Refining animal welfare of wild boar (Sus scrofa) corral-style traps through behavioral and pathological investigations.

Wild boar trapping has been used as a management tool to control wild boar populations. However, it is increasingly criticized due to animal welfare concerns. While cortisol levels have been used to assess trap-related stress in wild boar, data on trap-related injuries and behavioral data are scarce. We aimed to evaluate three different corral-style traps for wild boar according to available mammal trapping standards to investigate and refine animal welfare in wild boar trapping. We examined 138 wild boars captured and killed by head shot in 27 capture events. Traps were closed by remote contr

Interventions to reduce meat consumption by appealing to animal welfare: Meta-analysis and evidence-based recommendations.

Reducing meat consumption may improve human health, curb environmental damage, and limit the large-scale suffering of animals raised in factory farms. Most attention to reducing consumption has focused on restructuring environments where foods are chosen or on making health or environmental appeals. However, psychological theory suggests that interventions appealing to animal welfare concerns might operate on distinct, potent pathways. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating the effectiveness of these interventions. We searched eight academic databases and extensively sea

Animal welfare and zoonosis risk: anti-Trichinella antibodies in breeding pigs farmed under controlled housing conditions.

BACKGROUND: Domesticated pigs are the main source of Trichinella sp. infections for humans, particularly when reared in backyards or free-ranging. In temperate areas of southern Europe, most pigs are farmed under controlled housing conditions, but sows and sometimes fattening pigs have access to outdoors to improve animal welfare. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether outdoor access of breeding pigs farmed under controlled housing conditions can represent a risk for Trichinella sp. transmission when the farm is located in an agricultural area interspersed with wooded areas an

Bridging Gaps in Panthera leo Ethograms: A Systematic Review and Adaptable Model for Animal Welfare Research.

Lions (Panthera leo) are keystone predators and an iconic species for wildlife conservation. Understanding their behaviour is critical for effective conservation strategies and for ensuring animal welfare in human-managed environments. Ethograms-systematic descriptions of behavioural repertoires-are essential tools for observing, recording, and analysing animal behaviour. Although numerous ethograms have been developed for lions, the lack of standardization and variability in content hinder comparative research and welfare assessment. This study aimed to develop a comprehensive ethogram for li

Assessing animal welfare impacts of cosmetic manipulations in dromedary camels: insights from oxidative and inflammatory biomarkers.

Cosmetic alterations in camels, such as lip binding, hormone and filler injections, and lip stretching, are common at beauty festivals and severely compromise animal welfare. This study aimed to quantify their physiological effects by analyzing inflammation and oxidative stress biomarkers. A total of 12,385 dromedary camels were examined during the 7th King Abdulaziz Camel Festival (KACF). Camels with identified tampering were classified into five groups: lip binding (LBC), hormone injection (HIC), lip stretching (LSC), perinasal filler injection (PFIC), and lip filler injection (LFIC), with 2

Serial blood collection in anaesthetised rats: Enhancing animal welfare without the need for jugular vein catheterisation.

Serial blood collection is a key requirement for pharmacological and toxicological studies in rodents, but existing approaches such as tail vein, retro-orbital, or catheter-based sampling are constrained by limited sample volume, variability, and welfare concerns. We developed a percutaneous technique for serial blood sampling from the external jugular vein in male Wistar rats under isoflurane anaesthesia. The method was evaluated over 14 days by monitoring body weight, behaviour, haematological and clinical chemistry parameters in a preclinical safety study at a No-Observable-Adverse-Effect-L

Animal welfare assessment after controlled cortical impact in CD-1 mice - A model of posttraumatic epilepsy.

The ethical use of laboratory animals requires that the benefits of an experimental study are carefully weighed against potential harm to the animals. In traumatic brain injury (TBI) research, ethical concerns are especially relevant to severe TBI, after which animals may experience suffering, depending on the implementation of refinement measures such as (1) postsurgical analgesia during the initial period following TBI and (2) humane endpoints. However, despite the frequent use of rodent models such as fluid percussion injury (FPI) and controlled cortical impact (CCI) in rats or mice, there

Ivermectin (IVM) Possible Side Activities and Implications in Antimicrobial Resistance and Animal Welfare: The Authors' Perspective.

Ivermectin has a wide number of many diverse functions. Certainly, it is irreplaceable for the treatment of parasitic pathologies in both human and veterinary medicine, and the latter represents the major field of its application. It has been called the "drug for the world's poor" because of its role as a saviour for those living on the margins of society, in underdeveloped areas afflicted by devastating and debilitating diseases, such as Onchocerciasis and Lymphatic filariasis. It showed huge, unexpected potential as an antibacterial (Chlamydia trachomatis and mycobacteria), and it has antivi

Animal Welfare Consequences of Organic Boar Fattening and Occurrence of Boar Taint on Five Commercial Farms.

The welfare of male fattening pigs may be improved by refraining from castration, but may be compromised, in turn, by harmful social behaviour in groups of boars. In addition, boar taint may be problematic. This study aimed to evaluate these potential problems in boar fattening under commercial organic conditions. In total, 625 boars were compared with 433 barrows and 83 gilts regarding their social behaviour, lesions and lameness at 80 kg, before and after split marketing. The mixed-model analysis showed that significantly more short agonistic interactions, fights and mounting behaviours were

Animal welfare and sustainability in pork production: a pilot study of farmer and veterinarian perspectives in North America.

