Cryptosporidiosis among immunocompromised patients in Saudi Arabia.

A total of (408) immunocompromised Saudi patients (<2 - >60 years) checked for Cryptosporidium infection showed 69.7% and 64.2% infection rates by Kinyoun's acid fast staining for oocysts and a monoclonal ELISA kit for C. parvum coproantigen detection respectively (P > 0.05). Microscopic examination of stained faecal smears was more sensitive than ELISA (P > 0.05) & showed 84.4% sensitivity, 81.7% specificity & 83.8% diagnostic accuracy. Infection rates of 47.6%, 78.2% & 82.3% were obtained by microscopic examination for children with chronic diarrhea and malnutrition, patients receiving immun

Childhood pneumococcal bacteraemia in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Forty-nine children with pneumococcal bacteraemia seen during a 5-year period (1 January 1991 to 31 December 1995) at King Khalid University Hospital were studied. The majority (61.2%) were under 2 years of age. The focus of infection was pneumonia, pharyngitis or undetermined in 28.6%, 18.4% and 20.4%, respectively. Diseases that had probably predisposed them to pneumococcal bacteraemia (mainly nephrotic syndrome) were encountered in 24.5% of cases. Forty-five per cent of the cases occurred during the summer season and in 29% the disease was nosocomially acquired. No death was recorded in thi

National Immunization Coverage Survey Saudi Arabia, 1991.

A nationwide survey was carried-out aiming at determination of immunization coverage level against the six killer diseases of childhood (tuberculosis, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, poliomyelitis, and measles). Variations between geographical zones, urban-rural settings, age, education and mother's employment, father's education, and child's birth order were studied. The standard WHO cluster technique was used. The sample (1102 children) was restricted to Saudi children 1-2 years old. Interviewers were exposed to training and methods of calibration, and involved in a pilot survey. Nationally,

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The clinical features and outcome of disease in 14 cases of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) diagnosed at the King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh during an 8-year period are similar to those described elsewhere. Therapy was associated with arrest of deterioration for 2.5 years in one patient, and with survival after diagnosis for 2-7 years in four others. Many of the cases had initial misdiagnoses because of the frequently bizarre modes of presentation. It is thought that many more cases of SSPE occur in Saudi Arabia and also in many other tropical countries than are currently re

Paralytic poliomyelitis outbreak in Gizan, Saudi Arabia.

An outbreak of paralytic poliomyelitis occurred in the Southern region of Saudi Arabia between April and August of 1989. Poliovirus type 1 (wild type) was isolated from the stool of 4 out of 11 patients and 10 out of the 11 patients had a high neutralizing antibody to the isolated virus (greater than or equal to 256). The results were confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Atlanta. The fact that the outbreak occurred despite a high level of immunization coverage and that all our cases had already been immunized with sabin oral polio vaccine (OPV) is probably an indication of the u

Cesarean section; changing patterns in Saudi Arabia.

Analysis of 8000 cesarean births in the Maternity and Children's Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia documents an increase in the cesarean section (CS) rate from 3.9% in 1979 to 9.9% in 1984. This increase is mainly attributed to indications such as repeat section (37.2%) and fetal distress (28.5%). Increase in the diagnosis of fetal distress was related to the introduction of electronic fetal monitoring and this diagnosis was not substantiated by Apgar score of the neonate. Because of the social preference for large families in Saudi Arabia, over-use of cesarean section should be avoided. For this

A national survey of radioisotope applications in Saudi Arabia.

OBJECTIVE: Radioisotopes play an important role in healthcare, industry, scientific research, and technological development. However, information on their utilization patterns, supply-chain challenges, radiation safety practices, and workforce development needs in Saudi Arabia remains limited. This study aimed to characterize radioisotope applications across major sectors, assess supply and safety-related challenges, and identify priorities for strengthening the resilience and sustainability of radioisotope use in the Kingdom. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted amon

Suicidal thoughts and behaviors in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

OBJECTIVE: Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) constitute an escalating public health concern globally. Despite the growing burden of suicidal ideation, plan, and attempts, national information on the trends of STB is lacking in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Therefore, we aim to report on the prevalence, correlates, and treatment-seeking behaviors associated with STB in the country using nationally representative information from The Saudi National Mental Health Survey (SNMHS). METHODS: The SNMHS is a national household survey of Saudi citizens aged 15-65 (n = 4004). The adapted Compos

A Study on the Prevalence of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux in Saudi Arabia.

Introduction Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a condition characterized by the backflow of gastric contents rising through the esophagus, affecting the aerodigestive tract and leading to throat symptoms such as hoarseness, chronic cough, and throat clearing. LPR is recognized as a separate condition from gastroesophageal reflux disease, despite the fact that they both involve the backflow of the stomach contents as their primary pathology. Our study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of LPR within the population of Saudi Arabia. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted using an electronic

Clinical and Genetic Characterization of Craniosynostosis in Saudi Arabia.

Background: Craniosynostosis (CS) is defined as pre-mature fusion of one or more of the cranial sutures. CS is classified surgically as either simple or complex based on the number of cranial sutures involved. CS can also be classified genetically as isolated CS or syndromic CS if the patient has extracranial deformities. Currently, the link between clinical and genetic patterns of CS in the Saudi population is poorly understood. Methodology: We conducted a retrospective cohort study among 28 CS patients, of which 24 were operated and four were not. Clinical and genetic data were collected bet

Delineation of cystinuria in Saudi Arabia: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Cystinuria is an inherited metabolic disease that is caused by defects in two genes, SLC3A1 and SLC7A9, which result in a renal reabsorptive defect of cystine and other dibasic amino acids, including ornithine, arginine, and lysine. Patients usually present with recurrent renal calculi and may develop renal impairment. Medical management includes high fluid intake and chelating agents. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study describing cystinuria in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A retrospective chart review for cystinuria patients from the genetic and nephrology divisions b
