Breast and prostate cancer share similarities and likely represent homologous cancers in females and males, respectively. The role of hormones such as testosterone and estrogen in carcinogenesis is well established. Despite worldwide research efforts, the pathogenesis of these diseases is largely not well understood. Personal care products containing estrogens or xenoestrogens have raised concern as a breast cancer risk, especially in young African-American women. In the United States (US) there is a parallel rise in the incidence in breast and prostate cancer compared to selected non-hormone

Apoeccrine glands were found in 13 of 57 specimens of nevus sebaceus. The glands showed the basic structure of eccrine glands, but differed in that a part of the secretory duct was lined by characteristic apocrine epithelium. The apocrine alteration varied from slight apocrine changes in a few secretory cells to an almost complete alteration of the secretory epithelium in other glands. The association with changes in the excretory ducts of rare glands suggested a transformation of eccrine into apocrine glands. It was nevertheless considered as most likely that a majority of the apocrine glands

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the pathology of vulvar hidradenitis suppurativa (HS).
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of the histology of resections for vulvar HS was performed, and a battery of immunohistochemical stains was performed. They included markers of apocrine differentiation (GCDFP-15, CD15, lysozyme) and eccrine differentiation (GCDFP-15, S-100, CA-19.9, HMB45).
RESULTS: Thirteen cases were available for review. Eccrine glands accounted for the majority of glands in all cases. Apocrine glands were not seen or were present only away from the area of active inflammation in 10 cases. I

Apocrine glands are tubular glands, which function as scent glands. These are found at only a few sites like the axillae and anogenital region. They are present as modified glands in the external ear canal (ceruminous glands), in the eyelid (Moll's glands) and in the breast (mammary glands). Occasionally, apocrine glands are found on the face, in the scalp and on the abdomen where they are usually small and non-functional. Apocrine glands develop their secretory portion and become functional only at puberty. Tumours of these glands involving only apocrine tissue are very rare. We present an un

Postoperative radiation therapy (RT) may be beneficial for dogs with anal sac apocrine gland adenocarcinoma (ASAC). Clinically significant late toxicities have been reported in up to 65% of dogs with perianal tumors following non-conformal definitive RT, particularly when fractions of 3 Gy or higher are prescribed. The primary objective of this prospective, descriptive study was to evaluate tolerability of a novel 3D conformal RT (3DCRT) protocol in a group of dogs. Dogs with ASAC were prospectively enrolled if clients elected RT following surgery. The planning target volume was prescribed 50

A histologic study of axillary skin taken from 20 Korean bromhidrosis patients and 10 normal Korean subjects without axillary odor was undertaken. Under light microscope, the skin specimens, stained with hematoxylin and eosin, were examined. Compared with the controls, the apocrine glands were numerous and the gland size large in the bromhidrosis skin. The decapitated epithelial cell-lined contracted glands were seen intermixed with the nondecapitated cell-lined distended glands in the bromhidrosis skin. By comparison, in the normal controls, the apocrine glands were atrophic and lined with fl

Apocrine metaplasia is a very common finding in the female breast after the age of 25. It is so common that many people regard it as a normal component of the breast. This, however, is only really the case in apocrine sweat glands of the axilla and in the peri-areolar apocrine glands. The apocrine cell does, however, contribute to a number of different breast lesions, some of which are very taxing diagnostically; apocrine variants of both in-situ and invasive cancer are encountered. This review considers the common apocrine metaplastic lesions seen in fibrocystic change as well as apocrine ade

Gross cystic disease fluid is a pathologic secretion from breast composed of several glycoproteins, including a unique 15,000-dalton monomer protein, GCDFP-15. By the immunoperoxidase technique, GCDFP-15 was localized in the apocrine metaplastic epithelium lining breast cysts and in apocrine glands in the axilla, vulva, eyelid, and ear canal. In normal breast tissue, a few individual epithelial cells within lobules and small ducts were focally positive for GCDFP-15. Fourteen of 30 breast carcinomas stained positively for GCDFP-15. Of 16 carcinomas with apocrine features, 12 stained positively.

