This is a literature review for management of angiomyolipoma (AML), lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and tuberous sclerosis (TS) during pregnancy, prompted by a case of a 23-year-old woman who presented with generalised itching at 31 weeks' gestation and was found to have a large vascular retroperitoneal mass in the lower pole of the left kidney. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was suggestive of angiomyolipoma with multiple large aneurysms and haemorrhage within the tumour. She was delivered at 38 weeks by elective caesarean section, to avoid the risk of rupture and bleeding from the aneurysms

The case of a 63-year-old woman with a relatively rapidly growing angiomyolipoma (AML) originating from the right renal sinus is presented. The tumor had enlarged to more than fivefold in volume (7.4 × 6.7 × 10.1 cm) in the 7 years following its detection (5.6 × 3.4 × 4.6 cm) and had significantly pushed aside the duodenum and the inferior vena cava. The tumor was surgically resected together with the right kidney, and pathological examination revealed AML originating from the renal sinus. An AML involving or originating from the renal sinus is exceedingly rare; only 14 cases have been reporte

Spontaneous pneumothorax occurs less in females than in males, in contrast to the relatively more commonly and incidentally found renal angiomyolipoma (AML). We report a renal AML in a 23-year-old female patient, which presented as right palpable abdominal mass. This renal tumor was removed owing to enlargement and internal hemorrhage and AML was proved by pathological examination. Three years later, she experienced a life-threatening spontaneous tension pneumothorax and pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), which was diagnosed by chest computed tomography. Clinically, she did not have tub

PURPOSE: We review our single center experience in the management of renal angiomyolipoma (AML) in patients who were treated with active surveillance (AS) or invasive treatment protocols.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospectively evaluated database was reviewed, and we identified 91 patients with the diagnosis of renal AML who presented between June 1985 and February 2009. Patient characteristics, clinical presentation, treatment modalities, and patient outcomes were evaluated. Patients on AS were analyzed for successful completion of the surveillance protocol considering age, symptomatic present

Angiomyolipomas are benign mesenchymal tumors mostly arising from the kidney. Angiomyolipoma of the colon is extremely rare. Here we report the findings of a 51-year-old man who presented with a submucosal tumor covered with normal mucosa and hemorrhage in the descending colon. He underwent a partial resection of the descending colon. A histopathological examination showed that the tumor of 5.7 cm in diameter included smooth muscle (spindle cell type), mature adipose tissue, and vessels, and therefore a diagnosis of angiomyolipoma was made. A submucosal type of angiomyolipoma of the colon is e

Renal angiomyolipomas are uncommon tumours during pregnancy, but it's important to consider them in the differential diagnosis, for the increased risk of complications such as bleeding, specially during pregnancy. Their characteristics are different depending on if the tumour is associated or not with facomatosis. To show both possibilities, we describe two cases of pregnant women with angiomyolipomas: the first one presented with bleeding of the tumour (Wünderlich's syndrome), but surveillance without treatment was possible until 37th week of gestation, and embolization of the tumour was perf

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to present the role of embolization in the treatment of renal angiomyolipoma (AML) in cases of hemorrhage and to prevent bleeding.
METHODS: Over a period of 10 years, 35 AMLs in 34 patients, recruited in two medical centers, were treated with embolization: 16/35 AML were treated urgently to stop bleeding, and 19/35 AML had preventive embolization. Six patients were completely asymptomatic and 13 had a history of previous hematoma or flank pain. Catheterization was highly selective in all cases (coaxial microcatheter in 19 cases), and for embolization we

The purpose of this study is to analyze the management strategy of renal angiomyolipoma. From 1990 to 2002, a total of 62 patients with renal angiomyolipoma were treated at our medical center. Angiomyolipomas were found in 44 female patients (71.0%) and 18 male patients. Of these patients the age ranged from 18 to 87 y/o (mean: 46.9 y/o). Four of 8 patients with bilateral angiomyolipomas were associated with tuberous sclerosis (TS). Nine (14.5%) of 62 patients had got spontaneous rupture. However, 54.8 per cent of patients were asymptomatic. The mean tumor size was 4.83 cm. Tumors larger than

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a tumour or an hamartomatous growth that usually affects the kidney. Only rarely has AML been described in the oral cavity. The authors report a case of AML located in the palate in a 43-year-old patient. AML is composed of smooth muscle cells, blood vessels and mature fat cells. In 50% of cases, AML presents with symptoms of tuberous sclerosis. Renal AML are often invasive, may involve regional nodes and may recur, while, on the contrary, AML are most often well circumscribed and easily resected. AML seems to follow an entire benign course.

