AIDS education and prevention : official publication of the International Society for AIDS Education2006eng
The goal of this study was to describe HIV risk behaviors, perceptions, testing, and prevention exposure among urban American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). Interviewers administered a questionnaire to participants recruited through anonymous peer-referral sampling. Chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression were used to compare HIV testing by perception of risk and risk behavior status. Of 218 respondents with seronegative or unknown HIV status, 156 (72%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 66-78%) reported some HIV risk behavior: 57 (26%, 95% CI: 20-32%) high-risk behavior, and 99 (45%

BACKGROUND: Early human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) defection is essential for initiating treatment and partner-notification activities. Sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic attendees are at high risk for infection and should be made aware of their HIV status.
GOAL: To determine the characteristics associated with not receiving an HIV test result in an STD clinic setting.
STUDY DESIGN: Confidential HIV testing was offered to 6,705 persons attending four public STD clinics in Los Angeles who submitted blood for syphilis serology and were tested for HIV antibody in an unlinked HIV serosu

BACKGROUND: Across cancers, the decision to pursue genetic testing is influenced more by subjective than objective factors. However, skin cancer, which is more prevalent, visual, and multifactorial than many other malignancies, may offer different motivations for pursuing such testing.
OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to determine factors influencing the decision to receive genetic testing for skin cancer risk. A secondary objective was to assess the impact of priming with health questions on the decision to receive testing.
METHODS: We distributed anonymous online surveys through Resea

This study investigated the acceptability of rapid HIV testing among general practitioners (GP) and aimed to identify perceived barriers and needs in order to implement rapid testing in primary care settings. An anonymous questionnaire was distributed online to all members of the two largest Spanish scientific medical societies for family and community medicine. The study took place between 15 June 2012 and 31 October 2010. Completed questionnaires were returned by 1308 participants. The majority (90.8%) of respondents were GP. Among all respondents, 70.4% were aware of the existence of rapid

BACKGROUND: Voluntary HIV testing sites provide an opportunity to identify and counsel persons with herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection, thereby enhancing the prevention of HSV-2 and HIV infections. GOAL AND STUDY DESIGN: Using serologic specimens left over from HIV testing, we measured HSV-2 prevalence and incidence among persons who had repeatedly tested for HIV at anonymous counseling and testing sites in San Francisco during the period October 1997 through March 2000.
RESULTS: The prevalence of HSV-2 infection was 23.5% (n = 987) overall, 28.7% among women, and 24.1% among men w

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of HIV-1 infection in the general community by using a target population (antenatal patients) as an indicator of infection, to monitor any change in the prevalence of HIV infection in this population and provide baseline information on heterosexual spread of HIV infection into this low prevalence population.
PATIENTS AND DESIGN: Between January 1989 and January 1992, 4537 unlinked anonymous antenatal sera were tested in two study groups at Westmead Hospital. Repeatedly reactive sera were confirmed by western blot and other supplementary assays as approp

BACKGROUND: Little is known about how men who have sex with men (MSM) exposed to a sexually transmitted infection respond to receiving patient-delivered partner therapy (PDPT) or electronic partner notification postcards (e-cards).
METHODS: We anonymously surveyed MSM in a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic and a private medical practice. Three scenarios were presented in which participants had oral or anal sex with a new partner and were subsequently notified of a chlamydia or gonorrhea exposure and offered PDPT by the partner. A fourth scenario described partner notification via an a

In Sweden, voluntary testing for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)-antibodies has been given an important place in combating AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). To elicit the reasons why people seek voluntary testing on their own initiative outside general screening programmes, during a three-year period (1989-91) applicants at a major urban testing locale were asked to fill in an anonymous questionnaire, which was completed by 68.6 per cent (831/1,212) of those eligible. Of the 831 respondees (both men and women), 88.9 per cent cited recent casual sexual contact as the reason why they

