Selectivity of SO2 and H2S removal by ethanol-treated calcined eggshell at low temperature.

Eggshell is a food waste produced worldwide in substantial amount with very limited recycling activity. In this study, the potential of ethanol-treated calcined eggshell was tested as sorbent for SO2 and H2S. Three variables were selected in the preparation of sorbents via response surface methodology (RSM), i.e., concentration of ethanol in water (50%, 70%, 90%), reaction temperature (20 °C, 40 °C, 60 °C), and contact time (30, 60, 90 min). Central composite design (CCD) was used to develop a quadratic model to correlate the operating variables with the adsorption capacity. Analysis of varian

A critical evaluation of the utility of eggshells for estimating mercury concentrations in avian eggs.

Eggshells are a potential tool for nonlethally sampling contaminant concentrations in bird eggs, yet few studies have examined their utility to represent mercury exposure. We assessed mercury concentrations in eggshell components for 23 bird species and determined whether they correlated with total mercury (THg) in egg contents. We designed a multi-experiment analysis to examine how THg is partitioned into eggshell components, specifically hardened eggshells, material adhered to the eggshells, and inner eggshell membranes. The THg concentrations in eggshells were much lower than in egg content

A Comparative Experimental and Computational Study on the Nature of the Pangolin-CoV and COVID-19 Omicron.

The relationship between pangolin-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 has been a subject of debate. Further evidence of a special relationship between the two viruses can be found by the fact that all known COVID-19 viruses have an abnormally hard outer shell (low M disorder, i.e., low content of intrinsically disordered residues in the membrane (M) protein) that so far has been found in CoVs associated with burrowing animals, such as rabbits and pangolins, in which transmission involves virus remaining in buried feces for a long time. While a hard outer shell is necessary for viral survival, a harder inner sh

Attractive and repulsive couplings between circadian pacemaker neurons promote entrainment to light-dark cycles with after-effect.

The mammalian circadian pacemaker, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), comprises a core region that receives light signals from the retina and a shell region that outputs pacemaking rhythms to peripheral tissues. The free-running period (FRP) of animals in constant darkness (DD) correlates with the period of the preceding LD cycle, a phenomenon known as after-effect. To elucidate the mechanisms underlying robust entrainment and after-effect, we analyzed phase oscillator models incorporating attractive and repulsive couplings that respectively decrease or increase phase differences between oscil

Compartmental neuronal degeneration in the ventral striatum induced by status epilepticus in young rats' brain in comparison with adults.

According to experimental and clinical studies, status epilepticus (SE) causes neurodegenerative morphological changes not only in the hippocampus and other limbic structures, it also affects the thalamus and the neocortex. In addition, several studies reported atrophy, metabolic changes, and neuronal degeneration in the dorsal striatum. The literature lacks studies investigating potential neuronal damage in the ventral component of the striatopallidal complex (ventral striatum [VS] and ventral pallidum) in SE experimentations. To better understand the development of neuronal damage in the str

Effect of ambient temperature on serotonin, norepinephrine, and epinephrine contents in the pineal-paraphyseal complex of the soft-shelled turtle (Lissemys punctata punctata).

The aim of the present investigation was to ascertain the influence of ambient temperature on serotonin, norepinephrine, and epinephrine contents in the pineal-paraphyseal complex of soft-shelled turtles. Turtles were exposed to low (10 degrees) and high (32 degrees) temperatures for 7 days in an incubator with the same photoperiod (12L:12D). Control animals were also kept in the same incubator at 25 degrees for similar duration with the same photoperiod. The findings revealed that ambient temperatures significantly altered serotonin, norepinephrine, and epinephrine content in the pineal-parap

Distinctive Neuroanatomic Regions Involved in Cocaine-Induced Behavioral Sensitization in Mice.

The present study aimed to characterize the phenomenon of behavioral sensitization to cocaine and to identify neuroanatomical structures involved in the induction and expression phases of this phenomenon. For this, in experiment 1 (induction phase), mice were treated with saline or cocaine every second day for 15 days (conditioning period), in the open-field or in their home-cages. In experiment 2 (expression phase), the same protocol was followed, except that after the conditioning period the animals were not manipulated for 10 days, and after this interval, animals were challenged with cocai

Isolation, identification and characterization of Aeromonas jandaei from diseased Chinese soft-shell turtles.

