A new species of the genus Microhyla Tschudi, 1838 (Amphibia: Anura: Microhylidae) from Tay Nguyen Plateau, Central Vietnam.

We describe a new species of Microhyla from Tram Lap forest, Gia Lai Province, Central Vietnam based on morphological, molecular, and acoustic data. The new species resembles M. butleri morphologically, but differs from all congeners by a combination of the following morphological attributes: (1) medium-sized adult snout-vent length 25.2-27.0 mm in 15 males and 30.5 mm in a single female; (2) body habitus moderately stocky; (3) head flat, snout rounded, slightly prominent in ventral profile; (4) dorsum and flanks slightly shagreened with evenly scattered tiny tubercles, ventral skin smooth; (5

Is the red spotted green frog Hypsiboas punctatus (Anura: Hylidae) selecting its preys? The importance of prey availability.

The study of the feeding ecology of amphibians is an old issue in herpetology. Notwithstanding, the lack of food resources data in many studies of amphibians feeding has lead to partial understanding of frog feeding strategies. In this study we evaluate the trophic selectivity of a red spotted green frog (Hypsiboas punctatus) population from a Middle Paraná River floodplain pond in Argentina, and discuss the importance of prey availability data when interpreting results from diet analysis. We analyzed the gut contents of 47 H. punctatus adults and compared frog's diet with the environmental fo

Preparation and ultrastructure of spermatozoa from green poison frogs, Dendrobates auratus, following hormonal induced spermiation (Amphibia, Anura, Dendrobatidae).

Few ultrastructural studies have been performed on members of the Dendrobatidae, although such investigations can be useful for the understanding of reproductive patterns, as a diagnostic method for males in breeding programs for endangered amphibians and for phylogenetic analysis. The sperm ultrastructure of the Green Poison Frog, Dendrobates auratus, from Panama is described following induced spermiation in living animals. To date only testicular spermatozoa in other dendrobatid frogs have been analysed. Moreover, an electron microscopic preparation method (transmission and scanning electron

Screening of cutaneous secretions from Leptodactylus vastus Lutz, 1930 (Anura: Leptodactylidae): identification of bioactive proteins and anticoagulant activity.

Leptodactylus vastus, popularly known as the pepper frog or "jia," is an anuran species endemic to Brazil and found throughout all states of the Northeast region. This study evaluated the protein composition and biological activities of a L. vastus cutaneous gland secretion (LVS). The protein profile was characterized by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and mass spectrometry, followed by screening for lectins, proteases, trypsin-like enzymes, and trypsin inhibitors. LVS was also evaluated for hemolytic and coagulation-modulatory activities, as well as for an

A comprehensive molecular phylogeny of the genus Sylvirana (Anura: Ranidae) highlights unrecognized diversity, revised classification and historical biogeography.

The genus Sylvirana includes 12 species widely distributed in South China and Southeast Asia. The phylogenetic relationships and species diversity for Sylvirana and allied genera remain unresolved and controversial due to insufficient data and incomplete taxon sampling. Using a combined dataset of mitochondrial genes (16S and COI) and 101 nuclear genes obtained through the amplicon sequence capture approach, we generated the most comprehensive phylogenetic analysis for the genus Sylvirana to date, inferring diversity, phylogenetic relationships, and historical biogeography with unprecedented l

A systematic review of the Limnonectes hascheanus-limborgi complex (Anura: Dicroglossidae), with the description of a new species from Peninsular Malaysia.

The taxonomic confusion of the Limnonectes hascheanus-limborgi complex in Peninsular Malaysia has lasted for more than a decade since the presence of L. limborgi was reported in the country based on molecular data in 2014. Before that, L. hascheanus was thought to be the only species of L. hascheaus-limborgi complex occurring in Peninsular Malaysia. Currently, comprehensive approaches using molecular and morphological analyses corroborate the existence of a new species, Limnonectes corvussp. nov. from Peninsular Malaysia. Limnonectes corvussp. nov. is syntopic with L. hascheanus in some locali

Dehydrobufotenin extracted from the Amazonian toad Rhinella marina (Anura: Bufonidae) as a prototype molecule for the development of antiplasmodial drugs.

BACKGROUND: The resistance against antimalarial drugs represents a global challenge in the fight and control of malaria. The Brazilian biodiversity can be an important tool for research and development of new medicinal products. In this context, toxinology is a multidisciplinary approach on the development of new drugs, including the isolation, purification, and evaluation of the pharmacological activities of natural toxins. The present study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxicity, as well as the antimalarial activity in silico and in vitro of four compounds isolated from Rhinella marina venom as

Exposure of Physalaemus cuvieri (Anura) to benzo[a]pyrene and α-naphthoflavone: Morphofunctional effects on hepatic melanomacrophages and erythrocytes abnormalities.

