Bloodstream infections remain a leading cause of death worldwide, despite advances in critical care and understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment strategies. No specific biomarkers or therapy are available for these conditions. Neutrophils play a critical role in controlling infection and it is suggested that their migration and antimicrobial activity are impaired during sepsis which contribute to the dysregulation of immune responses. Recent studies further demonstrated that interruption or reversal of the impaired migration and antimicrobial function of neutrophils improves the outc

The proliferation, migration and transdifferentiation of the remaining lens epithelial cells (LECs) after cataract surgery are a major cause of posterior capsular opacification (PCO). It has previously been reported that salmosin, a novel disintegrin, significantly inhibits solid tumor growth in mice by perturbation of tumor-specific angiogenesis via blocking alpha v beta 3 integrin expressed on vascular endothelial cells. In this study, the inhibitory function of salmosin in PCO was investigated and was found that salmosin inhibits the attachment of bovine LECs and rabbit lens cells (N/N1003A

Regulatory T (Treg) cells play a critical regulatory role in the immune system by suppressing excessive immune responses and maintaining immune balance. The effective migration of Treg cells is crucial for controlling the development and progression of inflammatory diseases. However, the mechanisms responsible for directing Treg cells into the inflammatory tissue remain incompletely elucidated. In this study, we identified BAF60b, a subunit of switch/sucrose nonfermentable (SWI/SNF) chromatin remodeling complexes, as a positive regulator of Treg cell migration that inhibits the progression of

Infection with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a major risk factor for the development of cancer and autoimmune disorders. The virus enters the body in the pharynx, but EBV causes disease in distant organs, including the gut and the brain. Here we show, using in vitro culture and mouse infection models, that EBV-infected B cells display features of homing cells. Infected B cells undergo migration following paracrine CCL4 release and CCR1 induction, while CCR1 deficiency inhibits migration and, unexpectedly, proliferation of infected B cells. Furthermore, migrating EBV-infected B cells undergo

Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are involved in restenosis of bypass grafts and cause artery graft occlusion. This study aimed to explore the role of Slit2 in phenotypic switching of VSMCs and its effect on restenosis of vascular conduits. An animal model of vascular graft restenosis (VGR) was produced in SD rats and assessed by echocardiography. The expression of Slit2 and Hif-1α was measured in vivo and in vitro. After Slit2 overexpression, the migration and proliferation of VSMCs were detected in vitro, and the restenosis rates and phenotype of VSMCs were tested in vivo. The arteries o

The human body is affected by environmental factors. The dynamic balance between the organism and its environment results from the influence of natural, anthropogenic and social aspects. The factors of exogenous origin determine development of adaptive changes. The present article summarises the mechanisms of animal venom toxins and homeostasis disruption in the body of mammals. The mechanisms underlying pathological changes are associated with shifts in biochemical reactions. Components of the immune, nervous and endocrine systems are key in the host defense and adaptation processes in respon

Balaenoptera acutorostrata, as a first-class protected animal in China, is listed in the IUCN catalogue and the CITES appendix. They migrate in various sea areas around the world. Driven by environmental change and human activities, it has become one of the most endangered taxa globally. To further understand the distribution and migratory corridors of B. acutorostrata, we assessed their suitable habitats by establishing a seasonal species combining distribution model based on utilized data records and seven environmental variables, as well as their seasonal migration corridor by circuit conne

In a study designed to assess the potential sensitizing and granulomagenic capacities of selected metallic salts, rabbits were inoculated intradermally with zirconium aluminum glycinate (ZAG), sodium zirconium lactate (NZL), aluminum chlorhydrate (ACH), BeSO 4, and ovalbumin (OVA) by single and multiple injections. Animals immunized with BeSO4 and with OVA developed delayed skin reactivity as well as antigen-specific alveolar macrophage migration inhibition. Neither single nor multiple injections of ZAG or ACH resulted in clear-cut positive skin reactivity, macrophage migration inhibitory fact

Cryptosporidium species are apicomplexan protozoans that are found worldwide. These parasites constitute a large risk to human and animal health. They cause self-limited diarrhea in immunocompetent hosts and a life-threatening disease in immunocompromised hosts. Interestingly, Cryptosporidium parvum has been related to digestive carcinogenesis in humans. Consistent with a potential tumorigenic role of this parasite, in an original reproducible animal model of chronic cryptosporidiosis based on dexamethasone-treated or untreated adult SCID mice, we formerly reported that C. parvum (strains of a

Non-physical barriers for migrating fish, such as effluent plumes discharged by sewage treatment plants (WWTPs), are hardly considered, and field studies on this topic are very scarce. The encounter with these plumes however may evoke behavioural responses in fish and could delay or (partially) block the migration. In this study, the behavioural responses of 40 acoustically-tagged silver eel (Anguilla anguilla) were monitored in situ, when confronting a WWTP effluent plume during their downstream migration in the canal Eems, the Netherlands. Their behavioural responses and the potential blocki

