Mancozeb exposure disrupts endocrine function of the ovary and thyroid in Red Munia (Amandava amandava).

Mancozeb (MCZ), a dithiocarbamate fungicide, has the potential to disrupt thyroid hormone (TH) functioning in non-target organisms. THs play a crucial role in seasonal reproduction and previous studies have shown that even low levels of MCZ exposure can affect thyroid and testicular function in the Red Munia bird (Amandava amandava), a distinct seasonal breeder. This study specifically examines the impact of MCZ exposure on female Red Munia to investigate any sex-specific effects. Exposure to sublethal levels (0.5% LD50) of MCZ for 30 consecutive days during the critical transition to the bree

Experimental and field investigations on the role of birds as hosts of Leishmania infantum, with emphasis on the domestic chicken.

In this study, 19 chickens were experimentally infected by Leishmania infantum and tissue samples, collected at different times, were cultured and subjected to conventional PCR and/or real time PCR (qPCR) to assess their susceptibility to infection. In addition, 121 serum samples from rural chickens (n=73) and backyard birds (n=48) were tested for anti-L. infantum antibodies by indirect immunofluorescence test. All the 19 animals showed to be molecularly positive at least at one tissue sample. In particular, 26 tissue samples from the experimentally infected chickens were positive on conventio

Wild birds drive the introduction, maintenance, and spread of H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b high pathogenicity avian influenza viruses in Spain, 2021-2022.

The 2021-2022 high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) epizootic was the worst ever recorded in Europe in general and in Spain in particular. Between December 2021 and November 2022, H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b HPAI viruses caused outbreaks in both wild birds and domestic poultry in Spain. We analysed the complete genome sequences of H5N1 HPAI viruses identified during this period in Spain and conducted comparative phylogenetic analyses to identify their origin and reconstruct their evolutionary and diffusion dynamics. We identified four different genetic reassortants of H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b HPAI viru

Gastrointestinal Parasites of Wild Birds in Mexico: A Synthetic Review of the Current Knowledge and Approaches for Bird Parasitological Studies.

Parasites are part of ecosystems and can regulate populations. The diseases they cause may negatively impact wildlife, sometimes linked to the imbalance created by anthropogenic environmental changes. Mexico harbors more than 10% of the world's avifauna, but there have been few studies on gastrointestinal (GIT) parasites in wild birds of Mexico. The aim of this review was to provide a comprehensive summary of knowledge on GIT parasites of Mexican wild birds and offer suggestions for approaches for future parasitological research on birds in Mexico. We analyzed 85 documents reporting gastrointe

Active immunization against AMH reveals its inhibitory role in the development of pre-ovulatory follicles in Zhedong White geese.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of active immunization against recombinant Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) protein on the ovarian follicular development, egg production, and molecular regulatory mechanisms in broody-prone Zhedong White geese. For this, a recombinant goose AMH protein was expressed using a prokaryotic expression system. Fifty incubating geese from the same genetic background were selected and equally divided into two groups. The immunization group was actively immunized against the recombinant goose AMH protein, whereas the control group was immunized against

Molecular detection and genotypic characterization of Toxoplasma gondii in wild waterfowls in Jilin Province, Northeastern China.

Toxoplasma gondii can infect almost warm-blooded animals, including humans. Limited information about T. gondii infection in wild waterfowls is available in China. The present study was conducted to determine prevalence and genotype T. gondii infection in 11 wild waterfowl species in Jilin Province, northeastern China. A total of 249 wild waterfowls were sampled between April and July 2013 from Jilin Province, and the tissue samples were collected for the detection of T. gondii by a semi-nested PCR targeting the B1 gene. The positive samples were genotyped at 11 genetic markers (SAG1, 5'- and

Towards the molecular resolution of the bird digenean Hyptiasmus oculeus complex (Cyclocoelidae).

Hyptiasmus Kossack, 1911 is a genus of cyclocoelid digeneans infecting the body cavity, air sacs, and lungs of mainly anseriform and gruiform birds. Some species of this genus have extensive ranges, spanning more than one continent. Therefore, this taxon is potentially of interest for studying patterns of genetic diversity and the associated problems of taxonomic delimitation of species. We focused on the examination of Hyptiasmus specimens initially identified as Hyptiasmus oculeus Kossack, 1911. These digeneans were collected from the nasal sinuses of specimens of Eurasian Coot Fulica atra L

Cryptic species within the Tetratrichomonas gallinarum species complex revealed by molecular polymorphism.

Tetratrichomonas gallinarum is a widespread intestinal parasite of galliform and anseriform birds. The pathogenicity of this species is controversial, presenting an unsettled problem as yet. We analysed the polymorphism and genetic relationship among 29 isolates of T. gallinarum obtained from eight bird species and five T. gallinarum-like isolates from the oral cavity and lower respiratory tract of human patients. Two methods were used for the analyses: RAPD and sequencing of 16S rRNA, 5.8S rRNA, ITS1 and ITS2 genes, both producing consistent and well-supported results. The isolates were divid

Feather corticosterone reveals effect of moulting conditions in the autumn on subsequent reproductive output and survival in an Arctic migratory bird.

For birds, unpredictable environments during the energetically stressful times of moulting and breeding are expected to have negative fitness effects. Detecting those effects however, might be difficult if individuals modulate their physiology and/or behaviours in ways to minimize short-term fitness costs. Corticosterone in feathers (CORTf) is thought to provide information on total baseline and stress-induced CORT levels at moulting and is an integrated measure of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal activity during the time feathers are grown. We predicted that CORTf levels in northern common eide

Clade 2.3.4.4b Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 Pathology in a Common Shorebird Species (Sanderling; Calidris alba) in Virginia, USA.

