Anxiety and its associated disorders are common in patients with cardiovascular disease and may significantly influence cardiac health. Anxiety disorders are associated with the onset and progression of cardiac disease, and in many instances have been linked to adverse cardiovascular outcomes, including mortality. Both physiologic (autonomic dysfunction, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, changes in platelet aggregation) and health behavior mechanisms may help to explain the relationships between anxiety disorders and cardiovascular disease. Given the associations between anxiety disorders

Anxiety disorders were long underestimated in children by healthcare professionals, but they are now better diagnosed. They account for the most frequent psychiatric diagnosis between 6 and 18 years of age, with differences in prevalence or risk factors related to the clinical forms. Different clinical subtypes of anxiety disorders are detailed in this article: separation anxiety, specific phobia, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress syndrome, and obsessional-compulsive disorder. The repercussions of anxiety are often major on the psychological, relational

Anxiety disorders are frequently associated with affective disorders and represent one of the most important comorbidity in patients with bipolar disorder. Their prevalence is high, whatever the anxiety disorder, with nevertheless higher rates for generalized anxiety disorder (18.4 to 19.9% for lifetime prevalence). Such high frequencies raise essential questions about the link between these groups of disorders, and if it is necessary to distinguish them or to consider their phenomenological overlap as resulting of common disease processes. The existence of comorbid anxiety disorder in bipolar

Anxiety disorders are the most common psychiatric condition presenting to primary care practitioners. Yet they can be easily overlooked or misdiagnosed. Patients that struggle with anxiety disorders are more likely to seek treatment from primary care providers than mental health specialists. Given the costs in terms of debilitation and associated financial burden, and increased risk of suicide, the identification and successful treatment of anxiety is imperative. By means of clinical acumen and the use of screening tools, the provider can develop expertise in recognition and effective treatmen

This article provides a brief review of the current available data concerning present treatment and potential new treatment advances for pediatric anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Disorder-specific treatment methods and innovations, particularly computer-assisted methods of delivery for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) will be reviewed. Additionally, the paper will discuss novel psychopharmacological compounds (e.g., D-cycloserine, riluzole, memantine, and ant

Antidepressant drug treatment is the clinical standard of care for all types of anxiety disorders. Broad efficacy of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors suggests the importance of enhanced serotonergic function of the anxiolytic properties of current antidepressants. However, analysis of the preclinical evidence indicates that most conventional "anxiolytic" drug tests are not sensitive to antidepressants. Such dissociation is not surprising because of the traditional approach to validation of preclinical tests that is to a large extent based on establishing face validity as well as sensiti

Anxiety disorders are frequent and burdensome psychiatric diseases. Despite their moderate to strong heritabilities, the search for candidate genes has been limited by methodological shortcomings hitherto, e.g., the use of clinically defined, but neurobiologically heterogeneous categorical phenotypes. Investigating neurobiological response patterns associated with fear processing as an intermediate phenotype might aid in overcoming these difficulties. The existing imaging literature on the neurobiological correlates of fear processing and anxiety disorders points to a pivotal role of the amygd

OBJECTIVE: Until the mid 90's, most of the studies on the anxiolytic effects of exercise were carried out through the evaluation of the anxiety state of young individuals. They were college students or athletes who might be considered pre-fit, thus limiting the validity of the conclusions as regards populations with pathological anxiety. The number of studies involving patients with anxiety disorder is increasing nowadays. Therefore, the objective of the study is to review the articles that discuss the influence of physical exercise on anxiety disorders.
METHOD: We ran a MEDLINE search betwee

Anxiety disorders represent a widespread illness. Those affected with initial symptoms usually seek the help of their family doctor. In many cases, considerable time passes before the diagnosis has been established and specialised treatment applied, with the result that chronification is furthered. Physical symptoms of an anxiety disorder, and fears of contracting somatic disease are almost always the first to be described. In patients abusing alcohol and/or hypnotics consideration must always be given to an anxiety disorder. Previously existing symptoms almost always include depressive moods

