Expanded DNA repeat sequences are known to cause over 20 diseases, including Huntington's disease, several types of spinocerebellar ataxia and myotonic dystrophy type 1 and 2. A shared genetic basis, and overlapping clinical features for some of these diseases, indicate that common pathways may contribute to pathology. Multiple mechanisms, mediated by both expanded homopolymeric proteins and expanded repeat RNA, have been identified by the use of model systems, that may account for shared pathology. The use of such animal models enables identification of distinct pathways and their 'molecular

BACKGROUND: Sheep and goats are essential components of global livestock systems, supporting smallholder livelihoods and contributing substantially to meat, milk, and fiber production. However, many small ruminant production systems remain extensive and constrained by limited infrastructure, labor availability, and challenges in continuous animal monitoring. Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers new opportunities for precision livestock management through automated data analysis, early detection of production- and health-related changes, and improved decision support. This systematic review aime

Over 2,000 species of fleas parasitize mammals and birds. A simplified study of their morphology indicates for the main identification criteria. After listing the main families of fleas, the author outlines the identification of species most often encountered by veterinarians. Knowledge of the different types of flea parasitism and their life cycles is essential for effective control measures. Control is justified by the direct and indirect pathogenic roles of fleas (transmission of plague, tularaemia, myxomatosis, Dipylidium caninum). Effective agents are organochlorine compounds, organophosp

With approximately 60% of human infectious diseases originating from zoonotic sources, an integrated approach to animal health management is critical. Significant barriers persist in optimizing disease control strategies, particularly regarding diagnostics, surveillance, biosecurity, and vaccination systems. Beyond technical and health-related aspects, socio-economic factors substantially influence both adoption and efficacy of intervention measures. While these determinants have been increasingly explored through integration of social sciences, such as economics, sociology, political science,

The growth in wirelessly enabled sensor network technologies has enabled the low cost deployment of sensor platforms with applications in a range of sectors and communities. In the agricultural domain such sensors have been the foundation for the creation of decision support tools that enhance farm operational efficiency. This Research Reflection illustrates how these advances are assisting dairy farmers to optimise performance and illustrates where emerging sensor technology can offer additional benefits. One of the early applications for sensor technology at an individual animal level was th

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a betaherpesvirus, which, like all herpesviruses, establishes a life-long latent infection while retaining the ability to reactivate its replicative program. While HCMV likely reactivates frequently and sporadically in healthy individuals and typically without disease, reactivation poses a serious disease threat in the immunocompromised. The latent program of HCMV is complex and has been challenging to define due to limitations in appropriate experimental model systems related to virus-host species specificity, limited identification of in vivo latent reservoirs

Despite recent advances in perforator flap reconstruction, there can be significant variability in vessel size and location. Although preoperative evaluation may provide valuable information, real-time intraoperative methods have the potential to provide the greatest benefit. Our laboratory has developed the Fluorescence-Assisted Resection and Exploration (FLARE) near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging system for intraoperative visualization of details of the underlying vasculature. The FLARE system uses indocyanine green, a safe and reliable NIR fluorophore already FDA-approved for other ind

Social housing is recommended where possible for laboratory mice. In order to achieve this, mice must be individually identifiable. Although, various methods are available, permanent identification is often required, such as ear notching. This method is likely to be painful and to date there is limited literature on pain assessment and alleviation for this routine husbandry practice. Here we aimed to determine if the mouse grimace scale (MGS) could be used to assess pain in C57BL/6 mice following routine ear notching. Langford et al. found that very acute noxious stimuli (i.e. < 10 min in dura

Rhipicephalus microplus (R. microplus) is the most significant tick in cattle worldwide, including Mexico; however, its presence in sheep is infrequent and typically associated with accidental exposures in production systems where they coexist with infested cattle. The objective of this study is to describe R. microplus infestation in sheep from Yucatán, Mexico, and to determine their toxicological response to coumaphos, cypermethrin, and ivermectin (IVM). The animal population of the production unit under study was examined for the presence of ticks, revealing infestations in sheep and cattle

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a multisystem connective tissue disease characterized by the three cardinal pathological features, comprising aberrant immune activation, vasculopathy and tissue fibrosis, with unknown etiology. Although many inducible and genetic animal models mimicking the selected aspects of SSc have been well documented, the lack of models encompassing the full clinical manifestations hindered the development and preclinical testing of therapies against this disease. Under this situation, three new genetic animal models have recently been established, such as Fra2 transgenic mic

