Neural correlates of perceiving and interpreting engraved prehistoric patterns as human production: Effect of archaeological expertise.

It has been suggested that engraved abstract patterns dating from the Middle and Lower Palaeolithic served as means of representation and communication. Identifying the brain regions involved in visual processing of these engravings can provide insights into their function. In this study, brain activity was measured during perception of the earliest known Palaeolithic engraved patterns and compared to natural patterns mimicking human-made engravings. Participants were asked to categorise marks as being intentionally made by humans or due to natural processes (e.g. erosion, root etching). To si

New geochronological, paleoclimatological, and archaeological data from the Narmada Valley hominin locality, central India.

The oldest known fossil hominin in southern Asia was recovered from Hathnora in the Narmada Basin, central India in the early 1980's. Its age and taxonomic affinities, however, have remained uncertain. Current estimates place its maximum age at >236ka, but not likely older than the early middle Pleistocene. The calvaria, however, could be considerably younger. We report recent fieldwork at Hathnora and associated Quaternary type-sections that has provided new geological and archaeological insights. The portion of the exposed 'Boulder Conglomerate' within the Surajkund Formation, which forms a

Three thousand five hundred years of sheeppox virus evolution inferred from archaeological and codicological genomes.

Sheeppox virus (SPPV) is a major livestock pathogen causing economic hardship through reduced production and death of vulnerable sheep, with written descriptions of sheeppox-like disease recorded since antiquity. We report 21 novel ancient SPPV genomes spanning the Eurasian steppe Bronze Age (∼1700 BCE) to the Early Modern period in Western Europe, including multiple genomes obtained from medieval parchment. We estimate that major capripoxvirus lineages diverged ∼11,500 to 3700 years ago, overlapping known translocations and bio-cultural developments in sheep. Our dataset supports SPPV divergi

Early Stages of Metal Corrosion in Coastal Archaeological Sites: Effects of Chemical Composition in Silver and Copper Alloys.

In this study, metal disks with different chemical composition (two Ag-based alloys and three Cu-based alloys) were buried in the soil of coastal archaeological sites for a period of 15 years. The aim was to naturally induce the growth of corrosion patinas to obtain a deeper insight into the role of alloying elements in the formation of the patinas and into the degradation mechanisms occurring in the very early stages of burial. To reach the aim, the morphological, compositional and structural features of the patinas grown over 15 years were extensively characterized by optical microscopy, fie

Development of an analytical procedure for evaluation of the protective behaviour of innovative fungal patinas on archaeological and artistic metal artefacts.

In the literature, the ability to transform metal compounds into metal oxalates has been reported for different species of fungi. This could be an innovative conservation method for archaeological and artistic metal artefacts. In fact, with a high degree of insolubility and chemical stability even in acid atmospheres (pH 3), metal oxalates provide the surface with good protection. Within the framework of the EU-ARTECH project, different fungal strains have been used to transform existing corrosion patinas on outdoor bronze monuments into copper oxalates, while preserving the physical appearanc

Radiopurity assay of archaeological lead and related compounds for astroparticle physics by mass spectrometry and gamma-ray spectrometry.

A novel and rapid method is introduced for determining thorium (Th) and uranium (U) concentrations in archaeological lead and related compounds to be used in astroparticle physic. This method involves chromatographic pre-concentration and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Combined data from mass spectrometry and gamma-ray spectrometry measurements are presented. Excellent results were achieved in terms of reliability and sensitivity (ngˑkg-1), even without introducing Th and U isotopes as tracers.

First Study of Mercury Content in Archaeological Pottery: Late-Neolithic Penha-Type from NW Spain.

In soils, mercury is found bound to organic matter, clays, and iron/manganese oxides, which are also major constituents of archaeological pottery. Although pottery is the most researched cultural material with archaeometric techniques, its mercury content remains largely unexplored. To address this gap, we studied Late Neolithic Penha-type pottery from NW Spain. The Late Neolithic was a period of widespread exploitation and circulation of mercury-bearing resources. A total of 92 samples from five archaeological sites were analysed to determine their mercury, carbon, sulfur, and iron content, a

Human dissection and comparative anatomy: Archaeological evidence for nineteenth-century anatomical practice at University College London.

The history of anatomical dissection in nineteenth-century Britain has largely been reconstructed from archival sources, including legislation, institutional records and medical writings. Archaeological evidence for the material practices of anatomy schools, however, remains comparatively limited. In 2010, redevelopment within the main quadrangle of University College London (UCL) revealed a substantial assemblage of human and animal skeletal remains associated with the institution's early anatomy school. Excavation recovered more than 8700 human skeletal fragments and over 800 animal bones, t

The influence of ancient human occupation on the floristic composition of archaeological sites in Serra de Carajás, Pará, Brazil.

