Nonclassic fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva: A child from Angola with an ACVR1G328E variant.

Little is known about FOP in Africa and few cases of nonclassic fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) have been reported on the continent. Here we report a three-year-old girl from Angola with a nonclassic FOP clinical presentation that is characterized by complex malformations of the toes and fingers, reduction defects of the digits, absence of nails, progressive heterotopic ossification, and a confirmed heterozygous ACVR1 variant at c.983G > A. Emerging knowledge of FOP can serve as a catalyst for increasing awareness of FOP in under-represented medical communities by achieving a corre

Rhipicephalus microplus (Acarina, Ixodidae) in Angola: evidence of its establishment and expansion.

Livestock constitutes a fundamental asset for the livelihood of rural communities in Angola. Rhipicephalus microplus (Acarina, Ixodidae) is considered to be the most important external parasite impacting the cattle industry in the world. The present work used a cross-sectional study on tick species infesting cattle in smallholder and commercial farms, to investigate the presence of R. microplus in Angola. This species was found to be recently established in certain areas of Cuanza-Sul and Benguela provinces. Furthermore, taking the current understanding of the pattern of dispersal of R. microp

Estimating the number of unvaccinated Chinese workers against yellow fever in Angola.

BACKGROUND: A yellow fever epidemic occurred in Angola in 2016 with 884 laboratory confirmed cases and 373 deaths. Eleven unvaccinated Chinese nationals working in Angola were also infected and imported the disease to China, thereby presenting the first importation of yellow fever into Asia. In Angola, there are about 259,000 Chinese foreign workers. The fact that 11 unvaccinated Chinese workers acquired yellow fever suggests that many more Chinese workers in Angola were not vaccinated. METHODS: We applied a previously developed model to back-calculate the number of unvaccinated Chinese worke

Poliomyelitis in Angola: current status and implications for poliovirus eradication in Southern Africa.

As part of emergency assistance to the Ministry of Health (MOH), national surveillance data for poliomyelitis and charts of cases at the national rehabilitation hospital were reviewed. Poliomyelitis patients admitted to Angola's main pediatric hospital were examined. A mean of 86 cases of poliomyelitis/year were reported in Angola during 1989-1994. Review of records from non-MOH sources uncovered another 74 cases, primarily from areas outside governmental control. Hospital chart reviews revealed that 80% of the cases were children <3 years of age, mainly unvaccinated. Molecular analyses of iso

Hepatitis B (HBsAg) prevalence among obstetric patients in Caluquembe, Angola, 2023-2024.

OBJECTIVES: Newborns who contract hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections at birth often develop chronic infections that can cause cirrhosis, liver cancer, and death in middle adulthood. Birth doses of hepatitis B vaccine can be lifesaving for babies born to mothers with hepatitis B infections. We aimed to measure hepatitis B prevalence among maternity patients in Huíla, a rural province in southwestern Angola. METHODS: We conducted a prospective case series study among 317 peripartum women at the Hospital Evangélico de Caluquembe from November 2023 to February 2024. Each participant received a po

Geographical Heterogeneity in Antimalarial Resistance Markers by Genomic Surveillance in Angola, 2023.

Plasmodium falciparum malaria remains a leading cause of mortality in Angola, with emerging antimalarial resistance threatening treatment and prevention strategies. Efficacy of artemether-lumefantrine has been reported below 90% in two provinces, underscoring the need for routine resistance surveillance. This study aimed to provide a geographically comprehensive and up-to-date overview of antimalarial drug resistance markers in Angola. Between March and July 2023, dried blood spots and demographic data were collected from P. falciparum-positive participants at 14 health facilities across 7 pro

Newborn screening for sickle cell disease in Caluquembe, southwestern Angola, 2024-2025.

OBJECTIVES: Angola is one of the countries with the highest prevalence of sickle cell disease (SCD). Neonatal SCD testing is recommended by the Angolan government, but it is not routinely performed. Nearly all previous studies of SCD have been conducted in cities. We implemented a neonatal SCD screening program in a referral hospital in Huíla province to examine the epidemiology of SCD in this Umbundu-speaking population and to demonstrate the feasibility of using point-of-care (POC) tests for SCD in a rural setting. METHODS: Between October 2024 and February 2025, we screened 353 infants les

Mapping of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases across 15 provinces of Angola.

INTRODUCTION: Schistosomiasis (SCH) and soil transmitted helminthiases (STH) have been historically recognized as a major public health problem in Angola. However, lack of reliable, country wide prevalence data on these diseases has been a major hurdle to plan and implement programme actions to target these diseases. This study aimed to characterize SCH and STH prevalence and distribution in Angola. METHODS: A country wide mapping was conducted in October 2018 (1 province) and from July to December 2019 (14 provinces) in school aged (SAC) children in 15 (of 18) provinces in Angola, using WHO

Coinfection between SARS-CoV-2 and vector-borne diseases in Luanda, Angola.

Co-epidemics happening simultaneously can generate a burden on healthcare systems. The co-occurrence of SARS-CoV-2 with vector-borne diseases (VBD), such as malaria and dengue in resource-limited settings represents an additional challenge to the healthcare systems. Herein, we assessed the coinfection rate between SARS-CoV-2 and VBD to highlight the need to carry out an accurate diagnosis and promote timely measures for these infections in Luanda, the capital city of Angola. This was a cross-sectional study conducted with 105 subjects tested for the SARS-CoV-2 and VBD with a rapid detection te

Iron deficiency anaemia among 6-to-36-month children from northern Angola.

BACKGROUND: Angola is one of the southern African countries with the highest prevalence of anaemia. Identifying anaemia determinants is an important step for the design of evidence-based control strategies. In this study, we aim at documenting the factors associated with Iron Deficiency Anaemia (IDA) in 948 children recruited at the Health Research Center of Angola study area during 2015. METHODS: Data on demographic, socio-economic and parental practices regarding water, sanitation, hygiene, malaria infection and infant and young child feeding were collected, as well as parasitological, bioc

Genetic diversity, transmission dynamics and drug resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Angola.

Tuberculosis (TB) poses a serious public health problem in Angola. No surveillance data on drug resistance is available and nothing is known regarding the genetic diversity and population structure of circulating Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. Here, we have genotyped and evaluated drug susceptibility of 89 Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolates from Luanda. Thirty-three different spoligotype profiles corresponding to 24 different Shared International Types (SIT) and 9 orphan profiles were detected. SIT 20 (LAM1) was the most prevalent (n = 16, 18.2%) followed by SIT 42 (LAM9; n = 15

Low-grade sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine resistance in Plasmodium falciparum parasites from Lubango, Angola.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major parasitic disease, affecting millions of people in endemic areas. Plasmodium falciparum parasites are responsible for the most severe cases and its resistance to anti-malarial drugs is notorious. This is a possible obstacle to the effectiveness of intermittent preventive treatment (IPT) based on sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) cures administrated to pregnant women (IPTp) during their pregnancy. As this intervention is recommended in Angola since 2006, it has assessed, in this country, the molecular profiles in P. falciparum dhfr and dhps, two polymorphic genes ass
