Novel aspects of vitamin A metabolism in the dog: distribution of lipoprotein retinyl esters in vitamin A-deprived and cholesterol-fed animals.

Retinyl ester concentrations in plasma from fasting humans, rabbits and rats are usually negligible. In contrast, plasma from fasting dogs contains appreciable amounts of retinyl esters, associated almost entirely with the low-density lipoproteins. This study was undertaken to gather additional information about the nature and origin of canine retinyl ester-containing lipoproteins. We examined the metabolism of endogenous lipoprotein retinyl esters in adult mongrel dogs with moderate vitamin A deficiency. Four animals were fed a diet of oatmeal and tuna fish that provided only 4% of the vitami

A high level estimation of the net economic benefits to small-scale livestock producers arising from animal health product distribution initiatives.

INTRODUCTION: A fundamental challenge for charities that facilitate distribution of animal health products to small-scale livestock producers (SSPs) in low and middle income countries (LMICs) is identifying the products and market mechanisms that provide the greatest positive impact for SSPs and estimating their associated impact. This paper describes a pragmatic approach to modeling the impact of market-led product distribution initiatives based on estimating the net economic benefit of administration of animal health products. METHODS: The model estimates the economic impact of diseases at

Long term trends and spatial distribution of animal bite injuries and deaths due to human rabies infection in Uganda, 2001-2015.

BACKGROUND: In the absence of accurate data on trends and the burden of human rabies infection in developing countries, animal bite injuries provide useful information to bridge that gap. Rabies is one of the most deadly infectious diseases, with a case fatality rate approaching 100%. Despite availability of effective prevention and control strategies, rabies still kills 50,000 to 60,000 people worldwide annually, the majority of whom are in the developing world. We describe trends and geographical distribution of animal bite injuries (a proxy of potential exposure to rabies) and deaths due to

Dyssynchronous heart failure: mitochondrial distribution and functions mirror regional workload and energy demand in a large-animal model of ventricular desynchronization.

AIMS: In dyssynchronous heart failure (DHF), left bundle branch block (LBBB) causes inhomogeneous left ventricular (LV) workload and systolic dysfunction. We aimed to investigate underlying metabolic remodelling in an ovine model. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eleven sheep with dual-chamber-pacemakers for LBBB-like activation (DHF) were studied at baseline and after eight weeks. Six untreated sheep served as controls (CTRL). Regional workload was evaluated using invasive hemodynamics and echocardiography. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-tracer positron-emission-tomography/computed tomography visualized regiona

MORPHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT OF NO-SYNTHASE DISTRIBUTION IN OVERACTIVE BLADDER AND STRESS URINE INCONTINENCE IN ANIMAL MODELS ADMINISTERED WITH EXPERIMENTAL PHARMACOCORRECTION REGIMENS.

The objective of the study was immunohistochemical evaluation of distribution of various NO synthase fractions in the structural elements of the bladder wall under stress urinary incontinence and its overactivity prior and post Mirabegron, Spasmex, Quercetin therapies and their combinations with Testosterone and Estradiol. Using the immunohistochemical method, we studied the expression of the main fractions of NO synthase in experimental models of hyperactive bladder (OAB) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). We found that OAB and SUI were characterized by emergence of expression of the indu

Distribution of mutation frequencies among Salmonella enterica isolates from animal and human sources and genetic characterization of a Salmonella Heidelberg hypermutator.

Hypermutation is an important mechanism used by different Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica to regulate genetic stability in adaptation to changing environments, including antimicrobial treatments and industrial processes. Strong hypermutator strains generally contain a mutation in genes of the methyl mismatch repair (MMR) system and have mutation frequencies up to 1000-fold higher than wild type strains. The objectives of this study were to determine the distribution of mutation frequencies from a collection of 209 Salmonella strains, to genetically characterize a strong mutator, and to

Intracarotid Infusion of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in an Animal Model of Parkinson's Disease, Focusing on Cell Distribution and Neuroprotective and Behavioral Effects.

UNLABELLED: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been proposed as a potential therapeutic tool for Parkinson's disease (PD) and systemic administration of these cells has been tested in preclinical and clinical studies. However, no information on survival and actual capacity of MSCs to reach the brain has been provided. In this study, we evaluated homing of intraarterially infused rat MSCs (rMSCs) in the brain of rats bearing a 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced lesion of the nigrostriatal tract, to establish whether the toxin-induced damage is sufficient to grant MSC passage across the blood-br

Rapid urbanization of red foxes in Estonia: distribution, behaviour, attacks on domestic animals, and health-risks related to zoonotic diseases.

