related AVLs. Clinical data, color fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT), en face OCT, and OCT angiography were evaluated at baseline and final visits. Snellen visual acuity (VA), lesion dimensions, subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), and outer retinal integrity were recorded. RESULTS: AS were secondary to

Optic disc drusen, angioid streaks, and mottled fundus in various combinations in a Sicilian family.

BACKGROUND: We describe a Sicilian family in which optic disc drusen, angioid streaks, and mottled fundus--without dermatological signs of pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE)--are present in various combinations and segregate as an autosomal dominant trait. Since these ocular manifestations can be part of the clinical signs of PXE, we examined the possible involvement of a mutation in the ABCC6 gene, which is known to be responsible for PXE. METHODS: Linkage analysis was performed with both intragenic and flanking markers. We used marker D16B9722 and a single-nucleotide polymorphism located in exo

Periumbilical pseudoxanthoma elasticum associated with chronic renal failure and angioid streaks--apparent regression with hemodialysis.

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a heritable connective tissue disease involving progressive fragmentation and dystrophic calcification of elastic fibers. Periumbilical disease as the exclusive site of cutaneous involvement is most commonly seen in the rare entity termed periumbilical perforating pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PPPXE). Patients with this disorder are generally obese, middle aged, multiparous black women with hypertension. The cutaneous lesions are well-demarcated, hyperpigmented, periumbilical plaques with keratotic papules on the periphery. Extracutaneous manifestations have rarel