AIMS: Monotypic epithelioid angiomyolipoma is a recently recognized renal tumour, which is composed purely of epithelioid cells coexpressing markers of both smooth muscle differentiation and melanogenesis (HMB45). We report here the first case of monotypic epithelioid angiomyolipoma arising in the liver.
CASE DETAILS: A 30-year-old woman without tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) was incidentally found to have a hepatic mass by ultrasonography. Grossly, the resected tumour showed a nodule-in-nodule appearance, with large areas of haemorrhagic necrosis. Microscopically, the tumour was composed o

Angiomyolipomas are benign mesenchymal tumours, mostly of renal origin. Hepatic angiomyolipomas are rare, and radiological and pathological diagnoses may be difficult We report on the first case of hepatic angiomyolipoma recurrence known to us, 6 years after surgical treatment of the initial tumour. Moreover, this hepatic recurrence was associated with renal angiomyolipoma without any stigmata of tuberous sclerosis.

The study included 25 patients with angiomyolipoma of the kidney. None of them had any signs of tuberous sclerosis. Serious clinical complications such as massive hemorrhage (2/25) and hydronephrosis (2/25) were documented in four patients. Concomitant adenoma of the adrenal gland and renal cell carcinoma were found in one patient each. All tumors consisted of a differing mixture of mature adipose tissue, smooth muscle cells and blood vessels, with thickened walls devoid of elastic lamina. Immunohistochemically, the smooth muscle cells stained strongly with antibodies against vimentin, desmin

PURPOSE: To make the policy of treatment with angiomyolipomas (AML) more clear, we discussed the natural history of angiomyolipomas retrospectively.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between May 1982 and December 1997, 14 patients with AML in 18 kidneys were followed, who were 2 men in 2 kidneys and 12 women in 16 kidneys, 27 to 80 years old. No patients suffered from tuberous sclerosis. Symptoms, initial sizes and changes of the size were evaluated for these patients.
RESULTS: Ten patients with AML in 14 kidneys were asymptomatic and four patients were symptomatic. But one of the 4 patients had symptom

BACKGROUND: Nephron-sparing surgery is ideal in the treatment of renal angiomyolipoma (AML). But, in fact, occasional cases are found in post-ruptured AML and/or in bilateral multiple AMLs, that is seen in tuberous sclerosis. And we cannot perform nephron sparing surgery so easily. We proposed the treatment selection in such complicated AML.
METHODS: We experienced 10 cases (12 kidneys) for about ten years, and studied our treatment selection and prognosis on each cases retrospectively.
RESULTS: Of the 5 kidneys with AML less than 4 cm in diameter, 4 have not encountered with rupture. Of the

We describe the very pathognomonic CT aspects of giant renal angiomyolipomas fortuitously demonstrated in a young male with typical neurological and dermatological patterns of tuberous sclerosis. Angiomyolipomas are rare but 20 to 50% are associated with multiple sclerosis. The advent of CT has made the diagnosis much accurate and avoids unnecessary surgery especially for a single mass. The presence of fat intermixed with areas of other tissue density is very specific and practically excludes the diagnosis of renal carcinoma. Along with MRI, CT is a method of choice to delineate the sometimes

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor, constituting less than 10% of renal masses, and occurs sporadically or in association with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). AML is generally categorized into classic AML and epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML), with the latter comprising approximately 4.6% of AML cases. EAML is characterized by a predominance of epithelioid cells, minimal adipose tissue, and distinct histological features such as necrosis and potential malignancy, which can lead to misdiagnosis as renal cell carcinoma (RCC). This report presents a case of renal EAML in a

Angiomyolipomas are usually found in the kidneys of patients with tuberous sclerosis. They occur less frequently in organs such as the liver, the oral cavity, the nasal cavity, the heart, the large intestines, and the lungs. Angiomyolipomas of the skin are extremely rare, and cutaneous angiomyolipomas generally occur on the elbow, the ends of digits, the ear, and the glabella. Herein we present a rare case of angiomyolipoma occurring on the face-specifically, the right upper eyelid. We propose that upper eyelid angiomyolipoma is a hamartomatous, rather than neoplastic, lesion. Although angiomy

Epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML) of the kidney is an uncommon neoplasm with malignant potential. It can occur sporadically or be associated with tuberous sclerosis. EAML is a monotypic variant of angiomyolipoma (AML), which is classified as neoplasm of the perivascular epithelioid cell or perivascular epithelioid cell tumor. Due to its epithelioid nature and paucity of fat components, unlike classic AML, which has abundant adipose tissue with characteristic features on CT scans, it is difficult to distinguish EAML from renal cell carcinoma and fat-poor AML on CT or MRI preoperatively, which m