CASE DESCRIPTION: 2 juvenile (17 and 19 months of age) male American bison (Bison bison) were examined because of acute bilateral hind limb weakness and ataxia; 1 animal also had urinary incontinence.
TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Given the clinical signs and rapid deterioration in the condition of these 2 animals, obtaining a definitive diagnosis was considered essential to minimizing the risk of disease in the remaining bison herd and among other animals at the facility. Therefore, both affected animals were euthanized. At necropsy, no gross abnormalities were seen. Histologic examination of secti

OBJECTIVE: Chronic nonhealing wounds are a major health problem for patients in the United States and worldwide. Diabetes and ischemia are two major risk factors behind impaired healing of chronic lower extremity wounds. Poly-ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) is found to be overactivated with both ischemic and diabetic conditions. This study seeks a better understanding of the role of PARP in ischemic and diabetic wound healing, with a specific focus on angiogenesis and vasculogenesis.
METHODS: Ischemic and diabetic wounds were created in FVB/NJ mice and an in vitro scratch wound model. PARP inhib

Recent work has demonstrated that self-repair in the adult brain can be augmented by the infusion of growth factors to activate endogenous neural precursor cells that contribute to new tissue formation and functional recovery in a model of stroke. Using both a genetic model and drug treatment, we demonstrate that immunosuppression mimics the effects of growth factor activation, including tissue regeneration, neural precursor cell migration and functional recovery following ischemic injury. In the absence of growth factor treatment, mice with a functional immune system develop a prominent cavit

The transplantation of neural precursor cells (NPCs) is known to be a promising approach to ameliorating behavioral deficits after stroke in a rodent model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo). Previous studies have shown that transplanted NPCs migrate toward the infarct region, survive and differentiate into mature neurons to some extent. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics of NPC migration following transplantation into stroke animals have yet to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the fates of human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived NPCs (ENStem-A) for 8 weeks following tr

The L1 cell adhesion molecule plays an essential role in neural development and repair. It is not only a 'lock and key' recognition molecule, but an important signal transducer that stimulates regenerative-beneficial cellular functions such as neurite outgrowth, neuronal cell migration, survival, myelination, and synapse formation. Triggering L1 functions after neurotrauma improves functional recovery. In addition, loss-of-function mutations in the L1 gene lead to the L1 syndrome, a rare, X-linked neurodevelopmental disorder with an incidence of approximately 1:30,000 in newborn males. To use

Sea urchin embryos have been one of model organisms to investigate cellular behaviors because of their simple cell composition and transparent body. They also give us an opportunity to investigate molecular functions of human proteins of interest that are conserved in sea urchin. Here we report that human disease-associated extracellular matrix orthologues ECM3 and QBRICK are necessary for mesenchymal cell migration during sea urchin embryogenesis. Immunofluorescence has visualized the colocalization of QBRICK and ECM3 on both apical and basal surface of ectoderm. On the basal surface, QBRICK

Anemia or polycythemia was induced in male rats. These males were conjugated with healthy, untreated female litter mates by FANG'S method of aortic parabiosis that resulted in complete cross circulation of blood between the two animals. The sex chromosomes of cells in erythropoiesis in various hemopoietic organs were examined in the treated male animals. The anemic parabionts indicated sharp increases in chimerical rates with erythroid marrows being evident. Polycythemic parabionts indicated marked decreases in chimerical rates with evidence of myeloid marrows. These findings suggested that th

Hartley strain guinea pigs were sensitized with 0.5 ml of concentrated cell-free Actinomyces viscosus culture supernatant fluids mixed with Freund complete adjuvant. Fourteen to 16 days later the animals were challenged by intradermal injection with 0.1 ml of the culture supernatant, and the reactions were observed at 4, 8, 16, 24, and 48 h. Peritoneal exudate cells from sensitized animals were used for determination of migration inhibition factor, and guinea pig peripheral blood served as a source of cells for determining the induction of mitogenesis by antigenic material. Skin responses were

Obstacles encountered by downstream migrating European eels during their spawning migration are among the primary causes of their population decline. River regulation and hydrotechnical infrastructure play a crucial role in this process. Fish reaching migration barriers often interrupt their journey, while those passing through hydroelectric turbines frequently suffer fatal injuries. Using acoustic telemetry, the downstream migration of silver eels from a large lake complex in northern Poland was tracked. Along their route, the fish encountered small hydropower plant (SHP) equipped with Kaplan

Space weather, including solar storms, can impact Earth by disturbing the geomagnetic field. Despite the known dependence of birds and other animals on geomagnetic cues for successful seasonal migrations, the potential effects of space weather on organisms that use Earth's magnetic field for navigation have received little study. We tested whether space weather geomagnetic disturbances are associated with disruptions to bird migration at a macroecological scale. We leveraged long-term radar data to characterize the nightly migration dynamics of the nocturnally migrating North American avifauna
