Higher-order electrical magnetochiral anisotropy effect in high-temperature cuprate superconductors.

While non-trivial spin-orbit coupling (SOC) was predicted early in high-temperature cuprate superconductors (HTCS), its precise role and microscopic consequences remain unresolved. This challenge is primarily hindered by the lack of suitable detection methods. Here we report a significant electrical magnetochiral anisotropy (EMCA) in an archetypal high-temperature cuprate superconductor NdBa2Cu3O7-δ, which is ascribed to the SOC effect under inversion and time-reversal symmetry violations in HTCS. Notably, a peculiar angular dependence of EMCA on the magnetic field orientation is observed, whe

Reversible Microadhesives with Good Adhesion Anisotropy via Dual-Gradient Modulus Constructing.

Bioinspired microadhesives can generate strong adhesion at the interface through van der Waals forces, demonstrating promising potential applications across various fields. However, the inherent conflicts between microstructural stability and compliance, as well as strong adhesion and easy detachment, significantly hinder the development and practical applications of microadhesives. In this work, wedged microadhesives (WMs) of dual-gradient modulus are fabricated via magnetically assisted soft-molding. The dual-gradient modulus WMs exhibit a maximum shear adhesion performance of 4.9 N cm-2 and

Unveiling the electron-phonon coupling anisotropy in 2D covalent organic frameworks.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging organic semiconductors with potential for energy conversion and storage. However, their electronic structure and electron-phonon interactions remain poorly understood. This issue is particularly important in 2D COFs, where covalent and van der Waals interactions along orthogonal directions manifest intrinsic anisotropy. In this work, six 2D COFs with varied bond linkages, stacking patterns, and side-group conjugation were synthesized to investigate their electron-phonon interaction properties. The results show that electron-phonon coupling (EPC)

Valley polarization and magnetic anisotropy of two-dimensional Ni2Cl3I3/MoSe2 heterostructures.

Two-dimensional (2D) Janus trihalides have attracted widespread attention due to their potential applications in spintronics. In this work, the valley polarization of MoSe2 at the K' and K points can be modulated by Ni2Cl3I3, a new 2D Janus trihalide. The Ni2Cl3I3/MoSe2 heterostructure has an in-plane magnetic anisotropy energy (IMA) and is characterized by three distinct electronic structures: metallic, semiconducting, and half-metallic. It is noted that the semiconducting state features a band gap of 0.07 eV. When spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is considered, valley polarization is exhibited in t

Prediction of meningioma subtypes using qualitative assessment of fractional anisotropy maps.

AIM: In this study, we explore the role of FA maps in predicting the histopathological subtypes of meningioma using a qualitative ordinal scale and quantitative histogram features. MATERIAL & METHODS: Retrospective analysis of grey-scale FA maps of 96 cases of meningioma was done by two observers blinded to the histopathological diagnosis. An ordinal scale of 1-4 was used to grade the degree of FA in each lesion. Histogram features were calculated from the region of interest and statistical analysis was carried out for discriminating between the above-mentioned qualitative gradings. RESULTS:

Small Charging Energies and g-Factor Anisotropy in PbTe Quantum Dots.

PbTe is a semiconductor with promising properties for topological quantum computing applications. Here, we characterize electron quantum dots in PbTe nanowires selectively grown on InP. Charge stability diagrams at zero magnetic field reveal large even-odd spacing between Coulomb blockade peaks, charging energies below 140 μeV and Kondo peaks in odd Coulomb diamonds. We attribute the large even-odd spacing to the large dielectric constant and small effective electron mass of PbTe. By studying the Zeeman-induced level and Kondo splitting in finite magnetic fields, we extract the electron g-fact

Anisotropy-induced phase transitions in an intrinsic half-Chern insulator Ni2I2.

