Low-grade Mucinous Appendiceal Neoplasm: a Tumor in Disguise of Appendicitis.

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are a rare malignancy, but it is an important diagnostic entity. Ultrasonography and CT scan represent useful method for diagnosis; however, diagnosis is often incidental or intraoperative finding at resection for suspicion of appendicitis. Appendiceal mucinous neoplasm is commonly misdiagnosed as acute appendicitis, adnexal mass, or retroperitoneal tumors. Our case represents the importance of developing a high index of suspicion of appendiceal malignancy and mucocele rupture in patients who are planned for appendectomy. There is risk of second malignancy mostly

[Appendiceal collision tumor: Mucinous epithelial neoplasm and neuroendocrine tumor].

INTRODUCTION: An appendiceal collision tumor is defined as the presence of histologically distinct types of tumors in the appendix without transition between them. Appendiceal tumors are rare, with epithelial neoplasms and neuroendocrine tumors being the most common. OBJECTIVE: Report the case of woman with acute appendicitis and diagnosis of an appendiceal collision tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35 years old woman, who consulted for a 24 hours of continuous epigastric pain with migration to the right iliac fossa; the routine blood test showed leukocytosis with neutrophilia and an ultrasound s

[A Case of Appendix Torsion with Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm].

An 84-year-old woman with a chief complaint of right lower abdominal pain was admitted to our hospital in November 20XX. Abdominal CT scan revealed a 9.6×4.1 cm diameter low density area proximal to the 13 mm diameter appendix, which led to perforated appendicitis with a huge abscess. The patient underwent an open appendectomy with partial cecum resection. The appendix was found to be twisted by 540°. The pathological diagnosis was low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm(LAMN). Recent research has found that the use of laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of LAMN has been increasing. Appropr

Diagnostic and therapeutic laparoscopy in assessment and management of patients with appendiceal neoplasms.

INTRODUCTION: Radiological imaging often underestimates the extent of low volume peritoneal disease. The benefit of laparoscopy in assessing peritoneal metastases from colorectal and gastric cancer is accepted, but is inconclusive for appendiceal malignancy. We report our experience of diagnostic (DL) and therapeutic laparoscopy (TL) in patients with appendiceal tumours to determine indications and role in assessment and management. METHODS: A retrospective review of a National Peritoneal Malignancy Centre's prospectively maintained database was performed. All patients with appendiceal neopla

Synchronous Ovarian and Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasms in the Absence of Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.

BACKGROUND: Synchronous ovarian/appendiceal mucinous neoplasms sometimes occur in the absence of clinical pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), which raises a question about whether the 2 tumors could be independent. METHODS: We identified 11 cases of synchronous ovarian/appendiceal mucinous neoplasms without PMP and subclassified them into groups 1 and 2 based on the presence or absence of microscopic peritoneal/ovarian surface mucin deposits. A 7-marker panel (CK7, CK20, CDX2, PAX8, MUC1, MUC2, and MUC5AC) immunohistochemistry was performed on both tumors. RESULTS: Between the 2 groups, there were

Diagnosis and Treatment of Mucinous Appendiceal Neoplasm Presented as Acute Appendicitis.

Appendiceal mucocele is a rare cause of acute abdomen. Mucinous appendiceal neoplasms represent 0.2-0.7% of all appendix specimens. The aim of this study is to report a case of a mucinous appendiceal neoplasm presented as acute appendicitis, discussing the clinical and surgical approach in the emergency setting. A 72-year-old female patient was admitted to the emergency department with a clinical examination indicative of acute abdomen. The patient underwent abdominal computed tomography scan which revealed a cystic lesion in the right iliac fossa measuring 8.3 × 5.2 × 4.1 cm, with calcified w

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm mimicking an adnexal mass.

We present a rare case of malignant epithelial neoplasm of the appendix, an uncommon disorder encountered in clinical practice, which poses a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We report a particular case in which the appendix was abnormally located in the pelvis, mimicking an adnexal mass. Therefore, it was difficult to make the preoperative diagnosis on clinical examination, imaging studies and laboratory tests and we discovered the lesion during the diagnostic laparoscopy. No lymphadenopathy or mucinous ascites were found. The case was completely handled via the laparoscopic

Asymptomatic low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Low-grade appendiceal neoplasms (LAMN) are characterized by low incidence and atypical clinical presentations, often leading to misdiagnosis as acute or chronic appendicitis before surgery. The primary diagnostic tool for LAMN is abdominal computed tomography (CT) imaging. Surgical resection remains the cornerstone of LAMN management, necessitating en bloc tumor excision to minimize the risk of iatrogenic rupture. Laparoscopy, known for its minimal invasiveness, reduced postoperative discomfort, and expedited recovery, is a safe and reliable approach for LAMN treatment. Despite the

Ileocolic Intussusception Due to Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm.

