Rhinosporidium seeberi: Is It a Fungi or Parasite?

Rhinosporidium seeberi (R. seeberi) causes rhinosporidiosis, which is manifested as tumor-like polyps developing primarily in the nostrils and conjunctiva in human and animals. This disease is characterized by the presence of large, round-shaped mature stage and small endospores with resistance to culturing. R. seeberi was first reported in 1900 as a sporozoan parasite, but later classified as a lower fungi, although its morphological similarity with aquatic parasites were also noticed. According to 18S small-subunit ribosomal DNA sequencing, R. seeberi belongs to a group of fish parasite DRIP

Rapidly Progressive Soft Tissue Infection of the Upper Extremity With Aeromonas veronii Biovar sobria.

Aeromonas veronii, a bacterium found in freshwater, is an unusual pathogen in healthy patients. We present a case report of a rare, aggressive subtype in a young, immunocompetent individual. History of injury in an aquatic environment and culture data are key for identification of the causal agent and should dictate acute clinical management and antibiotic therapy. Coverage should include cephalosporins, quinolones, or sulfas if Aeromonas is suspected, and adjusted depending on culture and sensitivity. Early surgical exploration, incision and drainage, and appropriate antimicrobial therapy are

Coxiella burnetii: Emerging threats, molecular insights, and advances in diagnosis and control measures.

Coxiella burnetii, a Gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacterium and causative agent of Q fever, is a re-emerging zoonotic pathogen with a complex transmission cycle involving livestock (cattle, sheep, and goats), diverse terrestrial and aquatic wildlife, arthropod vectors (ticks and fleas), and resilient environmental reservoirs, such as free-living amoebae. Humans are mainly infected by inhaling contaminated aerosols, especially during parturition. This review offers an integrative synthesis of current research across six key domains: ecological reservoirs, diagnostic strategies, molecul

Deep Mycobacterium marinum Infection of the Digit Presenting Without Cutaneous Lesions: A Case Report.

Mycobacterium marinum is a slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacterium acquired through breaches of the skin during contact with fish or aquatic environments. It classically produces a cutaneous papulonodular lesion of the hand, but deeper involvement of tendon sheaths, joints, and bone occurs in a minority of patients and carries greater morbidity and a higher risk of failure of medical therapy alone. We report a rare case in which establishing the diagnosis was challenging: M. marinum infection presenting as an isolated deep swelling of a digit without any cutaneous lesion in an immunocompeten

[Food-borne trematodiases].

Food-borne trematodiases (flukes) are transmitted through the consumption of contaminated undercooked aquatic food. Infections are most prevalent in Southeast Asia and Latin America, but might occur anywhere due to food trade, international travel, human migration. Clinical manifestations are hepatobiliary, intestinal, and pleuropulmonary. The worse complication is development of cholangiocarcinoma. Efficacious drug therapy are available, however prevention control measures are essential to avoid transmission. Since 2015, trematodiases are included in the WHO program implemented to fight negle

Combinatorial effects of administration of immunostimulatory compounds in feed and follow-up administration of triple-dose SLICE® (emamectin benzoate) on Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., infection with Lepeophtheirus salmonis.

Several immunostimulatory feed additives have shown the ability to induce protective responses in Atlantic salmon to infection with Lepeophtheirus salmonis. However, even the most encouraging results rarely surpass a 50% protective index in the host. That fact coupled with the well-documented limitations of single-therapy strategies in the effective management of parasitic infections generally make it imperative to identify therapies that can be combined in an integrated pest management approach for sea lice. With this in mind, we hypothesized that immunostimulatory feeds could enhance the pro

A Conserved Mechanism in Eye Optical Development: Lens Nucleus Centralization in Xenopus laevis.

Developing eye optics, determined by the lens and cornea, must coordinate with the axial length of growing eyes to focus light onto the retina to form an image. It was found that zebrafish (Danio rerio) lens nuclei are initially anteriorly localized in optical axes in larvae, then centralize at older stages. An anteriorly placed lens nucleus would increase lens power, thereby likely enabling a functional optical system in larvae, where eye axial length is short. To assess if alike mechanisms occur in other aquatic animals, we studied the clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, a fully aquatic species sim

An exploratory study of the effect of regular aquatic exercise on the function of neutrophils from women with fibromyalgia: role of IL-8 and noradrenaline.