The role of sweat glands in hidradenitis suppurativa has been largely neglected, despite the fact that its original designation, as "hidrosadénite phlegmoneuse", implied an inflammatory malfunction of the apocrine sweat glands as the underlying pathogenic driver. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of apocrine sweat glands with respect to the proinflammatory environment of hidradenitis suppurativa. Therefore, gravimetric assessment and multiplex cytokine assays from sweat obtained from patients with hidradenitis suppurativa along with immunofluorescence cytokine/chemokine analysis o

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is an inflammatory follicular skin disease. In women and men, the condition starts after puberty, has a peak in the third decade, and is rare after the menopause in women. This age distribution suggests a hormonal influence in the pathogenesis of the disease. We therefore hypothesized that apocrine glands in HS patients have a different expression of androgen receptor (AR) and estrogen receptor (ER) compared with healthy skin.
METHODS: Axillary, inguinal, and perianal skin biopsies from female and male patients with HS were immunohistochemically stain

Primary signet-ring cell/histiocytoid carcinomas of the eyelid are extremely rare tumors considered to originate from sweat glands. Here, we report the case of a 72-year-old man diagnosed with primary signet-ring cell/histiocytoid carcinoma of the eyelid and present immunohistochemical analyses of the eyelid apocrine gland (Moll gland) and apocrine and eccrine sweat glands of perineum and axilla. Widespread infiltration of tumor cells with signet-ring cell or histiocytoid appearance was observed in his left eyelid, orbit, and periocular lesion. Tumor cells expressed mucins and showed immunorea

Apocrine hidrocystoma is a rare, benign, cystic tumor of the apocrine sweat glands. They are most commonly located around the eyes and may also be found on the scalp and neck. However, despite the fact that the nipple and areola contain numerous apocrine sweet glands, apocrine hydrocystomas have not been described previously in this area to the best of our knowledge. We report the first case of this cyst in this unsual location.

Forty-seven canine cutaneous epithelial tumors and cysts were examined to determine coordinate expression of cytokeratins 7 (CK7) and 14 (CK14), vimentin, and Bcl-2 using commercially available antibodies. Within non-affected normal skin adjacent to tumors or cysts, CK7 expression was observed in luminal cells in apocrine glands; CK14 expression was observed in the stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, basal layer of outer root sheath, sebaceous glands, and myoepithelial cells of apocrine glands; vimentin expression was observed in dermal papilla and scattered non-epithelial ce

Sweat gland carcinomas are very rare and they are differentiated between tumours of apocrine or eccrine origin. The axilla is the most common site for apocrine gland carcinoma for its great abundance of these glands. There are no recommendations in literature regarding appropriate treatment schedules for apocrine gland carcimonas in advanced stages. We report a case of recurrent left pleural effusion in a 76-year old man with metastatic cutaneous apocrine tumour of the right axilla. We describe the clinical and histological features, with management options and a review of the relevant literat

Hidradenomas are benign adnexal neoplasms of uncertain derivation. Although most investigators traditionally have considered these neoplasms to exhibit eccrine differentiation, with only occasional reports supporting apocrine derivation, subdivision of hidradenomas into two groups was recently suggested: those with eccrine differentiation (or poroid hidradenomas) and those exhibiting apocrine differentiation (or clear cell hidradenomas). We have observed five cases of clear cell hidradenomas manifesting unquestionable apocrine characteristics excised from sites other than the axilla, and displ

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa is traditionally classified as a disease of the apocrine gland. However, different histologic descriptions exist.
OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to describe prospectively the histopathologic characteristics of hidradenitis.
METHODS: We systematically described and classified 60 consecutive biopsy specimens from patients with hidradenitis and compared them with 33 specimens from clinically noninvolved regional controls.
RESULTS: A heterogeneous histologic picture was found. Apocrine glands were involved in a minority of the 60 specimens, 17 showed poral occlu

The case of a patient with a recurrent, painful ulceration on the lower leg, clinically and histologically resembling hidradenitis suppurativa, is presented. The fact that this site is devoid of apocrine glands supports the concept that apocrine involvement in hidradenitis suppurativa is coincidental and that these glands are involved secondarily. It is suggested that in this patient the pathogenesis of the disease is follicular occlusion rather than selective apocrine poral closure.