We report a rare case of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) causing ileocolic intussusception. The case underscores the importance of considering ileocolic intussusception in differential diagnoses for nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms. Early diagnosis via contrast-enhanced CT and scrupulous surgical intervention are crucial for favorable outcomes.

[A Case of Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm with Cecum Cancer].

The case was a 76-year-old man. He visited our hospital for a positive fecal occult blood test finding at a medical examination. A colonoscopy revealed a macroscopic, 30 mm, type-1 lesion in the cecum. We performed laparoscope-assisted ileocolic resection and D3 dissection, with a diagnosis of cecum cancer. In postoperative histopathological examination, the tumor in the cecum was diagnosed as a well-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma. In addition, a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm(LAMN)was observed on the distal side of the appendix. The patient has survived for 9 months after surg

Giant low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (AMN) is extremely rare. Since the disease does not manifest a characteristic profile of clinical symptoms, it is easy to misdiagnose and still difficult to diagnose without operation. Here, we report a case of low-grade AMN (LAMN) and summarize its clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment. CASE SUMMARY: A 63-year-old postmenopausal woman presented with a history of right lower abdominal mass. The patient underwent laparotomy, which showed an appendiceal mucocele originating from the apex of the appendix, and a simple appendectomy was performed. Th

Low-grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm in the Context of Acute Appendicitis.

A 49-year-old woman presented with clinical signs, pre-operative imaging, and intra-operative findings suggestive of acute appendicitis. A laparoscopic appendectomy was performed. Final pathology revealed a low-grade appendiceal neoplasm with serrated architecture, and secondary acute inflammation of the appendix (5 cm in length x 0.7 cm in diameter) with a congested and hemorrhagic serosal surface. The main concern in the management of patients with low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is that these dysplastic tumors share such similar clinical, imaging, and intraoperative features

Pseudomyxoma peritonei and selected other aspects of the spread of appendiceal neoplasms.

The varied aspects of spread of appendiceal neoplasms are reviewed with emphasis on the often clinically dramatic phenomenon known as pseudomyxoma peritonei, a term mostly used to describe grossly evident mucin within the peritoneal cavity. The majority of cases of pseudomyxoma peritonei result from tumors primary in the appendix, which are usually low-grade. On microscopic examination pseudomyxoma peritonei is typically characterized by large aggregates of mucin which may be relatively acellular or cellular containing strips of mucinous epithelium, mucinous epithelium encircling glands and cy

[A Case of Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm with Extra-Appendiceal Mucin Extrusion Successfully Treated with Laparoscopic Surgery].

A 49-year-old male patient, who presented with abdominal pain, was suspected of having acute appendicitis. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a swollen appendix, accompanied by a 40 mm low-density mass located behind the appendix. He was diagnosed with an appendiceal mucinous neoplasm, and laparoscopic ileocecal resection was performed. A soft tumor was found proximal to the swollen appendix and was adhered tightly to the iliopsoas muscle. The tumor cells were exfoliated carefully, and the tumor was excised en bloc without any injury. Histopathological examination revealed a low- grade app

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms: Histomorphological spectrum in a tertiary care hospital.

BACKGROUND: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) are benign non-invasive epithelial proliferations of the appendix. These usually present clinically as mucoceles and these rarely exceed 2 cm in diameter. Lesions confined to the lumen are labelled as LAMN; however those in which mucin spreads outside the peritoneum are labeled as pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). AIMS AND OBJECTIVE: A retrospective study was conducted over a period of three years and all cases of appendectomies were studied. Twelve cases of LAMN were identified, which is a diagnostic dilemma for the pathologists and cl

Prognostic prediction of preoperative nutritional status in low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms.

To describe the preoperative nutritional status of Low-grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasms (LAMNs) and identify prognostic factors for survival. Medical records from 165 patients with LAMNs who attended the Aerospace Center Hospital, Beijing, China between January 2017, and December 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Survival analysis was performed with the Kaplan-Meier method, the log-rank test, and a Cox proportional hazards model. Among 165 patients, 59 (36%) were male and 106 (64%) were female. Patient's median age was 58 years (range 20 to 78 years). Univariate analysis indicated that g

Spectrum of computed tomography manifestations of appendiceal neoplasms: acute appendicitis and beyond.

Appendiceal neoplasms are rare and often only discovered incidentally during surgery performed for acute appendicitis. Computed tomography (CT) has been demonstrated to be a reliable technique for accurately establishing the preoperative diagnosis of appendiceal neoplasms that manifest as acute appendicitis through the presence of certain imaging findings. Other manifestations of appendiceal neoplasms include appendiceal mass, mucocoele, localised abscess formation, ileus, increasing abdominal girth from pseudomyxoma peritonei, and intussusception. This pictorial essay illustrates varied CT fi