BACKGROUND: The swine industry is under increasing pressure to adopt meaningful animal welfare improvement strategies, yet implementation remains challenging due to competing operational demands and the economic costs associated with many welfare interventions in a pork market that is often volatile. Although good animal welfare is known to enhance productivity, profitability, and long-term sustainability, clearer stakeholder understanding of these relationships is needed to support industry decision making for broader adoption of welfare strategies. This pilot study examined how pork industry

Job satisfaction and animal welfare at slaughter: A survey of Official Veterinarians in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.

In the UK and the Republic of Ireland, Official Veterinarians (OVs) are employed by the Food Standards Agency and the Food Safety Authority, respectively, as legal authorities for both animal welfare and food safety. However, little is known about job satisfaction in this profession which has the potential to impact professionals' well-being and performance. Moreover, despite animal welfare issues being a reality that OVs witness, we do not yet understand how OVs perceive these issues at slaughter or whether this impacts job satisfaction. We assessed OVs' perceptions on job satisfaction and vi

Working animal welfare and their multidimensional roles on livelihood improvement in Ethiopia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Working animals have a crucial socio-economic role to play for many low-income communities. One such example is in Ethiopia where virtually all the draught power for agricultural production derives from working animals. However, despite this, the welfare status of working animals in this country remains poor. Hence, a clear understanding of the major welfare problems faced by working animals is key to helping improve their welfare status and to maximise their economic contribution. This systematic literature review encompasses 28 studies published between 2010-2024, that address the role of wo

The beauty of the beast: Suggestions to curb the excesses of dog breeding and restore animal welfare - Invited review.

Dog. Specifically created to save its master's life. - (The dog is the ideal) Friend of man, (because it is his devoted slave) (source: Gustave Flaubert, Dictionnaire des Idées Reçues). But is man the best friend of the dog? This question is legitimate when we consider living situations to which modern domestic dogs are exposed. They often do not satisfy basic animal needs. In this narrative review, the author revisits the history of the dog's presence alongside humans, in the light of current knowledge. The modern dog (breed standards and their interests in canine research) and its breeding s

An economic case study of the control of dog-mediated rabies by an animal welfare organisation in Jaipur, India.

A global strategic plan for the elimination of dog-mediated human rabies deaths by 2030 was announced in 2018. The cost-effectiveness of annual mass dog vaccination programmes, as a control and elimination method, has been advocated on many occasions. Complementary methods, such as animal birth control (ABC) activities, have received less attention. This paper provides a case-study of a programme operated by Help in Suffering (HIS) in Jaipur, India from 1994/95 until 2016/17 comprising both ABC and additional vaccination-only activities. The availability of cost data alongside information on d

Students' opinions on welfare and ethics issues for companion animals in Australian and New Zealand veterinary schools.

OBJECTIVE: To determine what veterinary students in Australia and New Zealand consider important competences in companion animal welfare and ethics (AWE) required on their first day of practice, and to explore how their priorities relate to gender and stage of study. METHODS: Undergraduate students at all veterinary schools in Australia and New Zealand were sent an online survey. A subset of questions required participants to rank the importance of preselected AWE topics pertaining to companion animals. Data were analysed to determine differences in the way students of different gender or aca

The Impact of Environmental, Nutritional, and Animal Welfare Labeling of Plant-Based Cream Cheese on Consumer Perception.

Plant-based alternatives (PBAs) to dairy products are increasingly positioned as nutritionally beneficial, sustainable, and ethical food choices; however, consumer acceptance of PBAs remains limited, partly due to sensory challenges and uncertainty surrounding effective product communication strategies. This study investigated the influence of environmental, nutritional, and animal welfare labeling on consumer perception of plant-based cream cheese (PBCC). A total of 114 consumers evaluated the same commercially available PBCC under four labeling conditions: blinded (control) and with statemen

Antibiotic Residues in Milk as a Consequence of Mastitis Treatment: Balancing Animal Welfare and One Health Risks.

Bovine mastitis is a prevalent infectious disease in dairy cattle, causing inflammation, pain, reduced milk yield, and economic losses. Antibiotic therapy is the mainstay of treatment, yet irresponsible use can lead to the presence of antibiotic residues in milk and contribute to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), posing significant risks to public health and food safety. This review aims to provide a comprehensive synthesis of current knowledge on mastitis management, antibiotic use and resulting residues in milk, their public health and environmental impacts, and alternative st

Analysis of exotic pathogens found in a large group of imported dogs following an animal welfare investigation.

BACKGROUND: Increased dog relocation can cause dissemination of pathogen and vector populations, and this is being recognised in countries across Northern Europe, including the UK. Data regarding the prevalence of exotic infections in dogs entering the UK would be beneficial to veterinarians to help assess pets entering the UK from abroad and to help calculate the risk of establishment of novel pathogens. This study reports the findings from a group of imported dogs that was seized as part of a Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA)-led animal welfare investigation and

Correlation of animal-based parameters with environment-based parameters in an on-farm welfare assessment of growing pigs.

Nine pig farms were evaluated for the welfare quality in Korea using animal- and environment-based parameters (particularly air quality parameters) during the winter of 2013. The Welfare Quality® (WQ®) protocol consists of 12 criteria within four principles. The WQ® protocol classifies farms into four categories ranging from 'excellent' to 'not classified'. Each of these criteria has specific measures for calculating scores. Calculations for the welfare scores were conducted online using the calculation model in the WQ® protocol. Environment-based parameters like microclimate (i.e., temperatur
