Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an acquired thrombotic disorder. It mainly occurs with systemic disease or as a primary disorder. All organs may be involved by thrombosis, but to date the most common endocrine manifestation is chronic adrenal insufficiency. Very few cases of hypopituitarism with primary APS have been reported. We report the case of a 27-year-old woman, victim of a stroke leading to double vision and intracranial hypertension. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a macro-adenoma with hemorrhage of a suprasellar lesion. Hormone assessment showed hyper prolactinemia with positive

The antiphospholipid syndrome (APhS) is autoimmune non-inflammatory trombotic vasculopathy, associated with damage of vessels of any caliber and localization that determines the diversity of clinical manifestations of this syndrome. One of possible localizations of thrombosis in AphS is pseudoinfective endocarditis (PsIE). We have performed analysis of clinical and laboratory features of APhS, associated with PsIE. 28 APhS patients with PsIE, average age--44+/-13 years, were included in the study. Among them 21 patients had primary form of APhS, 7 cases had secondary form of APhS. For statisti

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a systemic autoimmune disease associated with arterial and venous thrombotic events and recurrent fetal loss. Cardiac manifestations in APS primarily include accelerated atherosclerosis leading to cardiovascular disease. There is increased cardiovascular mortality in APS. Cardiovascular risk is even higher in secondary APS in lupus patients. Several traditional and disease-related, autoimmune-inflammatory risk factors are involved in APS-associated atherosclerosis and its clinical manifestations. Antiphospholipid antibodies (APA), lupus anticoagulant, anti-ox

Recurrent pregnancy loss is secondary to multiple illnesses. An important cause sometimes undiagnosed is the antiphospholipid syndrome, an autoimmune disease with various clinical alterations (miscarriage, hypertensive disorders, preterm delivery, vascular thrombosis, intrauterine retard growth, death intrauterine, abruption placentae). There are major and minor clinical criteria and precise indications that guide the physician to its recognition. Antibodies related with the syndrome are anticardiolipin and lupic anticoagulant, but other phospholipids seems to be implicated on this pathology a

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a common autoimmune disease, manifested by vascular thrombosis and fetal loss in the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies. Orthopedic involvement is a relatively novel and under-recognized feature of APS. In this article we review the association of primary, secondary, and catastrophic APS with diverse orthopedic conditions, including osteonecrosis in adult and pediatric patients, bone marrow necrosis, nontraumatic fractures, and some other disorders.

Sixty percent of recurrent spontaneous abortions are unexplained. Antiphospholipid syndrome is a multisystem disease with the predominant features of venous and arterial thrombosis, recurrent pregnancy loss, foetal death and the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies. Many epidemiological studies focus on antiphospholipid autoantibodies syndrome (APS) as a cause of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). It is found that 7-25% of RSA would have APS as the main risk factor. 'Association not being synonymous with cause', the proportion of abortions due to the APS is difficult to estimate for seve

Antiphospholipid antibodies are the marker for antiphospholipid syndrome. There is evidence that these autoantibodies lead to both thrombotic diathesis and obstetrical manifestations. Besides the known interaction with soluble coagulation factors, in vitro and in vivo experimental models and studies in humans recently have shown the ability of antiphospholipid antibodies to modulate functions of cells involved in coagulation homeostasis. These findings support a new hypothesis to explain the paradox of the prolongation of coagulation assays in vitro and the association with thrombophilic diath

The antiphospholipid syndrome is a rare disease causing recurring arterial and/or venous thromboses at various sites with the first manifestations at a young age. A case report of a 46-year old man with the first venous system manifestations at the age of 19 before description of the syndrome in literature, is presented. The diagnosis was made when he was 44 years old. Bilateral stenoses in the carotid region and a rare manifestation of renal arteries involvement with renovascular hypertension developed. Critical stenosis of the left renal artery resulted in an afunctional left kidney, signifi