One crucial target of research on spintronics is to achieve flexibly tunable and highly efficient spin-polarized electronic current. In this work, by using first-principles calculations and topological characterization theories, we propose an intrinsic half-Chern insulator (HCI) in a Ni2I2 monolayer, which possesses 100% spin-polarized topologically nontrivial edge states, distinct from ordinary Chern insulators. Its band gap is formed due to the lifting of the double degeneracy of non-Dirac bands composed of Ni dxz/dyz orbitals. The HCI becomes a half semiconductor (HS) or a combined state of

Experimental Study on Hydraulic Fracturing of Bedding Shale Considering Anisotropy Effects.

The bedding plane formed by sedimentation makes shale anisotropic. To clarify the influence of bedding on the hydraulic fracturing of shale, the fracture characteristics of bedding shale were first clarified by conducting a hydraulic fracturing experiment on large-scale shale samples with different bedding angles. Subsequently, combined with the experimental results, based on the theory of elasticity, a new fracture initiation criterion for shale hydraulic fracturing considering its anisotropic characteristics was established. The influence of the bedding angle on the hydraulic fracture initia

Magnetoelectric Multiferroicity and Magnetic Anisotropy in Guanidinium Copper(II) Formate Crystal.

Hybrid metal-organic compounds as relatively new and prosperous magnetoelectric multiferroics provide opportunities to improve the polarization, magnetization and magneto-electric coupling at the same time, which usually have some limitations in the common type-I and type-II multiferroics. In this work we investigate the crystal of guanidinium copper (II) formate [C(NH2)3]Cu(HCOO)3 and give novel insights concerning the structure, magnetic, electric and magneto-electric behaviour of this interesting material. Detailed analysis of crystal structure at 100 K is given. Magnetization points to the

Orientation anisotropy of quantitative MRI parameters in degenerated human articular cartilage.

Quantitative magnetic resonance (MR) relaxation parameters demonstrate varying sensitivity to the orientation of the ordered tissues in the magnetic field. In this study, the orientation dependence of multiple relaxation parameters was assessed in cadaveric human cartilage with varying degree of natural degeneration, and compared with biomechanical testing, histological scoring, and quantitative histology. Twelve patellar cartilage samples were imaged at 9.4 T MRI with multiple relaxation parameters, including T1 , T2 , CW - T1ρ , and adiabatic T1ρ , at three different orientations with respec

Magnetized joystick with dual-anisotropy for high-capacity wearable human-machine interactions.

One of the urgent demands for flexible and wearable sensors is to achieve single-channel, less-sensor, and multi-output for effective communications. However, expansion of signal capacity on a single interface often requires sensor arrays, which significantly increases the complexity in electrode layout and multiple device design. In this work, we developed a flexible magnetized joystick (FMJ) with structurally induced eigenfrequency anisotropy by applying laser cutting process to a raw magnetized cubic. Using an eigenfrequency-polarity dual-anisotropy addressing method, we show that single FM

Programming flow anisotropy in hydrodynamic metamaterials via series-parallel equivalent fluidic networks.

Precise microflow control underpins microfluidic technologies in precision medicine, yet conventional approaches rely on anisotropic materials or external fields, limiting fabrication simplicity and scalability. Unlike transformation-based or data-driven approaches, we demonstrate that flow anisotropy can be programmed through the layered organization of locally homogeneous, isotropic media via a series-parallel equivalent fluidic network (SPEFN) realized as single-medium metamaterials (SMMs). SPEFN provides an analytically invertible mapping from network topology to the macroscopic effective-

Colossal infrared nonlinear optical anisotropy in a 2D charge-transfer Mott insulator.

Mott insulators are a unique class of materials whose insulating state originates from strong electron-electron correlations: the interactions localize charge carriers, and the resulting on-site Coulomb repulsion opens a charge gap, fundamentally different from conventional insulators, making these systems an exceptional platform for exploring exotic physical phenomena. Significantly, the interplay between strong correlations and charge transfer not only stabilizes the antiferromagnetic ground state but also endows the material with enriched properties, particularly in optics. Herein, we demon

Proximity Induced Magnetic Anisotropy and Trefoil Fermiology in Monolayer FeCl2/Bi(111).