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is a high-risk contaminant of elevated toxicity. Its biotransformation process occurs as the expression of CYP1A1 increases and produces toxic metabolites. In turn, α-naphthoflavone (aNF) represents an inhibitor of CYP1A1, preventing BaP metabolism. Toxicological studies in anurans show alterations in the melanomacrophage (MM) detoxification cell after exposure to xenobiotics. In this study, the production of melanin by MMs was evaluated, as were morphological alterations in the cytoskeleton, phagocytosis and the genotoxicity effects after exposure of an anuran species to

Osteology and skeletal development of Phyllomedusa vaillanti (Anura: Hylidae: Phyllomedusinae) and a comparison of this arboreal species with a terrestrial member of the genus.

Few descriptions of skeletal development and morphology exist for neobatrachians, despite their abundance and diversity. Herein, the adult morphologies of Phyllomedusa vaillanti and P. atelopoides are described and compared and the ontogeny of the larval skeleton of P. vaillanti is described and compared with those of Hyla lanciformis (the only hylid for which a detailed cranial and postcranial osteological ontogenesis has been described) and P. trinitatis (the only other member of this genus for which the larval skeleton has been described). These descriptions and comparisons are made on the

Fused Testes in Neotropical Frogs of the Genus Pristimantis (Anura, Craugastoridae): New Insights Into a Poorly Known Character in Vertebrates.

Amphibian testes vary in shape, from multilobed in caecilians and salamanders to compact, ovoid organs in anurans. Although these variations have been studied extensively in amphibians, there has been little investigation into the structural, copulatory, and reproductive behavioral consequences of unpaired testes, a character shared among some amphibians, cyclostomates, and some teleosts. We analyzed the morphology and structure of unpaired testes in Pristimantis fetosus and Pristimantis permixtus. We also report a single testis in P. hernandezi. Our results suggest that the testis arrangement

A new species of Dainty Frog (Anura: Pyxicephalidae: Cacosternum) and the first endemic anuran to the Cederberg region of South Africa.

Within the genus Cacosternum, the species C. capense and C. namaquense form a clade defined by their robust morphology, large size, and distinct dorsolateral glands. In this study, we describe a third member of the group endemic to the Cederberg region of South Africa. Specimens from this area have historically been assigned to C. karooicum, but here we show that this population is genetically unrelated. Using a combination of molecular, morphological, and acoustic data, we provide evidence to show that the Cederberg population of C. karooicum represents an undescribed species within the C. ca

Identification of immunoreactive mammalian gonadotropin-releasing hormone in the brain of metamorphic larvae of Bufo arenarum Hensel (Amphibia: Anura).

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) immunoreactivity in brain extracts of Bufo arenarum tadpoles were investigated by high-performance liquid chromatography, followed by radioimmunoassay analysis using two different antisera raised against different GnRH variants. Only one immunoreactive peak was identified, eluting in the same position as synthetic mammalian GnRH. This result was further confirmed by serial dilution studies using more specific mammalian GnRH antisera. Our results suggest that mammalian GnRH is most likely an endogenous peptide in the brain of the developing larvae and frogl

Microstructure and transcriptomics reveal rapid light-induced visual plasticity in the non-obligate cave dweller Oreolalax rhodostigmatus (Megophryidae, Anura).

BACKGROUND: Phenotypic plasticity is a specific area of interest that refers to the ability of an organism to alter its phenotype in response to environmental changes. Adaptive visual plasticity is a fascinating phenomenon observed in various animal species. Cave-dwelling organisms often exhibit visual degeneration, but non-obligate species like Oreolalax rhodostigmatus may retain adaptive plasticity. Currently, no laboratory simulations of light-induced conditions have been reported. This study investigated the morphological, histological, and molecular responses of O. rhodostigmatus tadpoles

Parallel evolution of direct development in frogs - Skin and thyroid gland development in African Squeaker Frogs (Anura: Arthroleptidae: Arthroleptis).

BACKGROUND: Cases of parallel evolution offer the possibility to identify adaptive traits and to uncover developmental constraints on the evolutionary trajectories of these traits. The independent evolution of direct development from the ancestral biphasic life history in frogs is such a case of parallel evolution. In frogs, aquatic larvae (tadpoles) differ profoundly from their adult forms and exhibit a stunning diversity regarding their habitats, morphology and feeding behaviors. The transition from the tadpole to the adult is a climactic, thyroid hormone (TH)-dependent process of profound a
