Identifying the Drivers Related to Animal Reservoirs, Environment, and Socio-Demography of Human Leptospirosis in Different Community Types of Southern Chile: An Application of Machine Learning Algorithm in One Health Perspective.

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis with global public health impact, particularly in poor socio-economic settings in tropical regions. Transmitted through urine-contaminated water or soil from rodents, dogs, and livestock, leptospirosis causes over a million clinical cases annually. Risk factors include outdoor activities, livestock production, and substandard housing that foster high densities of animal reservoirs. This One Health study in southern Chile examined Leptospira serological evidence of exposure in people from urban slums, semi-rural settings, and farm settings, using the Extreme Gradient

Pathophysiological Studies of Monoaminergic Neurotransmission Systems in Valproic Acid-Induced Model of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with complex etiology. The core syndromes of ASD are deficits in social communication and self-restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. Social communication relies on the proper integration of sensory and motor functions, which is tightly interwoven with the limbic function of reward, motivation, and emotion in the brain. Monoamine neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, are key players in the modulation of neuronal activity. Owing to their broad distribution, the monoamine neurotransmitter syst

Improving social participation of children with autism spectrum disorder: Pilot testing of an early animal-assisted intervention in Spain.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience moderate to profound challenges in relation to the skills required for social participation. Animal-assisted intervention (AAI) is increasingly used within early community care. However, the results of its early application in this population group are not known. This pilot study aimed to explore the feasibility of an early intervention based on the use of therapy dogs and to examine their impact on communication and social interaction skills. A within-subject quasi-experimental longitudinal design was used. The instruments for measuring

Cost Description and Comparative Cost Efficiency of Post-Exposure Prophylaxis and Canine Mass Vaccination against Rabies in N'Djamena, Chad.

Rabies claims approximately 59,000 human lives annually and is a potential risk to 3.3 billion people in over 100 countries worldwide. Despite being fatal in almost 100% of cases, human rabies can be prevented by vaccinating dogs, the most common vector, and the timely administration of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to exposed victims. For the control and prevention of human rabies in N'Djamena, the capital city of Chad, a free mass vaccination campaign for dogs was organized in 2012 and 2013. The campaigns were monitored by parallel studies on the incidence of canine rabies based on diagnos

The effect of a therapy dog on the communication skills of an adult with aphasia.

UNLABELLED: Little evidence-based research has been published within the field of communication disorders on the role of dogs as catalysts for human communication. This single participant study, a point of entry into this realm of research, explores the effects of a therapy dog on the communication skills of a patient with aphasia receiving intensive speech and language therapy within a rehabilitation setting. The researchers conclude that the presence of the dog does have the potential to stimulate both overt social-verbal and social-nonverbal communication. LEARNING OUTCOMES: As a result of

Stakeholder attitudes and perspectives on wildlife disease surveillance as a component of a One Health approach in Thailand.

Coordinated wildlife disease surveillance (WDS) can help professionals across disciplines effectively safeguard human, animal, and environmental health. The aims of this study were to understand how WDS in Thailand is utilized, valued, and can be improved within a One Health framework. An online questionnaire was distributed to 183 professionals (55.7% response rate) across Thailand working in wildlife, marine animal, livestock, domestic animal, zoo animal, environmental, and public health sectors. Twelve semi-structured interviews with key professionals were then performed. Three-quarters of

Critical analysis of the value of the rabbit median nerve model for biomedical research on peripheral nerve grafts.

The rabbit has been proposed to represent an animal model that allows studying peripheral nerve regeneration across extended gap lengths. We describe here our experiences with the rabbit median nerve model and the obstacles it comes along with. This short communication is meant to inform the community and to prevent other researcher from investing time and animal lives in a model with low translational power.

Detection, communication, and individual identification with deep audio embeddings: A case study with North Atlantic right whales.

Anthropogenic noise has increased ambient sound levels across the globe, both underwater and on land. Among its many negative impacts, heightened noise can impair communication in vocal animals through acoustic masking. Conceptually, noise reduces the animal's communication space - the area in which an individual animal can effectively convey information to a conspecific listener. Previous studies have estimated the communication space using sound propagation models and/or behavioral studies. However, studies frequently equate signal recognition with signal detection - a necessary but not suff

Investigating social communication in mice: A two-intruders test approach.