Aeromonas jandaei is a gram-negative bacterium commonly found in aquatic environments and can induce illnesses in amphibians, reptiles and aquatic animals. In this study, a strain of bacteria was isolated from the diseased Chinese soft-shell turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis), then named strain JDP-FX. This isolate was identified as A. jandaei after analysis of morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics, as well as 16S rRNA and gyrB gene sequences. Virulence genetic testing further detected temperature-sensitive protease (eprCAI), type III secretion system (TTSS) (ascv), nuclease (

Habitat rather than phylogeny may explain exoskeleton composition of three common land crabs from Christmas Island.

Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean hosts large populations of land crabs, including the gecarcinids Gecarcoidea natalis and Tuerkayana celeste and the grapsid Geograpsis grayi. All three have transitioned into terrestrial habitats via marine environments, but through different evolutionary routes, and with different life history traits. These species provide an opportunity to investigate the incorporation of chitin, protein and minerals (particularly calcium and magnesium carbonates) into the arthropod exoskeleton given their shared terrestrial transition, but different evolutionary historie

Dead Matter, Living Machines: Repurposing Crustaceans' Abdomen Exoskeleton for Bio-Hybrid Robots.

Bio-hybrid robots utilize living organisms for robot design, however, their use of living bodies makes maintenance, control, and fabrication of robot challenging. As an alternative, exoskeletons stand out for retaining mobility after the organism's death, making them an accessible candidate. In particular, crustacean exoskeletons, often discarded as food waste, provide both structural strength and flexibility from their segmented rigid shell. By repurposing dead animals' part from bio-waste, a sustainable cyclic design process is proposed in which materials can be recycled and adapted for new

Genome of the enigmatic watering-pot shell and morphological adaptations for anchoring in sediment.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we present the first chromosome-scale genome of Verpa penis (Linnaeus, 1758), and the first for the bivalve clade Anomalodesmata. The present study has two separate foci. Primarily, we provide the genetic resource to bridge further studies from genome to phenome and propose hypotheses to guide future empirical investigations. Secondarily, based on morphology, we outline a conceptual exploration to address their adaptation. Watering-pot shells have been called "the weirdest bivalves" for their fused tubular shell resembling the spout of a watering can. This adventitio

In Vitro and In Vivo Bone Regeneration Assessment of Titanium-Doped Waste Eggshell-Derived Hydroxyapatite in the Animal Model.

In this work, a titanium-doped hydroxyapatite (HAp) scaffold was produced from two different sources (natural eggshell and laboratory-grade reagents) to compare the efficacy of natural and synthetic resources of HAp materials on new bone regeneration. This comparative study also reports the effect of Ti doping on the physical, mechanical, and in vitro as well as in vivo biological properties of the HAp scaffold. Pellets were prepared in the conventional powder metallurgy route, compacted, and sintered at 900 °C, showing sufficient porosity for bony ingrowth. The physical-mechanical characteriz

Improvement of eggshell quality by dietary N-carbamylglutamate supplementation in laying chickens.

Egg quality defects seriously reduce the quality grade and increase egg breakage in egg marketing activities. In this study, the effect of N-carbamylglutamate (NCG) on eggshell quality was investigated by evaluating calcium absorption and calcification in laying hens. A total of 30 newly hatched female Hy-Line chicks were randomly assigned to the control group (basal diet) and treatment group (basal diet supplemented with 1% NCG). At 25 wk, eggs from each group were obtained to assess egg quality parameters. Blood samples were collected for analysis of mineral, hormone, and amino acids levels

Sensitivity of pteropod calcification to multi stressor variability in coastal habitats.