Interfaces between magnetic and non-magnetic materials play a crucial role in various magnetic heterostructures. The emergence of 2D van der Waals (vdW) magnets has introduced new opportunities for exploring proximity effects in vdW heterostructures. While the influence of magnetic layers on nearby non-magnetic materials has been widely studied, it remains unclear whether non-magnetic substrates can similarly modulate the intrinsic magnetic properties of 2D magnets, particularly their magnetic anisotropy. In this work, by analyzing X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra of an epitaxially gr

Gradient-Mass-Transfer Synthesis of 2D [Bi2CuO3]SO4 Crystals for Anisotropy Engineering.

The intrinsic physical anisotropy of low-symmetry materials makes them highly promising candidates for polarization-sensitive devices. However, their practical application remains constrained by the scarcity of single materials that can combine low symmetry with high performance. Here, we report a novel low-symmetry [Bi2CuO3]SO4 crystal with an insulating nature, designed to enable symmetry control over conventional high-performance semiconductors. We achieve controllable growth of layered [Bi2CuO3]SO4 nanosheets via a gradient-mass-transfer-assisted chemical vapor deposition method, with thic

Anisotropy-Driven Discovery of Rare-Earth-Free Magnets in Mo2FeB2-Type Borides.

Multifunctional materials are critically important for modern technologies. Magnets, especially those relevant to spintronic applications, are essential for energy-efficient data processing and advanced magnetic devices, while high-strength materials provide excellent mechanical and thermal stability. Mo2FeB2-type materials are well established for their superior strength and thermal properties, yet their magnetic behavior has remained largely theoretical, dominated by antiferromagnets and, more recently, predicted altermagnets. Building on our recent report of spin-glass phases exhibiting lar

Spatial Planarization Controls Optical Anisotropy for Efficient and Stable Blue-Emitting OLEDs.

In this study, we report a spatial planarization strategy for asymmetric Ir(III) complexes that simultaneously improves exciton stability and optical outcoupling in blue OLEDs. By incorporating bulky tert-butylcarbazole (tBuCz) units into tridentate N-heterocyclic carbene ligands, the molecular geometry is sterically confined into a more coplanar and anisotropic configuration. This structural planarization increases exciton binding energy and shortens the radiative lifetime, thereby stabilizing bound excitons against thermally activated dissociation while accelerating radiative exciton consump

Resonant magnetoelastic interaction and configurational anisotropy in diamond-shaped Ni80Fe20 nanodot lattices.

We investigate the magnetization dynamics of diamond-shaped Ni80Fe20 (permalloy) nanoelements patterned on a Si/SiO2 substrate using the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) technique. The periodic array supports both quantized spin-wave modes and laser-induced surface acoustic waves (SAWs), enabling the study of their mutual interaction within a single nanostructured platform. Three magnetic modes exhibiting pronounced two-fold configurational anisotropy are identified and analyzed with the support of micromagnetic simulations. The magnetic modes are controlled by geometric con

Anisotropy Thermal Properties of Electrically Insulating Thin Films and Sheets: A Review.

With the growing need for controlling heat dissipation in modern technologies, a comprehensive understanding of thermal transport in electrically insulating materials is essential. Electrically insulating thin films and sheets often exhibit anisotropy thermal conductivity across in-plane and cross-plane directions, either intrinsically, or through structural engineering. This anisotropy enables targeted heat dissipation, such as around sensitive components in modern electronics. This review summarizes the recent progress in enhancing the thermal conductivity of electrically insulating thin fil

Optomechanical Tuning of Second Harmonic Generation Anisotropy in Janus MoSSe/MoS2 Heterostructures.

Symmetry breaking in van der Waals materials enables the realization of quantum states and advanced device functionalities. Janus transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit distinctive nonlinear optical properties due to their broken out-of-plane mirror symmetry. However, the dynamic control of second harmonic generation (SHG) anisotropy and resonance behavior via optical excitation remains elusive. In this work, we investigate the SHG response of Janus MoSSe/MoS2 heterostructures with 2H and 3R stackings. We can tune the SHG response by varying the incident photon wavelength from 800 to