We report a 26 years old female with a Cerebral Palsy as a consequence of a perinatal vascular accident. She was admitted in August 1996 with a left hemiplegia due to a right M1 median artery thrombotic occlusion, as demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging angiography. Transesophagical bi-dimensional echocardiography showed a right atrial myxoma and ruled out the persistence of an oval foramen. The study of coagulation disorders lead to the diagnosis of a primary antiphospholipid syndrome. We postulate that interleukin-6 produced by the myxoma could trigger an immunological reaction leading

One of the major targets of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) is the placenta, the evolution of which during pregnancy has been well documented. Histopathological findings are related to gestational age, and several physiologic and pathologic alterations that occur during its development. The major findings in placentae from aPL positive patients are thrombosis, acute atherosis, a decreased number of syncytio-vascular membranes, increased number of syncytial knots and obliterative arteriopathy. These findings are not specific to the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and sometimes do not correlat

The presence of lupus anticoagulant (LA) and anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA) are associated with recurring pregnancy loss. Of 387 consecutive patients investigated at a Recurring Miscarriage Clinic over a three year period, 63 (16%) were positive for LA and ACA or both. Fifty-nine patients by definition were classified as having antiphospholipid syndrome and four also had systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Fifty-three subsequent pregnancies occurred in 63 patients and of these 37 ended in a live birth giving an overall livebirth rate of 70%. Treatment included low dose aspirin alone in 37 pr

A 12-year-old girl with chorea, thrombocytopenia and false positive VDRL had negative serological tests for SLE, but high titre of antiocardiolipine antibodies. Primary antiphospholipid antibody syndrome is rarely complicated by chorea, but should be taken into consideration in patients who do not fulfill the diagnostic criteria for SLE.

A female patient affected by a thrombotic syndrome due to non SLE-related antiphospholipid antibodies (APA), developed a serious, non inflammatory, thrombotic macroangiopathy and uremic-hemolytic syndrome during oral anticoagulant therapy. She was treated with aspirin, dipyridamole i.v. and with a total of 14 fresh frozen plasma exchange (PEX), but the thrombotic syndrome only showed a partial response with the APA titre dropping considerably. Renal failure did not improve because of acute cortical necrosis. The patient died from infective complications.

Autoimmune diseases (AD) occur frequently in women during their childbearing years and may influence pregnancy outcome and neonatal health. Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can experience a disease flare-up during pregnancy with potential negative effects on the product of conceptus, especially if the disease is active. Recurrent pregnancy loss is now considered as a treatable clinical condition associated with the presence of circulating antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL). The neonatal lupus syndromes (NLS), caused by the transplacental passage of maternal IgG anti-Ro/SS-A and

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an acquired systemic autoimmune thrombo-inflammatory disorder characterized by venous, arterial, and microvascular thrombosis and/or pregnancy morbidity in the setting of persistent antiphospholipid antibodies. Cardiovascular disease in APS extends well beyond classic thrombosis and includes ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, venous thromboembolism, valvular heart disease, pulmonary embolism, accelerated atherosclerosis, and microvascular ischemic injury. Mechanistically, APS is increasingly understood as a disorder of immunothrombosis, in which antiphos

Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) is a vasculopathy with recurrent thrombosis and/or miscarriages mediated by autoantibodies against PL-binding proteins (aPL), mainly beta2glycoprotein I (β2GPI). While clotting is the key in vascular APS, thrombosis is not critical for placenta pathology. Despite that, anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs are the leading treatments, but this is not a 'one-size-fits-all' therapy, and recurrences are reported. Additional therapies (e.g. antimalarials, statins) and a better characterization of the individual risk profile may improve the outcome. Nevertheless,

BACKGROUND: Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the development of autoantibodies and the impairment of the coagulation system. Knowledge about this syndrome is increasing over time, but kidney involvement, especially APS nephropathy, still represents a challenge for physicians.
SUMMARY: A "two hit" model has been hypothesized to explain APS pathophysiology, and the role played by some factors, such as the complement system, is becoming more and more clear. From a clinical point of view, along with thrombosis in any site and/or obstetric morbidities, that
