Disentangling the South American "Ceratomontia": new genus, new combinations, and new species (Opiliones: Laniatores: Triaenonychidae).

Previous phylogenetic studies using morphological or molecular characters failed to recover the transcontinental triaenonychid genus Ceratomontia Roewer, 1915, as monophyletic, and pointed out the necessity to erect a new genus for the new world representatives. In this work we address this taxonomic claim and the genus Maurymontia gen. nov. is described to include the South American species. In addition to the proposed new combinations, we also provide a detailed redescription and illustrations for all the previously known species: Maurymontia argentina (Canals, 1939) comb. nov., Maurymontia

Three new species of Paecilaemella (Cosmetidae: Flirteinae) from the upper Amazonian Basin.

The recent revalidation of Paecilaemella Roewer, 1925 as a valid genus, along with the inclusion of Gonyleptes multimaculatus Wood, 1869, and Protus ornatus Roewer, 1912, in this previously monotypic genus, and its placement in the subfamily Flirteinae, represent significant advances in our understanding of this cosmetid genus and its subfamily. In this study, we further expand our knowledge by describing three new species of Paecilaemella from the Colombian (Paecilaemella andi sp. nov.) and Ecuadorian Amazon forest (Paecilaemella armasi sp. nov. and Paecilaemella geminorum sp. nov.). These th

Two new species of Goniosomatinae (Opiliones: Gonyleptidae) narrowly endemic to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil.

In the present work, two new species are described for the subfamily Goniosomatinae. Goniosoma bragagnolo sp. nov. is described from the seasonal semideciduous forests of Minas Gerais state and is distinguished from other species in the genus by a unique combination of features: a pair of small tubercles on the ocularium and on area III of the dorsal scutum, a complex dry mark on the dorsal scutum and the presence of a ventral process with a flabellum on the penis. Serracutisoma hara sp. nov. inhabits a cave in dense ombrophilous forests in Santa Catarina state and is considered to be part of

First Harvestman Record for the Juan Fernández Archipelago, Chile, with Morphological Notes on Acropsopilio chilensis (Opiliones: Caddidae: Acroposopilioninae).

Acropsopilio chilensis Silvestri, 1904 (Eupnoi: Caddidae: Acropsopilioninae), is recorded for Robinson Crusoe Island, Chile. This is the first harvestman species recorded for the Juan Fernández Archipelago and also the first extra-continental record for this species. During the comparison with continental co-specific specimens, some previously unknown, remarkable morphological characteristics were discovered, among them: the absence of ovipositor seminal receptacles and tracheal system, small and probably imperforate spiracles and the presence of a subdistal spiny structure, maybe a stylus, in

Seasonality of brown recluse spiders, Loxosceles reclusa, submitted by the general public: implications for physicians regarding loxoscelism diagnoses.

Many medically important animals exhibit fluctuating seasonal abundance such that risk from envenomation or disease is not constant throughout the year. As indicated by homeowner submissions, brown recluse spiders, Loxosceles reclusa, show seasonal peaks of activity during summer and paucity in winter. This information should be incorporated as part of the diagnostic algorithm for physicians when considering the probability of loxoscelism in endemic Loxosceles areas especially if a skin lesion occurs when spiders are scarce.

The occurrence of parasitic arthropods in two groups of European bison in the Białowieza primeval forest.

Within 1992-2000, a total of 181 Białowieza Forest bison were examined from two winter herds. Twelf parasitic arthropod species were observed, a high infestation being typical of Demodex bisonianius, Chorioptes bovis, Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus, and Bisonicola sedecimdecembrii. The infestation in section 422 herd being higher for B. sedecimdecembrii, I. ricinus, D. reticulatus, Ch. bovis. D. bisonianus was slightly more prevalent in the section 391 herd, the intensity being, however, lower than that in the other herd. Among the remaining arthropods found in the Bialowieza Forest E

New specimens of Bunaia woodwardi Clarke, 1919 (Euchelicerata): a new member of Offacolidae providing insight supporting the Arachnomorpha.

The rapid early diversification of arthropods has made understanding internal relationships within the group fiendish. Particularly unresolved is the origin of Euchelicerata, a clade consisting of the Prosomapoda (comprising the extant Xiphosura and Arachnida and the extinct Chasmataspidida, Eurypterida and synziphosurines) and the extinct Offacolidae. Here we describe new material of the Silurian 'synziphosurine' Bunaia woodwardi Clarke, 1919 that reveals previously unknown features of its ventral anatomy: a pair of elongated chelicerae in the prosoma, followed posteriorly by five pairs of bi

College Students' Knowledge of Ticks in Oklahoma: Assessment and Insights.

Ticks (Arachnida: Acari) are common in Oklahoma and may transmit tick-borne diseases (TBDs) to people. Due to the difficulty in reducing tick populations, awareness of tick bite prevention, proper tick removal, and knowledge of when to seek medical treatment are critical. However, outreach and extension programs are hampered by a lack of knowledge of what community members know about ticks. To address this limitation, we surveyed college students enrolled in three non-major Entomology courses at Oklahoma State University in 2018. Of the 483 students invited to take a survey, 224 (46.4%) studen

Detection and micro-scale isolation of a low molecular mass paralysis toxin from the tick, Argas (Persicargas) walkerae.

This study describes the isolation of a 11 kDa paralysis toxin from crude larval extracts of Argas (Persicargas) walkerae by exploiting the cross-reactivity of a monoclonal antibody (4B12), directed against the paralysis toxin of Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi. This low molecular mass is in contrast to previous findings of a 60-70 kDa toxin for A. (P.) walkerae, but is similar to neurotoxins isolated from venomous forms of the class Arachnida, which comprise the orders Araneae (spiders). Scorpionida (Scorpions) and Acari (ticks and mites). Since numerous antigenic bands, ranging between 11 and

Two new species of Rhaucus Simon, 1879 reveal putative synapomorphies related to the microstructural morphology of male genitalia (Opiliones: Cosmetidae).