Urban areas are becoming increasingly important for wildlife as diminishing natural habitats no longer represent a suitable environment for many species. Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are nowadays common in many cities worldwide, and in recent years they have colonized urban areas in Estonia. We used a public web-based questionnaire approach to evaluate the distribution and behaviour of Estonian urban foxes, to detect related problems and to assess health risks to humans and domestic animals. In total, 1205 responses were collected throughout the country. Foxes have colonized the majority of Eston

Serovar and sequence type distribution and phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella originating from pet animals in Chongqing, China.

A total of 334 Salmonella isolates were recovered from 6,223 pet rectal samples collected at 50 pet clinics, 42 pet shops, 7 residential areas, and 4 plazas. Forty serovars were identified that included all strains except for one isolate that did not cluster via self-agglutination, with Salmonella Typhimurium monophasic variant, Salmonella Kentucky, Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Pomona, and Salmonella Give being the predominant serovars. Fifty-one sequence types were identified among the isolates, and ST198, ST11, ST19, ST451, ST34, and ST155 were the most common. The top four dominant an

Drug nanocarriers labeled with near-infrared-emitting quantum dots (quantoplexes): imaging fast dynamics of distribution in living animals.

The knowledge of the biodistribution of macromolecular drug formulations is a key to their successful development for specific tissue- and tumor-targeting after systemic application. Based on the polyplex formulations, we introduce novel drug nanocarriers, which we denote as "quantoplexes" incorporating near-infrared (IR)-emitting cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs), polyethylenimine (PEI), and a macromolecular model drug [plasmid DNA (pDNA)], and demonstrate the ability of tracking these bioactive compounds in living animals. Epidemiological distribution of Echinococcus granulosus s.l. infection in human and domestic animal hosts in European Mediterranean and Balkan countries: A systematic review.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a neglected zoonosis caused by infection with the cestode Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. We carried out a systematic literature review on E. granulosus s.l. human and animal (cattle, sheep, dog) infection in European Mediterranean and Balkan countries in 2000-2019, to provide a picture of its recent epidemiology in this endemic area. MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, Google Scholar and Open Grey databases were searched. Included cases were: i) for humans, data from hospital records and imaging studies; ii) for dogs, data from necropsy and coprological studies; iii) fo

Effect of PEEP and tidal volume on ventilation distribution and end-expiratory lung volume: a prospective experimental animal and pilot clinical study.

INTRODUCTION: Lung-protective ventilation aims at using low tidal volumes (VT) at optimum positive end-expiratory pressures (PEEP). Optimum PEEP should recruit atelectatic lung regions and avoid tidal recruitment and end-inspiratory overinflation. We examined the effect of VT and PEEP on ventilation distribution, regional respiratory system compliance (C(RS)), and end-expiratory lung volume (EELV) in an animal model of acute lung injury (ALI) and patients with ARDS by using electrical impedance tomography (EIT) with the aim to assess tidal recruitment and overinflation. METHODS: EIT examinati

Use of Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging for Distribution of Animals by Severity of Brain Tissue Damage in a Neonatal Hypoxia-Ischemia Model in Mice.

Background/Objectives: Inter-individual variability in injury severity represents a major barrier to reproducibility in neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) models. Objective early postoperative stratification of animals is therefore essential for standardized group allocation and reliable assessment of experimental outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate whether laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) can be used as a rapid, noninvasive tool for early post hoc stratification of ischemic brain damage severity in neonatal mice following HI. Methods: Neonatal CD-1 mice (postnatal day 9; n = 60) underwent

Cytokeratin expression and distribution pattern of epithelioid macrophages in animals with different pathological forms of bovine paratuberculosis: potential role in resilience to PTB.

Paratuberculosis (PTB) is a chronic enteritis caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map). Genome-wide association studies revealed a significant enrichment of the keratinization pathway in cattle with multifocal lesions, suggesting a potential role of cytokeratins (CKs) in PTB resilience mechanisms. To confirm this, the amount of CK-expressing cells was analyzed in granulomas from the distal jejunum (DJE) and jejunal lymph nodes (DJELN) of animals with focal, multifocal, and diffuse lesions, and in control animals without lesions. Quantitative double-immunohistochemical (D-IHC