The high density of culturally relevant species is one example of the types of vegetation alterations that have been attributed to ancient human occupation and landscape management. This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of the current vegetation at Serra de Carajás and identify possible effects of ancient human interventions. Were inventoried slope forest and capão forest plots in 14 areas around archaeological sites, and in 15 areas without material culture. Differences in floristic compositions were tested by analyses of one-way PERMANOVA, MDS, SIMPER methods, and a partial Mantel

Silanes for conservation of archaeological woods using modeled birch wood: antifungal, physical-chemical and TGA studies.

Conservation of ancient wooden artifacts, in addition to consolidation advantage, prevent its deterioration over time. In this research, silane consolidants, including methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) with 25 wt% in ethanol were applied under controlled conditions on modeled birch wood (Betula pendula) as a conservation strategy for archeological woods in terrestrial environments. While the wood samples were gradually saturated and dried, aesthetics and cell-walls integrity were also considered. The leaching characteristics, visual and physical changes

Mass spectrometry measurements of mercury isotope ratios support geochemical sourcing of archaeological cinnabar in the Andean region.

Geochemical methods can identify the long-distance exchange of resources in the archaeological record. Cinnabar is a mineral with a limited number of geological sources; however, methods for determining the geological origin of cinnabar are constricted by the limited availability of comparative geological source materials. This study applies a multi-method approach to compare isotopic ratios of mercury and sulfur in archaeological specimens of cinnabar from museum collections and scientifically excavated materials from the Andes region of South America. We demonstrate that the δ202Hg to Δ199Hg

Paleopathological Changes in Animal Bones from Croatian Archaeological Sites from Prehistory to New Modern Period.

A special part of archaeology, so-called archaeozoopathology or veterinary paleopathology is dedicated to studies of paleopathological changes in animal remains and contributes to the knowledge of ancient veterinary medicine and the history of diseases. In our study, we analyze paleopathological changes determined by gross observation and diagnostic imaging in the animal material originating from eight archaeological sites in Croatia. A standard archaeozoological analysis was carried out and specimens with visually detected macrostructural changes were radiographed. In total, 50 animal remains

Ancient Echinostome Eggs Discovered in Archaeological Strata Specimens from a Baekje Capital Ruins of South Korea.

Echinostomiasis is prevalent in southeastern as well as northeastern Asian countries. This endemicity notwithstanding, no echinostome egg has as yet been reported by paleoparasitological studies conducted in Asian countries. Recently we analyzed geological-strata specimens retrieved from the ancient capital city of the Baekje Kingdom to uncover clues to the possible prevalence of echinostomiasis among contemporaneous populations of Korea. By means of archaeoparasitological technique, we found ancient Isthmiophora hortensis eggs in the specimens, thus revealing for the first time that ancient K

Use of high resolution computed tomography to diagnose ante-mortem dental root fractures in archaeological samples.

Dental root fractures are rarely documented in past human populations, but when they are observed, diagnosing ante-mortem events as causal factors can be difficult due to postmortem alteration. Can high resolution X-ray computed tomography (CT) improve our ability to diagnose if a dental fracture was caused ante- or post-mortem? To test this, a case study of two individuals with previously diagnosed dental root fractures were re-examined with high resolution CT to confirm or refute the original diagnoses. For individual 4170, use of high resolution CT supported the original diagnosis of an ant

Hydrogen isotopic analysis with a chromium-packed reactor of organic compounds of relevance to ecological, archaeological, and forensic applications.

RATIONALE: The δ(2) H values of some nitrogen-containing organic compounds measured by High-Temperature Conversion (HTC) with a glassy carbon reactor have been shown to be inaccurate. A probable explanation for these analytical inaccuracies is the formation of HCN, allowing some hydrogen atoms to escape isotope ratio measurement. We assess this isotopic effect in sample types commonly used for (paleo)ecological, environmental, archaeological, and forensic investigations. METHODS: The δ(2) HVSMOW-SLAP values and mass fraction H using a factory-recommended glassy carbon HTC reactor packing were

Craniomandibular trauma and tooth loss in northern dogs and wolves: implications for the archaeological study of dog husbandry and domestication.

Archaeological dog remains from many areas clearly show that these animals suffered tooth fractures, tooth loss, trauma, and dental defects during their lives. Relatively little research has explored the meanings of these patterns, particularly for ancient dog remains from small-scale societies of the North. One limiting issue is the lack of comparative data on dental health and experiences of trauma among northern wolves and dogs. This paper examines tooth loss, tooth fracture, enamel hypoplasia, and cranial trauma in a large sample of historic dog and wolf remains from North America and Nort

ArqPy: A Python Toolbox for Remote Sensing Image Preprocessing and AI-Assisted Interpretation of Derived Products for Archaeological Prospection.

Remote sensing is widely used in archaeology, but the lack of standardised and readily deployable preprocessing workflows limits reproducibility and cross-study comparability, particularly for very high-resolution multispectral imagery. This study presents ArqPy, a Python toolbox designed to automate and standardise image preprocessing, enhancement and initial interpretation for archaeological prospection. The toolbox includes atmospheric correction, conventional pansharpening, spectral indices, principal component analysis (PCA), and spatial filtering. Its object-oriented architecture current