BACKGROUND: To investigate whether patients with anxiety disorders have more variable mood than control subjects.
METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with anxiety disorders and 28 controls were assessed with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-Trait form (STAIT), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), and TEMPS-A questionnaire for temperament. Participants used Visual Analogue Scales (VAS) to rate low, high and anxious moods, morning and evening, for 7 consecutive days. Mood variability was calculated with the Mean Square Successive Difference (MSSD) and the Standard Err

In psychiatry, the use of pharmacological challenges in panic disorder is unique in that the clinical phenomenon of central interest (i.e., the panic attack) can be provoked readily and assessed in the clinical laboratory setting. During the past 20 years pharmacological challenge studies have increased our knowledge concerning the neurobiology of panic disorder remarkably and may ultimately result in novel and more causal treatment strategies. Moreover, the differences in sensitivity to certain panicogens such as serotonergic agents, lactate, carbon dioxide and cholecystokinin tetrapeptide ar

The purpose of this study was to test the theory put forth by Zvolensky et al. [Clin. Psychol. Sci. Pract. 10 (2003) 29] that smoking is specifically associated with panic disorder (PD) and not more generally associated with other anxiety disorders. Smoking behaviors were examined across three anxiety disorders: panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, social phobia (SP), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). A greater proportion of the PD group (40.4%) reported smoking compared to the SP (20%) and OCD (22.4%) groups. Those in the PD group were also more likely than those in the other gr

DANGER AND HARM ARE AVOIDED BY STRATEGIC DECISIONS MADE AT ALL THREE LEVELS OF THE TRIUNE FOREBRAIN: rational (neomammalian), emotional (paleomammalian), and instinctive (reptilian). This applies also to potential harm from conspecifics, which leads to a choice between escalating and de-escalating strategies. Anxiety is a component of de-escalating strategies mediated by the paleomammalian and reptilian forebrains. When the neomammalian (rational) brain fails to deal with the threat of conspecific danger, these more primitive de-escalating strategies may be activated and may present as anxiety

Diagnosis of Menière's Disease is based upon the wellknown labyrinthic syndrome (hypoacusia, tinnitus and dizziness) which manifests with the typical abscessual, recurrent and unforeseeable course. Many Menière patients also report panic attacks, agoraphobia and anxiety which make evaluation of labyrinthic symptoms difficult, affect the onset and maintenance of vestibular compensation and require specific treatments which are very different from those for the control of endolymphatic hydrops. In order to analyse the nature and the meaning of the association of the vestibular and psychiatric sy

An evidence-based review of nonpharmacological treatments for anxiety disorders is presented. The vast majority of the controlled research is devoted to cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and shows its efficiency and effectiveness in all the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) anxiety disorders in meta-analyses. Relaxation, psychoanalytic therapies, Rogerian nondirective therapy, hypnotherapy and supportive therapy were examined in a few controlled studies, which preclude any definite conclusion about their effectiveness in specific phobias, agoraphobia

Two experiments were conducted to study selective memory bias favoring anxiety-relevant materials in patients with anxiety disorders. In the 1st experiment, 32 patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), 30 with social phobia (speaking anxiety), and 31 control participants incidentally learned GAD-relevant words, speech anxiety-relevant words, strongly pleasant words, and words with a neutral valence. Participants did not show any explicit memory bias for threatening materials. Thirty patients suffering from panic disorder (PD) with agoraphobia and 30 controls took part in the 2nd experi

OBJECTIVE: To review the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and treatment of anxiety disorders in late life.
QUALITY OF EVIDENCE: Epidemiologic and comorbidity data are derived from well designed random-sample community surveys. There are virtually no controlled data specific to treatment of anxiety in the elderly. Guidelines for treating anxiety disorders in late life, therefore, must be extrapolated from results of randomized controlled trials conducted in younger patients.
MAIN MESSAGE: Generalized anxiety disorder and agoraphobia account for most cases of anxiety disorder in late li

Behavior therapy is rapidly gaining on importance in the treatment of anxiety disorders. A brief overview of assessment and models of the origins and maintenance of anxiety is presented and demonstrated with a case example of strong avoidance behavior based on feared anxiety attacks in specific situations. The cognitive behavioral intervention comprised 4 sessions of treatment in the office with extensive self-exposure to the feared and previously avoided situation, namely driving the car on the highway and visiting shopping centers, between sessions. The exposure treatment in conjunction with