Comprehensive understanding of environmental multiple stressors on calcification in marine calcifiers remains an important topic of study, especially under ocean global change associated with multiple stressors. We explore the impact of multiple stressor on pteropod calcification in the southern Salish Sea (Washington, U.S.), a coastal estuarine system that exhibits a high degree of spatial and temporal variability in multiple environmental parameters across sampling locations. We hypothesized that such variability is associated with differences in pteropod calcification. Shell thickness and s

Biomineral crystallographic preferred orientation in Solenogastres molluscs (Aplacophora) is controlled by organic templating.

Aplacophoran molluscs are shell-less and have a worm-like body which is covered by biomineralized sclerites. We investigated sclerite crystallography and the sclerite mosaic of the Solenogastres species Dorymenia sarsii, Anamenia gorgonophila, and Simrothiella margaritacea with electron-backscattered-diffraction (EBSD), laser-confocal-microscopy and FE-SEM imaging. The soft tissue of the molluscs is covered by spicule-shaped, aragonitic sclerites. These are sub-parallel to the soft body of the organism. We find, for all three species, that individual sclerites are untwinned aragonite single cr

Physical and Chemical Interactions with Conspecifics Mediate Sex Change in a Protandrous Gastropod Crepidula fornicata.

The protandrous marine snail Crepidula fornicata has been a theoretical and empirical model for studies of sex change for many decades. We investigated the social conditions under which sex change occurs in this species by manipulating physical and chemical contact with conspecifics. Male snails were either in physical and chemical contact with females or in chemical contact with, but physically isolated from, females. Males were tested both with living females and with empty, sterilized shells. Males that were physically touching a living female were less likely to change sex than the isolate

Cognitive flexibility in a Tanganyikan bower-building cichlid, Aulonocranus dewindti.

Cognitive flexibility, the ability to modify one's decision rules to adapt to a new situation, has been extensively studied in many species. In fish, though, data on cognitive flexibility are scarce, especially in the wild. We studied a lekking species of cichlid fish in Lake Tanganyika, Aulonocranus dewindti. Males create sand bowers as spawning sites and maintain them by removing any objects falling into it. In the first part of our experiment, we investigated the existence of spontaneous decision rules for the maintenance of the bowers. We showed that if a snail shell and a stone are placed

A Novel CaMKII Inhibitory Peptide Blocks Relapse to Morphine Seeking by Influencing Synaptic Plasticity in the Nucleus Accumbens Shell.

Drugs of abuse cause enduring functional disorders in the brain reward circuits, leading to cravings and compulsive behavior. Although people may rehabilitate by detoxification, there is a high risk of relapse. Therefore, it is crucial to illuminate the mechanisms of relapse and explore the therapeutic strategies for prevention. In this research, by using an animal model of morphine self-administration in rats and a whole-cell patch-clamp in brain slices, we found changes in synaptic plasticity in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) shell were involved in the relapse to morphine-seeking behavior. Isolation and characterization of 2-nitroimidazole produced by Streptomyces species as an inhibitor of both carbonic anhydrase and shell formation in the barnacle Balanus amphitrite.

Carbonic anhydrase is thought to be involved in the process of calcium carbonate deposition in calcified tissues of many organisms. Barnacles form hard calcified shells for protection against predation, and represent a class of marine-fouling animals. In order to inhibit barnacle growth by inhibiting shell formation, we searched for carbonic anhydrase inhibitors from microbial secondary metabolites. A simple assay for assessing carbonic-anhydrase-inhibiting activity was developed. Screening of many microorganisms isolated from soil with this assay resulted in a microbial strain that produced a

Gene transfer of GLT-1, a glutamate transporter, into the nucleus accumbens shell attenuates methamphetamine- and morphine-induced conditioned place preference in rats.

Several lines of evidence have suggested that the glutamatergic system in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) plays an important role in the conditioned rewarding effect of drugs of abuse. In addition, it is recognized that extracellular glutamate is rapidly removed from the synaptic cleft by Na+-dependent glutamate transporters in neurons and glial cells, thereby maintaining physiological levels of glutamate. We previously reported that activation of glutamate uptake by a glutamate transporter activator attenuated the acquisition of conditioned place preference induced by methamphetamine and morphine
