Traumatic upper extremity injuries: Analysis of correlation of mangled extremity severity score and disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand score.

BACKGROUND: The Mangled Extremity Severity Score is a decision-making tool for limb amputation after trauma. The Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire was developed to quantify posttraumatic functional deficits of the upper extremity. This study aims to determine the correlation between these two assessments. METHODS: In this study, a retrospective review of all patients with upper extremity injuries who had been treated with vascular reconstruction at two centres between 2005 and 2014 was performed. The respective Mangled Extremity Severity Score was calculated for each pa

Protective Arm of Renin-Angiotensin System: Evidence of Nephroprotective Effects Against Acute Kidney Injury.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a global health problem due to its high and increasing incidence, morbidity and mortality. Despite progress in understanding its pathophysiology, there are currently no pharmacological therapies that improve survival, limit damage, or accelerate recovery, except for supportive interventions and renal replacement therapies. Cumulative knowledge indicates that during AKI, the dynamic balance between the two arms of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is disturbed, activating the classical and reducing the protective arm. This imbalance determines pathophysiological outcom

Injury patterns and technique-specific determinants in competitive arm wrestling: implications for performance-oriented rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Arm wrestling is characterized by high torsional and compressive forces acting on the upper limb, predisposing athletes to both acute traumatic and overuse injuries. Despite increasing recognition of injury patterns, quantitative evaluation of technique-specific determinants and their relationship to injury localization remains limited. The aim of the study is to investigate the patterns and mechanisms of upper limb injuries in competitive arm wrestling and to identify technique- and experience-related determinants associated with injury occurrence. METHODS: A cross-sectional obse

Results of a National Survey on Sport Specialization Behavior and Throwing Arm Injury in Youth Softball Players.

BACKGROUND: There are few data on throwing arm and shoulder injury in youth softball athletes, and no data on the influence of sport specialization on injury in softball. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that highly specialized athletes, and pitchers in particular, demonstrating various sport specialization behaviors would be more likely to report an upper extremity overuse injury in the previous 12 months. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4. METHODS: An online, anonymous, cross-sectional survey was distributed to a national sample of female youth softball players

Postoperative mobilization after terrible triad injury: systematic review and single-arm meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Terrible triad injury is a complex injury of the elbow, involving elbow dislocation with associated fracture of the radial head, avulsion or tear of the lateral ulnar collateral ligament, and fracture of the coronoid. These injuries are commonly managed surgically with fixation or replacement of the radial head and repair of the collateral ligaments with or without fixation of the coronoid. Postoperative mobilization is a significant factor that may affect patient outcomes; however, the optimal postoperative mobilization protocol is unclear. This study aimed to systematically revie

Modulation of corticospinal input to the legs by arm and leg cycling in people with incomplete spinal cord injury.

The spinal cervico-lumbar interaction during rhythmic movements in humans has recently been studied; however, the role of arm movements in modulating the corticospinal drive to the legs is not well understood. The goals of this study were to investigate the effect of active rhythmic arm movements on the corticospinal drive to the legs (study 1) and assess the effect of simultaneous arm and leg training on the corticospinal pathway after incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI) (study 2). In study 1, neurologically intact (NI) participants or participants with iSCI performed combinations of station

Segmental Momentum Sequencing: Implication for Injury and Performance Between Collegiate Pitchers With Different Arm Slots.

BACKGROUND: Baseball pitching requires precise coordination of the upper extremities to generate and transfer angular momentum efficiently while minimizing joint loading. Although the importance of temporal sequencing is recognized, few studies have examined how segmental momentum sequences vary across arm slot styles. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the temporal sequence of peak angular momentum across segments and determine its capacity to predict ball velocity and upper extremity joint loading among overhead (OH), three-quarter (QT), and sidearm (SA) collegiate pitchers

Patterns and outcomes of abdominal wound injuries in Sudanese armed conflict survivors: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: On April 15, 2023, the people of Khartoum were woken by the drums of war. The armed conflict resulted in >1200 reported fatalities and over 12 000 injuries. The abdomen, housing vital organs and lacking protective bony structures, is highly vulnerable in such settings. Understanding abdominal wound injuries (AWIs) is essential for improving management and outcomes. This study aimed to analyze the patterns and outcomes of AWIs among survivors of the Sudanese armed conflict. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at Wad Madni Teaching Hospital, Gezira State, Sud

Simultaneous bilateral "floating arm" of the humeri: an uncommon presentation of a rare complex injury and review of the literature.

The timing of definitive fixation for simultaneous fractures of the humerus in polytrauma patient is controversial. We report on the management of a patient that sustained bilateral "floating arm" fractures of the humeri. When dealing with such injury patterns, it is important to always carry out stabilization of the humeral diaphysis first and afterwards to treat the sub-injury or over-injury fractures. Our patient healed after twelve weeks in both humeri. After seven years MEPS showed excellent and good results in the right and left arms, while UCLA scores proved excellent in both sides. We

The role of arm volumes evaluation in the functional outcome and patient satisfaction following surgical repair of the brachial plexus traumatic injuries.

OBJECTIVE: Brachial plexus injuries are among the most complex injuries of the peripheral nervous system and among the most devastating injuries overall. In complete lesions, functional priorities include the reinnervation of the musculocutaneous and axillary nerves for proximal functions restoration. Three major nerves - radial, median, and ulnar - and the corresponding muscles remain denervated, which results in subsequent muscle atrophy. This study was aimed at the evaluation of arm volumes in surgically treated patients with brachial plexus injuries, in correlation with the type of palsy,

Does the disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand (DASH) scoring system only measure disability due to injuries to the upper limb?

Although the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire was designed, and has been validated, as a measure of disability in patients with disorders of the upper limb, the influence of those of the lower limb on disability as measured by the DASH score has not been assessed. The aim of this study was to investigate whether it exclusively measures disability associated with injuries to the upper limb. The Short Musculoskeletal Functional Assessment, a general musculoskeletal assessment instrument, was also completed by participants. Disability was compared in 206 participant