Fibromyalgia (FM) syndrome is associated with elevated systemic inflammatory and stress biomarkers, and an elevated innate cellular response mediated by monocytes and neutrophils. Exercise is accepted as a good non-pharmacological therapy for FM. We have previously found that regular aquatic exercise decreases the release of inflammatory cytokines by monocytes from FM patients. However, its effects on the functional capacity of neutrophils have not been studied. The aim of the present exploratory study was to evaluate, in 10 women diagnosed with FM, the effect of an aquatic exercise program (8

Arthritis remission with partial cartilage restoration in a 9-year-old female with hip chondrolysis following treatment with adalimumab.

Hip chondrolysis is observed primarily or secondary to other diseases and is a rare but yet debilitating disease, characterised by loss of cartilage of the femoral epiphysis and significant restriction of motion. We present the case of a 9-year-old female diagnosed with hip chondrolysis associated with probable juvenile psoriatic arthritis. Avoidance of weight-bearing activities and treatment with corticosteroids, methotrexate, and adalimumab followed by aquatic therapy resulted in clinical and radiographic improvement as well as partial cartilage regeneration.

Rhinosporidiosis of lacrimal sac: An interesting case of orbital swelling.

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic localized granulomatous disease caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi, an aquatic protistan parasite belonging to a clade, Mesomycetozoea. Infestation of Rhinosporidiosis to the eye and adnexa is termed oculosporidiosis, in such cases, conjunctival mucosa is mostly involved; however in our case, it involved only the lacrimal sac and deeper periorbital tissue and presented as a case of orbital swelling. Surgical excision of the lesion was done, postoperatively dapsone therapy was given for 6 months, and the patient responded very well with no recurrence till date.

Adaptations of subpalpebral lavage systems used for llamas (Lama glama) and a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina).

Subpalpebral lavage systems (SPLSs) were adapted for use in zoo llamas (Lama glama) and a wild harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) during therapy for severe ulcerative keratitis or corneal perforation. One llama presented with a melting corneal ulcer caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which necessitated frequent application of a topical ophthalmic antibiotic. The lavage system was used routinely during the day and was connected to a balloon infusion system at night to allow for continuous medication administration. The ulcer healed soon after therapy was extended to include overnight treatment with th

Aquatic exercise versus standard care on paraspinal muscle morphology and function in chronic low back pain patients: a randomized controlled trial.

Low back pain (LBP) is a disabling disease and a public health concern. Aquatic exercise is an alternative form of exercise with less spinal loading and difficulty performing movements, benefiting those with pain-related fear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of an aquatic exercise program (SwimEx) versus standard care (SC) on lumbar paraspinal muscle volume and composition, strength and patient outcomes in individuals with chronic LBP. This randomized controlled trial included 34 participants with chronic LBP. Participants were randomly allocated to each group (SwimEx, n = 18; SC, n

Successful treatment of stage III hidradenitis suppurativa with botulinum toxin A.

A 41-year-old obese Native American woman presented with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) after failing all available treatment options. Her HS was more pronounced in the axillary and groin regions (Hurley stage III) and was a major source of her pain and a barrier for home exercise and aquatic therapy. She received a botulinum toxin A injection every 3 months (four times thus far), which has significantly helped alleviate her pain and curb the progress of her HS by resolving abscesses and healing draining sinuses.

Successful Treatment of Fasciola hepatica with Metronidazole in a Child: A Case Report.

Fasciola hepatica is a zoonotic liver trematode that usually causes infection in cattle and sheep, and is transmitted to humans by consuming water and aquatic plants contaminated with metacercaria. The detection of Fasciola eggs in stools, serological evaluation and radiological evaluation are essential for diagnosis. Triclabendazole is the first-line therapy for fascioliasis. However, as triclabendazole is not an easily accessible drug in countries such as Turkey, it reveals a quest for alternative therapies. In this report, we present a 10-year-old boy with fascioliasis successfully treated