Rapid and accurate identification of disease progression are key factors in testing novel vaccines and antivirals against encephalitic alphaviruses. Typical efficacy studies utilize a large number of animals and severe morbidity or mortality as an endpoint. New technologies provide a means to reduce and refine the animal use as proposed in Hume's 3Rs (replacement, reduction, refinement) described by Russel and Burch. In vivo imaging systems (IVIS) and bioluminescent enzyme technologies accomplish the reduction of animal requirements while shortening the experimental time and improving the accu

Human health is a major concern when considering the disposal of large quantities of animal waste. Health concerns could arise from exposure to pathogens and excess nitrogen associated with this form of pollution. The objective was to collect and analyze health data related to selected bacterial infections associated with the use of animal waste in Louisiana. An analysis of adverse health effects has been conducted based on the incidence/prevalence rates of campylobacteriosis, E. coli O157:H7 infection, salmonellosis and shigellosis. The number of reported cases increased during the summer mon

An experimental model system is presented that allows the identification and follow-up of mice exposed to ionizing radiation using flow-cytometric measurements of peripheral blood cells. In an experiment, properties of peripheral blood cells were analysed with flow cytometry for a rapid identification of individuals exposed to radiation. Individuals were then followed longitudinally in an attempt to identify those developing neoplasias. Male CBA mice, 25 days old, were subjected to fractionated x-irradiation (4 x 1.31 Gy) to induce haematopoietic malignancies. By repeated blood sampling follow

The term "New Approach Methodologies" (NAMs) comprises a plethora of approaches with the potential for testing the safety, efficacy, and biological effects of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and other substances without relying exclusively on traditional animal testing methodologies. While it is debateable whether "new" is the appropriate terminology - some NAMs have been around for several decades, while others have been developed recently - many scholars have observed that the effective uptake of NAMs in regulatory toxicology remains a challenge. The interdisciplinary CHANGE project applies a sy

The past 5 years have seen unprecedented advances in our knowledge about the neurobiology of depression. Significant breakthroughs have been made in genomics, imaging, and the identification of key neural systems involved in cognition, emotion, and behavior. In addition, novel targets have been identified for the development of new pharmacological and behavioral treatments. Genetic variations associated with most mental disorders are being identified, and reliable tests for early detection of risk and disease are now on the horizon. New neurobiological concepts have emerged, as they relate to

Stereotaxic brain surgery is a foundational neurosurgical technique used to deliver chemical, pharmacological, or genetic material to specific brain regions, or to precisely implant electrodes and stimulators. Accurate targeting depends on reliable identification of skull landmarks, particularly bregma and lambda. Here we present a photogrammetry-based automated small animal stereotaxic platform that uses a single, freely handheld camera, such as a standard smartphone, to generate high-resolution, polychromatic 3D skull reconstructions. Because photogrammetry requires no fixed overhead hardwar

Sporothrix schenckii is a fungus that can be found worldwide in decaying vegetative matter. It is the causative agent of sporotrichosis, a chronic infection of humans and animals. The infection is characterized by nodular lesions of the cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues with lymphatic involvement. Systemic spread may occur with bone, muscle, central nervous system, and pulmonary involvement. Diagnosis may be made based on clinical presentation and on laboratory identification of the etiologic agent.

Septic shock is a systemic inflammatory response syndrome associated with circulatory failure leading to organ failure with a 40% mortality rate. Early diagnosis and prognosis of septic shock are necessary for specific and timely treatment. However, no predictive biomarker is available. In recent years, improvements in proteomics-based mass spectrometry have improved the detection of such biomarkers. This approach can be performed on different samples such as tissue or biological fluids. Working directly from human samples is complicated owing to interindividual variability. Indeed, patients a

Among the parasites that affect pigs, Ascaris suum stands out for causing the greatest losses to livestock production systems. This parasite can be monitored during the slaughter of animals through the identification of "milk spots" or white patches on the liver caused by its larval migration. However, infection in the herd is usually subclinical, which is why the presence of this parasite in industrial pig production has been overlooked. The aim of the study was therefore to evaluate the occurrence of milk spots on the liver of animals slaughtered in the micro-region of Ponte Nova in the Zona
