Animal-assisted interventions for depression in older adults: an umbrella review with meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depression affects up to 30% of older adults and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Animal-assisted interventions (AAIs) - usually known as "pet therapy" - have emerged as promising complementary approaches, yet evidence synthesis remains fragmented. OBJECTIVE: To comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of AAI in reducing depressive symptoms among older adults through an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses, incorporating trial sequential analysis. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library through September 2

Gallic Acid Restores the Sulfonamide Sensitivity of Multidrug-Resistant Streptococcus suis via Polypharmaceology Mechanism.

Due to the large amount of antibiotics used for human therapy, agriculture, and even aquaculture, the emergence of multidrug-resistant Streptococcus suis (S. suis) led to serious public health threats. Antibiotic-assisted strategies have emerged as a promising approach to alleviate this crisis. Here, the polyphenolic compound gallic acid was found to enhance sulfonamides against multidrug-resistant S. suis. Mechanistic analysis revealed that gallic acid effectively disrupts the integrity and function of the cytoplasmic membrane by dissipating the proton motive force of bacteria. Moreover, we f

A Systematic Review of the Influence of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure on Fetal and Newborn Animal Models: Suggestions to Improve Neonatal Respiratory Care.

INTRODUCTION: Prematurely born infants regularly develop respiratory distress syndrome and require assisted ventilation. Ventilation may injure the premature lung and increase the risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), a form of noninvasive ventilation, is commonly used in modern neonatology. Limited clinical data are available on the acute and long-term effect of neonatal exposure to CPAP on the lung. Given the restricted clinical data, newborn animal models have been used to study the influence of CPAP on lung structure and function. The findings of a

Progress in translational reproductive science: testicular tissue transplantation and in vitro spermatogenesis.

Since the birth of the first child conceived via in vitro fertilization 40 years ago, fertility treatments and assisted reproductive technology have allowed many couples to reach their reproductive goals. As of yet, no fertility options are available for men who cannot produce functional sperm, but many experimental therapies have demonstrated promising results in animal models. Both autologous (stem cell transplantation, de novo morphogenesis, and testicular tissue grafting) and outside-the-body (xenografting and in vitro spermatogenesis) approaches exist for restoring sperm production in inf

Some food toxic for pets.

According to world statistics, dogs and cats are the species that owners most frequently seek assistance with potential poisonings, accounting 95-98% of all reported animal cases. Exposures occur more commonly in the summer and in December that is associated with the holiday season. The majority (>90%) of animal poisonings are accidental and acute in nature and occur near or at the animal owner's home. Feeding human foodstuff to pets may also prove dangerous for their health. The aim of this review was to present common food items that should not be fed (intentionally or unintentionally) to dog

Efficacy and safety of a low-flow veno-venous carbon dioxide removal device: results of an experimental study in adult sheep.

INTRODUCTION: Extracorporeal lung assist, an extreme resource in patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF), is expanding its indications since knowledge about ventilator-induced lung injury has increased and protective ventilation has become the standard in ARF. METHODS: A prospective study on seven adult sheep was conducted to quantify carbon dioxide (CO2) removal and evaluate the safety of an extracorporeal membrane gas exchanger placed in a veno-venous pump-driven bypass. Animals were anaesthetised, intubated, ventilated in order to reach hypercapnia, and then connected to the CO2 remo

Improving prognosis in type 2 diabetes. Diabetic neuropathy is in trouble.

Painful sensory syndromes and the anesthetic foot result in much clinical morbidity and patient unhappiness in diabetes. As yet, a satisfactory and fundamental therapy is not available to us to help patients. Effective blood glucose control and vigilant screening programs for foot problems are all we have to offer. Clinical observation of neuropathic syndromes and measures of nerve function have not led to significant understanding of pathogenesis. The primary source of understanding of pathways to nerve damage come from animal studies, despite the fears that the model in diabetes in no way re

Uterus Transplantation: the Translational Evolution of a Clinical Breakthrough.

Women suffering from absolute uterine factor infertility (AUFI), due to either lack of a uterus or one unable to sustain neonatal viability, presented as one of the last frontiers in conquering infertility. Following systematic animal research for over a decade, uterus transplantation was tested as a treatment for AUFI in 2012, which culminated in the first human live birth in 2014. The development of uterus transplantation from mouse to human has followed both the Moore criteria for introduction of a surgical innovation and the IDEAL concept for evaluation of a novel major surgical procedure.

Endovascular broad-neck aneurysm creation in a porcine model using a vascular plug.

PURPOSE: Ruptured cerebral arterial aneurysms require prompt treatment by either surgical clipping or endovascular coiling. Training for these sophisticated endovascular procedures is essential and ideally performed in animals before their use in humans. Simulators and established animal models have shown drawbacks with respect to degree of reality, size of the animal model and aneurysm, or time and effort needed for aneurysm creation. We therefore aimed to establish a realistic and readily available aneurysm model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five anticoagulated domestic pigs underwent endovascul

Robotically Assisted Sonic Therapy (RAST) for Noninvasive Hepatic Ablation in a Porcine Model: Mitigation of Body Wall Damage with a Modified Pulse Sequence.

PURPOSE: Robotically assisted sonic therapy (RAST) is a nonthermal, noninvasive ablation method based on histotripsy. Prior animal studies have demonstrated the ability to create hepatic ablation zones at the focal point of an ultrasound therapy transducer; however, these treatments resulted in thermal damage to the body wall within the path of ultrasound energy delivery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a pulse sequence intended to mitigate prefocal body wall injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Healthy swine (n = 6) underwent hepatic RAST (VortxRx software vers

Left Ventricular Assist Devices for Acute Myocardial Infarct Size Reduction: Meta-analysis.

We conducted a meta-analysis of preclinical studies that tested left ventricular assist device (LVAD) therapy for reducing myocardial infarct size in experimental acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Twenty-six articles were included with a total of 488 experimental animal subjects. The meta-analysis showed that infarct size was significantly decreased by LVAD support compared to control animals (SDM, - 2.19; 95% CI, - 2.70 to - 1.69; P < 0.001). The meta-regression analysis demonstrated a high degree of heterogeneity associated with time from coronary artery occlusion to LVAD support, which cor