Understanding the complex dynamics of social communication behaviors, such as exploration, communication, courtship, mating, and aggression in animal models, is crucial to reveal key neural and hormonal mechanisms underlying these behaviors. The two-intruders test is designed to investigate residents' behavior toward both male and female intruders within the home cage of the test male. During this test imitating natural conditions, several aspects of social interaction were investigated: Exploration, courtship, mating, and aggressive behavior. As mating and aggression involve overlapping neura

The role of microbiome in gut-brain-axis dysbiosis causing depression: From mechanisms to treatment.

Gut microbiota not only affects the function of the gastrointestinal tract but also the function of other organs, including the brain. The microbiota-gut-brain axis reflects the constant bidirectional communication between the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract. Gut microbiota metabolites can cross brain barriers, the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSF) and influence neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression. In recent years, the communication between the microbiome and brain in depression has been extensively studied in humans a

Outcome measures in rodent models for spinal cord injury and their human correlates.

Pre-clinical research is intended to inform clinical research, however, communication between these researchers is lacking. A better understanding of what can be learned from animal and human models and what cannot, is essential. This includes a better understanding of where underlying constructs in outcome measures in rodents and humans align and where they diverge to improve dialogue between human and animal researchers. The goal of this review is to promote an understanding of similarities and differences in outcome measures and encourage consideration of these differences when planning, in

Distinct early development trajectories in Nf1± and Tsc2± mouse models of autism.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social communication and interaction, and repetitive behaviors. Males are three times more likely to be diagnosed with ASD than females, and sex-dependent alterations in behavior and communication have been reported both in clinical and animal research. Animal models are useful for understanding ASD-related manifestations and their associated neurobiological mechanisms. However, even though ASD is diagnosed during childhood, relatively few animal studies have focused on neonatal developmen

Using One Health assessments to leverage endemic disease frameworks for emerging zoonotic disease threats in Libya.

Continued emergence, re-emergence and spread of zoonotic diseases demonstrates the imperative need for multisectoral communication and joint coordination of disease detection and response. While there are existing international frameworks underpinning One Health capacity building for pandemic prevention and response, often guidance does not account for challenges faced by countries undergoing long-term conflict and sociopolitical instability. The purpose of this research was to identify Libya's laboratory and surveillance networks and routes of inter- and multisectoral communication and coordi

Blast trauma affects production and perception of mouse ultrasonic vocalizations.

Blast trauma from explosions affects hearing and communication in a significant proportion of soldiers. Many veterans report difficulty communicating, especially in noisy and reverberant environments, which contributes to complex mental health problems including anxiety and depression. However, the relationship between communication and perceptual problems after a blast has received little scientific attention. In the current studies, the effects of blast trauma on the production and perception of ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) by CBA/CaJ mice, a common animal model for hearing and communicat

From Persuasion to Partnership: Evaluating the Practicalities, Ethics, and Evidence for Implementing Motivational Interviewing in Veterinary Practice.

Veterinary medicine fundamentally revolves around working with people to positively influence how they care for their animals. Veterinarians have traditionally used directive advice-giving when providing clients with recommendations, which can inadvertently push clients further away from change despite good intentions by evoking resistance and leaving the underlying motivational and contextual barriers to change unaddressed. Motivational interviewing (MI), a collaborative communication approach originally developed for addiction counselling, has been widely adapted across many fields because o

Sex Steroids as Regulators of Gestural Communication.

Gestural communication is ubiquitous throughout the animal kingdom, occurring in species that range from humans to arthropods. Individuals produce gestural signals when their nervous system triggers the production of limb and body movement, which in turn functions to help mediate communication between or among individuals. Like many stereotyped motor patterns, the probability of a gestural display in a given social context can be modulated by sex steroid hormones. Here, we review how steroid hormones mediate the neural mechanisms that underly gestural communication in humans and nonhumans alik