Anseriformes (waterfowl) and Charadriiformes (shorebirds) are well-recognized natural reservoirs of low pathogenic (LP) influenza A viruses (IAVs). Historically, LP IAVs circulate among healthy individuals during seasonal, and often transcontinental, migrations. However, following the introduction of clade 2.3.4.4b highly pathogenic (HP) A/Goose/Guangdong/1/1996 lineage H5 IAV to North America in 2021, countless wild birds succumbed to fatal infections across the Western Hemisphere. Due to their small size and cryptic plumage patterns, opportunities for carcass recovery and postmortem evaluati

Co-circulation of coronavirus and avian influenza virus in wild birds in Shanghai (2020-2021).

Co-infection of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses has been reported worldwide in humans. Wild birds are natural reservoir hosts for coronaviruses (CoVs) and avian influenza viruses (AIVs). It is unknown whether co-infection with these two types of viruses occurs in wild birds. In this study, the prevalence of co-infection with CoV and AIV in wild birds in Shanghai, China during 2020-2021 was investigated by detecting these viruses in cloacal, tracheal, and faecal samples. Results showed that the overall rate of samples positive for both CoV and AIV was 3.3% (82/2510; 95% confidence interval [CI

Unraveling the host range of Plasmodium huffi: morphological, histopathological and molecular characterization in red-legged seriemas from Brazil.

Avian Plasmodium parasites can be pathogenic to their vertebrate hosts. Although cases of anaemia are frequently reported in parasitized birds, the potential damage caused by the parasite during the exoerythrocytic reproduction phase remains poorly investigated. Here, we report 2 individuals of red-legged seriemas (Cariama cristata) infected with 2 different lineages of Plasmodium huffi, one of them exhibiting potential malarial-compatible tissue lesions in the spleen, liver, brain and lungs, alongside molecular confirmation of parasite presence in the spleen. Previously classified as specific

[Conventional and alternative housing systems for poultry--point of view of infectious disease medicine].

The use of conventional battery cages for hens will be prohibited in Germany in 2007. Only few studies, however, have considered the differences between battery cages and alternative systems with regard to infectious diseases. The existing gaps in the current knowledge need to be closed by research and measures must be developed that will prevent the spread of viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections in alternative poultry housing systems. With regard to virus infections, avian influenza requires particular attention. Since wild birds, particularly anseriformes, represent a reservoir for avi

Epidemiology, evolution, and biological characteristics of H3 avian influenza viruses isolated from chickens in China.

During an epidemiological investigation of avian influenza viruses (AIVs) in China, we isolated four H3 AIVs from chickens. To investigate the genetic relationships of these Chinese isolates with the globally circulating H3 viruses, we performed a detailed phylogenic analysis of the hemagglutination (HA) genes of 2613 representative H3 viruses available in the public source, and found that the HA genes of H3 viruses in China evolved from the Eurasian lineage and became established in domestic Anseriformes (primarily ducks). Bayesian phylodynamic analysis revealed that the Southern China (Guang

Global analysis of Toxoplasma gondii prevalence in wild avian hosts: effects of phylogeny, ecology, and detection methods.

Toxoplasma gondii is an Apicomplexan protozoan parasite that infects warm-blooded animals, including birds. Birds may play a significant role in the parasite's transmission due to their diverse habitats, diets, dispersal abilities, and potential as prey for predators. However, information on T. gondii infection dynamics in avian hosts is limited globally. To address this, we conducted a systematic review of 82 studies reporting T. gondii prevalence in wild birds. Using generalized linear mixed models, we analyzed global prevalence patterns across avian taxa and explored predictors of prevalenc

Aquatic bird bornavirus 1 infection in a captive Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae): presumed natural transmission from free-ranging wild waterfowl.

An adult female emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) presented with anorexia, maldigestion, weight loss, and various subtle nervous deficits. After four months of unrewarding diagnostics, treatments, and supportive care, the emu was euthanized due to lack of clinical improvement and progressive weight loss. Gross pathology revealed a very narrow pylorus and multiple flaccid diverticula of the small intestines. Histopathological findings included severe lymphoplasmacytic encephalomyelitis and multifocal lymphocytic neuritis associated with the gastrointestinal tract. Immunohistochemistry and polymera

Zinc toxicosis in a free-flying trumpeter swan (Cygnus buccinator).

A trumpeter swan (Cygnus buccinator) was observed near a mill pond in Picher, Oklahoma, USA. It became weakened and emaciated after about 1 mo, was captured with little resistance, and taken into captivity for medical care. Serum chemistry results were consistent with hepatic, renal, and muscular damage. Serum zinc concentration was elevated at 11.2 parts per million (ppm). The swan was treated for suspected heavy-metal poisoning, but died overnight. Gross postmortem findings were emaciation and pectoral muscle atrophy. Histopathologic lesions in the pancreas included mild diffuse disruption o

The Genomic Contributions of Avian H1N1 Influenza A Viruses to the Evolution of Mammalian Strains.

Among the influenza A viruses (IAVs) in wild aquatic birds, only H1, H2, and H3 subtypes have caused epidemics in humans. H1N1 viruses of avian origin have also caused 3 of 5 pandemics. To understand the reappearance of H1N1 in the context of pandemic emergence, we investigated whether avian H1N1 IAVs have contributed to the evolution of human, swine, and 2009 pandemic H1N1 IAVs. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis, we concluded that the polymerase gene segments (especially PB2 and PA) circulating in North American avian H1N1 IAVs have been reintroduced to swine multiple times, resulting in
