Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis was found in a small cluster of cases in Tejuçuoca, Ceará, Brazil. Tests were carried out to determine its phenotypic characteristics: colony morphology on Ashdown agar and MacConkey agar, biochemical profile in conventional biochemical tests and API 20NE, arabinose assimilation and susceptibility testing by disk diffusion, comparing with data in the literature. This study confirms the presence of B. pseudomallei in Brazil and describes its characteristics.

Selenomonas sputigena is an anaerobic, motile, crescent-shaped, gram-negative bacterium found in the human oral cavity that is associated with dental caries and periodontitis. Strain ATCC 33150 was replaced as the type strain for S. sputigena and was described as atypical, as it fermented arabinose and displayed a unique pattern by polyacrylamide electrophoresis compared to other isolates. The genome of the atypical strain, ATCC 33150, is 2,601,282 base pairs in length, comprising 2,342 protein-coding genes, and a 54.68% GC content.

Clostridium botulinum type C progenitor toxin with a molecular weight of 500 k daltons (C1 L toxin), purified from the bacterial cells, bound at pH 2 to the cell-wall peptidoglycan derived from certain strains. The carbohydrate moiety of the peptidoglycan contained arabinose and galactose at a certain ratio, both of which may directly be associated with the binding. The binding, being dependent on the quality and quantity of the sugars, enhanced the oral toxicity of the toxin to the chicken as well as the mouse.

Simultaneous conversion of syngas and sugars is a promising approach to overcome limitations of syngas fermentation. Clostridium autoethanogenum LAbrini, obtained by adaptive laboratory evolution, is known to show improved autotrophic process performance. Under purely autotrophic conditions, C. autoethanogenum LAbrini exhibits substantially faster growth and biomass formation compared to the wild-type in fully controlled, stirred-tank bioreactors with a continuous gas supply. In mixotrophic processes, the pre-culture strategy has a significant impact on the growth and metabolic activity of C.

Melioidosis is a tropical infection, first described in Myanmar but now rarely diagnosed there, which is widespread in Southeast Asia. The infection is predominantly acquired by people and animals through contact with soil or water. Australine (1), 7-epi-australine (2), and their C-7-fluorinated derivatives 4 and 5 have been synthesized efficiently from D-arabinose-derived cyclic nitrone 11. Fluorination at the C-7 position enhanced the inhibition against A. niger α-glucosidase, and this constitutes the first example of fluorination substitution for a hydroxyl increasing the inhibition of any glycosidases. The enantiomers synthesized from nitrone ent-11 showed no inhibition of the corresponding enzymes.