Two new species of Rhaucus Simon, 1879 are described from Bolívar, Colombia: Rhaucus gaiterus sp. nov. and Rhaucus artifex sp. nov. Additionally, two species of Meterginus Pickard-Cambridge, 1905 are transferred to the genus Rhaucus based on genital and somatic characters, resulting in two new combinations: Rhaucus serratus (Roewer 1912) comb. nov. and Rhaucus marmoratus (Roewer 1912) comb. nov. Thus, the genus Rhaucus is currently represented by ten species. Structures related to the ventral macrosetae on the ventral plate of the penis are described and proposed as putative synapomorphies, ba

A look into the Medical and Veterinary Entomology crystal ball.

Medical and Veterinary Entomology (MVE) represents a leading periodical in its field and covers many aspects of the biology and control of insects, ticks, mites and other arthropods of medical and veterinary importance. Since the first issue of the journal, researchers working in both developed and developing countries have published in MVE, with direct impact on current knowledge in the field. An increasing number of articles dealing with the epidemiology and transmission of vector-borne pathogens have been published in MVE, reflecting rapid changes in vector distribution, pathogen transmissi

Wolbachia, sex ratio bias and apparent male killing in the harlequin beetle riding pseudoscorpion.

Bacterial endosymbionts that manipulate host reproduction are now known to be widespread in insects and other arthropods. Since they inhabit the cytoplasm and are maternally inherited, these microorganisms can enhance their fitness by biasing host sex ratio in favour of females. At its most extreme, sex ratio manipulation may be achieved by killing male embryos, as occurs in a number of insect species. Here, we provide evidence for the first case of male killing by a tetracycline-sensitive microbe in pseudoscorpions. Using a combination of inheritance studies, antibiotic treatment and molecula

Efficacy of neem oil (Azadirachta indica) as an antiparasitic treatment for scorpions (Androctonus bicolor) and its impact on venom production.

Mite infestations are a recurrent welfare issue that significantly affect the health, venom production, and survival of scorpions, particularly under human care. Chemical acaricides such as permethrins and fipronil, widely used in veterinary medicine for mite and tick control, are contraindicated in scorpions. Since mites and scorpions both belong to the class Arachnida, even minimal exposure can result in severe toxicity or death. Neem oil (Azadirachta indica) has been widely recognized for its acaricidal, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. Its main compound, azadirachtin, interferes w

The Ovary Structure in Terrestrial Parasitengona Mites: The Case of Trombidiidae (Acariformes: Parasitengona).

Species of mites (Chelicerata: Arachnida) show a great variety of structures of the female gonads. In both evolutionary lines, Acariformes and Parasitiformes, the panoistic ovary, in which all germline cysts differentiate into oocytes, and the meroistic ovary, in which the oocytes grow supported by the nurse cells, have been documented. A less pronounced variation in the gonad structure could be expected at lower systematic levels, hence, we ask about the degree of differences within the family that is subordinate to Acariformes and represents the cohort Parasitengona. Based on the members of

High throughput techniques to reveal the molecular physiology and evolution of digestion in spiders.

BACKGROUND: Spiders are known for their predatory efficiency and for their high capacity of digesting relatively large prey. They do this by combining both extracorporeal and intracellular digestion. Whereas many high throughput ("-omics") techniques focus on biomolecules in spider venom, so far this approach has not yet been applied to investigate the protein composition of spider midgut diverticula (MD) and digestive fluid (DF). RESULTS: We here report on our investigations of both MD and DF of the spider Nephilingis (Nephilengys) cruentata through the use of next generation sequencing and

A Coxiella-like endosymbiont is a potential vitamin source for the Lone Star tick.

Amblyomma americanum (Lone star tick) is an important disease vector in the United States. It transmits several human pathogens, including the agents of human monocytic ehrlichiosis, tularemia, and southern tick-associated rash illness. Blood-feeding insects (Class Insecta) depend on bacterial endosymbionts to provide vitamins and cofactors that are scarce in blood. It is unclear how this deficiency is compensated in ticks (Class Arachnida) that feed exclusively on mammalian blood. A bacterium related to Coxiella burnetii, the agent of human Q fever, has been observed previously within cells o

Genome sequencing and multi-stage, blood-feeding, and tissue-specific transcriptome atlas of the Rocky Mountain wood tick provide a critical resource for this vector.

Dermacentor andersoni, the Rocky Mountain wood tick, is an important vector for pathogens impacting human and animal health, including bovine anaplasmosis, Colorado tick fever, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. A better understanding of the biology of this tick is needed for developing disease prevention and vector control strategies. A reference genome was assembled for D. andersoni using high-fidelity (HiFi) long-read PacBio sequences and Hi-C contact mapping, yielding a contiguous assembly in which most contigs matched one of 11 chromosomes. Venom collection and analysis in the pseudoscorpion Chelifer cancroides (Pseudoscorpiones: Cheliferidae).

Pseudoscorpions are very small arthropods with almost worldwide distribution. They possess a unique venom delivery system in the chelal hands of their pedipalps that has evolved independently from that of scorpions and spiders. Studies on the venom composition of pseudoscorpions are very rare. Recently, the potential venom composition of the pseudoscorpion Synsphyronus apimelus Harvey, 1987 (Pseudoscorpiones: Garypidae) has been studied by transcriptome analysis. However, a proteome analysis of venom to identify the genuine venom compounds of pseudoscorpions has not yet been performed. In our
