Effect of oat and soybean rich in distinct non-starch polysaccharides on fermentation, appetite regulation and fat accumulation in rat.

Consumption of non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) is associated with reduced risk of obesity. This study aimed to compare the effects of cereals (oats) and legumes (soybean), rich in different classes of NSP, on appetite regulation and fat accumulation in rats. Soy pectin fermented more efficient than cereal arabinoxylan in rats. Soy pectin and oat β-glucan were utilized mainly in the caecum of rats. Only small amount of maltodextrin, cello-oligosaccharides and xylo-oligosaccharides were detected in the digesta. Caecal fermentation of soy pectin produced significantly higher concentration of sho

Neurocognitive performance and appetite-regulating hormones in obesity with and without eating disorders: A comprehensive review and empirical analysis.

Obesity and eating disorders (ED) share neurocognitive vulnerabilities involving executive control and reward processing, yet the neuroendocrine–cognitive links underlying their comorbidity remain underexplored. This study synthesizes current evidence on neurocognitive mechanisms in obesity and ED and examines associations between neurocognition and appetite-regulating hormones in clinical groups. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted in 171 women: obesity with ED (OB + ED; n = 43), obesity without ED (OB–ED; n = 70), and healthy controls (HC; n = 58). Neurocognition was assessed using the

CAMKK1 in Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Evidence of Interaction With Appetite-Regulating, Metabolic and Inflammatory Factors.

INTRODUCTION: Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase 1 (CAMKK1) regulates energy homeostasis through AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). CAMKK1 has been implicated in appetite and satiety regulation; however, its role in obesity or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains unexplored. In this cross-sectional study, the primary aim was to confirm whether CAMKK1 is elevated in individuals with diabetes. The secondary aim was to investigate CAMKK1's molecular correlates. METHODS: CAMKK1 serum levels in individuals with obesity (n = 3,061), patients with T2DM (n = 4,910) and controls (

Microplastics affect food intake and the expression of appetite regulators and nutrient transporters in pond loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus).

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging pollutants in freshwater ecosystems, posing risks to aquatic organisms. This study examines the effects of dietary MP exposure on food intake, appetite regulation, and nutrient transporter expression in pond loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus), a sediment-feeding facultative air breathing freshwater fish. Fish were exposed to small (250-300 μm), medium (425-500 μm), and large (710-850 μm) polyethylene microspheres for two weeks. Food intake was significantly reduced in fish fed small and medium MPs, but not large MPs, suggesting size-dependent ingestion effects.

Effects of voluntary wheel running on appetite-regulating peptides and neuroinflammation in the hypothalamus of ovariectomized middle-aged mice.

The postmenopausal period is associated with an increased tendency to gain weight. This may be due to disturbances in appetite regulation, mainly in the hypothalamus and nutritional behaviors, as well as persistent neuroinflammation resulting from estrogen deficiency. Research indicates that physical activity may counteract estrogen deficiency by improving hypothalamic regulation of appetite and inflammation, thereby promoting better energy balance and decreasing the risk of weight gain after menopause. We investigated whether voluntary wheel running (VWR) impacts factors related to appetite,

Fetal origins of obesity: a novel pathway of regulating appetite neurons in the hypothalamus of growth-restricted rat offspring.

PURPOSE: Fetal growth restriction causes a series of sequelae, some of which, such as hyperphagia, reduced satiety and postnatal obesity, are believed to be associated with embryonic hypothalamic neurons impairment. The mechanisms underlying the linkage of fetal brain injuries to break the energy homeostasis have not been elucidated completely. Here, we aim to investigate the effect of intrauterine energy restriction on remodeling appetite neurons in the hypothalamus of fetal and postnatal infant rats. METHODS: Low-protein (8%) diet combined with 75% energy restriction was used to establish a

Current Aspects of the Role of Autoantibodies Directed Against Appetite-Regulating Hormones and the Gut Microbiome in Eating Disorders.

The equilibrium and reciprocal actions among appetite-stimulating (orexigenic) and appetite-suppressing (anorexigenic) signals synthesized in the gut, brain, microbiome and adipose tissue (AT), seems to play a pivotal role in the regulation of food intake and feeding behavior, anxiety, and depression. A dysregulation of mechanisms controlling the energy balance may result in eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). AN is a psychiatric disease defined by chronic self-induced extreme dietary restriction leading to an extremely low body weight and adiposity. BN is

Role of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α in regulating oxidative stress and hypothalamic neuropeptides-mediated appetite control.

Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) is a transcriptional activator responding to hypoxia. Amphetamine (AMPH), however, can activate HIF-1 under normoxic conditions, which is associated with the co-activation of oxidative stress. Hypothalamic neuropeptides and anti-oxidative enzymes have been found to participate in amphetamine (AMPH)-mediated appetite control. The present study examined whether HIF-1 was involved in the oxidative stress and anorectic action of AMPH. Rats were daily treated with AMPH for 4 days, and expression levels of HIF-1α, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, neuropeptide

An Intraperitoneal Treatment with Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide (CGRP) Regulates Appetite, Energy Intake/Expenditure, and Metabolism.

Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a 37-amino acid neuropeptide expressed both centrally and peripherally. CGRP has been shown to be involved in arteriolar dilation, cardiovascular regulation, pain transmission, migraine, and gastrointestinal physiology. Our current research is aimed at analyzing CGRP's impact on appetite/satiety, body metabolism, and energy homeostasis. Our study investigated the effects of a single-dose intraperitoneal (IP) treatment with CGRP on food and water consumption, energy expenditure, physical activity, respirometry, and a panel of plasma metabolic hormones i

Brain Perception of Different Oils on Appetite Regulation: An Anorectic Gene Expression Pattern in the Hypothalamus Dependent on the Vagus Nerve.

(1) Background: We examined the effect of the acute administration of olive oil (EVOO), linseed oil (GLO), soybean oil (SO), and palm oil (PO) on gastric motility and appetite in rats. (2) Methods: We assessed food intake, gastric retention (GR), and gene expression in all groups. (3) Results: Both EVOO and GLO were found to enhance the rate of stomach retention, leading to a decrease in hunger. On the other hand, the reduction in food intake caused by SO was accompanied by delayed effects on stomach retention. PO caused an alteration in the mRNA expression of NPY, POMC, and CART. Although PO

Cross-regulatory interaction between the HPI axis and appetite regulation in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) parr under chronic and acute stress.

Reduced feed intake is a common stress response in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), yet the interaction between the stress-related hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis and the appetite-regulating hypothalamic melanocortin system remains poorly understood. This study explored the potential cross-regulatory interaction between these two systems by assessing feed intake, gastrointestinal content, and hypothalamic mRNA expression of crf1 paralogs, a key factor in stress handling, and appetite-related genes npy, agrp1, pomc, and cart in Atlantic salmon parr exposed to 21 days of unpredictable

Mechanisms of GLP-1 Receptor Agonist-Induced Weight Loss: A Review of Central and Peripheral Pathways in Appetite and Energy Regulation.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists (RAs) have become central in managing obesity and type 2 diabetes, primarily through appetite suppression and metabolic regulation. This review explores the mechanisms underlying GLP-1 RA-induced weight loss, focusing on central and peripheral pathways. Centrally, GLP-1 RAs modulate brain regions controlling appetite, influencing neurotransmitter and peptide release to regulate hunger and energy expenditure. Peripherally, GLP-1 RAs improve glycemic control by enhancing insulin secretion, reducing glucagon release, delaying gastric emptying, and

Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) acts as an appetite regulator rather than as a hypoglycemic incretin in grass carp.

In mammals, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) exerts a potent hypoglycemic effect, whereas its role in fish remains controversial. In this study, synthetic grass carp GIP was administered via intraperitoneal injection, and its effects were evaluated over 24 h. GIP significantly elevated blood glucose levels at 0.5 h post-injection compared to the saline control. This hyperglycemia was accompanied by increased hepatic expression of the gluconeogenic genes glucose-6-phosphatase (g6pc) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase 1 (pck1) and decreased expression of the glycolytic gene

Dietary phosphorus level regulates appetite through modulation of gut and hypothalamic expression of anorexigenic genes in broiler chickens.

Two experiments were designed to elucidate gut and hypothalamic molecular regulation of appetite by dietary phosphorus (P) concentration in broiler chickens. Birds (192 Cobb-500 broiler chickens) were randomly assigned to 3 experimental diets in experiment 1 (Exp. 1) and 24 broiler chickens were randomly assigned to 3 treatment groups in Exp. 2. Each diet comprised 8 replicate cages, with either 8 birds (Exp. 1) or 1 bird (Exp. 2) per replicate cage. In Exp. 1, diets contained 1.2 (P-deficient), 2.8 (P-marginal) or 4.4 (P-adequate) g/kg non-phytate P (nPP). In Exp. 2, birds fed the P-adequate

Cloning and effects of fasting on the brain expression levels of appetite-regulators and reproductive hormones in glass catfish (Kryptopterus vitreolus).

The regulation of feeding is a complex process that involves coordination between various signals. Feeding hormones can be described as orexigenic (stimulate food intake, e.g. orexin and neuropeptide Y - NPY) or anorexigenic (inhibit food intake, e.g. cocaine and amphetamine regulated transcript - CART). Reproduction and energy homeostasis are closely linked, as factors that affect appetite have also been shown to influence reproductive hormones and behaviors. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is one of the most influential factors controlling reproduction. Although our understanding of th

Almond protein and whey protein beverages elicit comparable appetite regulation, gastrointestinal symptoms and hydration responses in postmenopausal women: a randomised crossover trial.

INTRODUCTION: Postmenopausal women experience physiological changes in appetite regulation, gastrointestinal function and hydration that may influence utility of protein supplements. Almond protein powder (APP), a plant-derived by-product of almond oil extraction, provides protein alongside fibre and unsaturated fat, which may influence these outcomes differently from whey protein (WP). Objectives of this study were to compare acute appetite, gastrointestinal and hydration responses to APP, WP, placebo and water ingestion in postmenopausal women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine postmenopausal wom