Population-based research is enhanced by biological measures, but biological sampling raises complex ethical issues. The third British National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal-3) will estimate the population prevalence of five sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, human papillomavirus (HPV), HIV and Mycoplasma genitalium) in a probability sample aged 16-44 years. The present work describes the development of an ethical approach to urine testing for STIs, including the process of reaching consensus on whether to return results. T

INTRODUCTION: HIV testing remains central to epidemic control, but awareness of HIV status in Zimbabwe remains below UNAIDS targets. We evaluated a targeted HIV testing model using a risk-screening tool to triage clients for same-day provider-initiated HIV testing, while routing screen-negative clients to HIV self-testing.
METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods implementation evaluation across eight provinces from April 2021 to June 2022. Thirteen candidate screening questions were evaluated in 7825 clients and reduced to five domains for assessment of the final combined rule in 2116 complete-

INTRODUCTION: This study describes a convenient, anonymous, and private method to assess risk for hepatitis B and recommend vaccination for those determined to be at risk.
METHODS: We used an automated telephone interview and computerized risk assessment to inform callers of their hepatitis B risk status and direct those at risk for testing, counseling, and vaccination. The project's efficacy was compared to previously reported projects, and the expense was compared to estimates assuming universal vaccination.
RESULTS: This pilot project found that 63% of completed interviews indicated risk.

STUDY QUESTION: Are donor-conceived adults in Belgium interested in obtaining donor information, and do these interests vary based on their family backgrounds?
SUMMARY ANSWER: Donor-conceived adults express a significant interest in obtaining donor-related information, with the highest interest reported by offspring from heterosexual couples compared to those from lesbian couple-parented or single-parent families.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: In Belgium, sperm donation is mainly anonymous, but the rise of direct-to-consumer genetic testing challenges this anonymity.

Antenatal HIV screening policies throughout the British Isles were surveyed and results linked to data on HIV-infected pregnant women notified through the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Units offering HIV testing to all pregnant women were compared with those offering it only to women considered to be at risk, and in both situations fewer than 50% of infected women were identified as HIV infected for the first time in antenatal clinics. Based on laboratory reports of HIV infection in women of childbearing age, paediatric reports of children born to HIV positive women and un

In Switzerland and in the Federal Republic of Germany the reporting of HIV infections is based on an anonymous mandatory reporting system for laboratories. In Switzerland, physicians have to complete a questionnaire on the patient's clinical status and risk behaviour. To make a rough estimate of the prevalence of HIV infections in the general population at low risk, data on blood donations are used in both countries. In Switzerland, additional data with information on positive and negative test results have been obtained since 1985 from anonymous test sites. In both countries, the data do not

The objective was to evaluate the performance of Becton Dickinson's BD Probe Tec(TM) (BDPT) strand displacement amplification (SDA) test for the detection of Neisseria gonorrhoeae on urethral specimens from men with urethritis compared with conventional culture and to show that SDA improves the diagnostic yield of gonorrhoea infections (GC). Anonymized retrospective testing of stored urethral swab samples from men attending genitourinary services in East London was performed using SDA. The prevalence of GC culture positive infections in this sample was 20/152 (13%). The sensitivity, specificit

OBJECTIVES: Despite advances in antiretroviral therapy and biomedical HIV prevention, awareness of modern prevention strategies remains limited. Rapid HIV testing initiatives can support early diagnosis while providing an opportunity to assess prevention awareness and facilitate engagement with services.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional study of five free university-based rapid HIV testing events in Rome (Italy) between August and December 2025.
METHODS: Adults aged 18 years or older were offered rapid HIV testing and invited to complete an anonymous self-administered questionnai

During four study periods, each of 3-4 weeks' duration in 1987 and 1988, all patients attending the Copenhagen outpatient Venereal Disease Clinic were encouraged to have a test for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibody. Anonymous testing or testing for research purposes only without any data was also offered. Patients known to be HIV antibody-positive were not re-tested. A total of 1753 patients (1118 men, 635 women) were counselled and testing recommended. Testing was refused by 255 patients, 57 of whom had been tested (all negative) within the previous 3 months. HIV serology was theref
