Neuronal correlates of amblyopia in the visual cortex of macaque monkeys with experimental strabismus and anisometropia.

Amblyopia is a developmental disorder of pattern vision. After surgical creation of esotropic strabismus in the first weeks of life or after wearing -10 diopter contact lenses in one eye to simulate anisometropia during the first months of life, macaques often develop amblyopia. We studied the response properties of visual cortex neurons in six amblyopic macaques; three monkeys were anisometropic, and three were strabismic. In all monkeys, cortical binocularity was reduced. In anisometropes, the amblyopic eye influenced a relatively small proportion of cortical neurons; in strabismics, the inf

Long-Term Follow-Up of Helicopter Pilots Using Monocular Helmet Displays Shows No Anisometropia.

INTRODUCTION: Pilots of multiple rotary-wing platforms of the Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force operate with monocular helmet-mounted displays (HMDs) that project flight or weapon symbology over the right eye. In particular, AH-64 Apache pilots continuously use the Integrated Helmet and Display Sight System, whereas AS532 Cougar pilots use a monocular HMD mainly during degraded visual environments. Although these systems are calibrated to project imagery at optical infinity, incorrect calibration may induce accommodation. There is concern that prolonged monocular accommodation could lead t

Axial Length-Driven Anisometropia in Cornea Plana Spectrum with Alternating Exotropia: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Cornea plana is a rare congenital corneal disorder characterised by marked corneal flattening, often with microcornea and shallow anterior chambers. It is classically associated with high hyperopia and accommodative esotropia. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 35-year-old woman with a cornea plana spectrum phenotype in whom cycloplegic refraction revealed marked anisometropia (hyperopic astigmatism in the right eye and myopic astigmatism in the left eye) together with an alternating exotropia. Swept-source optical biometry demonstrated interocular axial length asymmetry, plausibly

Missense mutation in SLIT2 associated with congenital myopia, anisometropia, connective tissue abnormalities, and obesity.

BACKGROUND: SLIT2 is a protein ligand for the Roundabout (ROBO) receptor and was found to play a major role in repulsive midline axon guidance in central nervous system development. Based on studies utilizing knockout models, it has been postulated that SLIT2 is important for preventing inappropriate axonal routing during mammalian optic chiasm development. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: Here, we report a case of congenital myopia, anisometropia, and obesity in a patient with a SLIT2 point mutation. Examination of the patient's skin biopsy revealed abnormalities in elastin and collagen fibri

Amblyopia induced by anisometropia without shrinkage of ocular dominance columns in human striate cortex.

Amblyopia can be induced by opacity of the ocular media (e.g., cataract), misalignment of the ocular axes (strabismus), or unequal refractive error in the eyes (anisometropia). Experiments in monkeys have shown that early monocular eyelid suture, a model of amblyopia caused by cataract, results in shrinkage of the eye's ocular dominance columns in striate cortex. This reduction of the geniculocortical projection from the deprived eye has been thought to explain in part the mechanism of amblyopia. We labeled the ocular dominance columns in monkeys with amblyopia by using cytochrome oxidase hist
