The high prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV) in armed conflict has been documented in various national contexts, but less is known about the complex pathways that constitute the relation between the two. Employing a community-based collaborative approach, we constructed a community-informed socioecological conceptual model from a feminist perspective, detailing how armed conflict relates to GBV in a conflict-affected rural community in Northeastern Uganda. The research questions were as follows: (1) How does the community conceptualize GBV? and (2) How does armed conflict relate to GBV?

PURPOSE: In 2022, "Paz Total" (Comprehensive Peace) was established as the federal Colombian policy to address violence and armed conflict. We examine the intensity of risk for exposure to violence against civilians, battles, and explosions from 2021 to 2025 for adolescents and young adults in Colombian departments with historically high, medium, and low levels of violence.
METHODS: Data are from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project. Analyses were conducted with six repeated-measures analysis of variance models. Intensity of risk for exposure to violent events or fatalities was

Traumatic war events can impair healthcare workers' psychological well-being. We assessed resilience, attendance and perceived sense of danger among Sudanese healthcare workers in active conflict zones. A cross-sectional study (January-March 2025) was conducted in four Omdurman public hospitals involving doctors, nurses, lab technicians and pharmacists. We used a self-administered questionnaire assessing sociodemographics, trauma, resilience (Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-10), sense of danger (Solomon and Prager) and attendance. Data were analyzed using SPSS v27 (p < 0.05). Among 325 partic

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major global health issue, particularly in countries with armed conflict, a poor health-care system, and low-income populations. The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics, diagnostic approaches, and reported barriers to healthcare access among TB patients managed at El-Obeid Teaching Hospital during three years of the armed conflict (2023 to 2026) in the war zone.
METHODOLOGY: Between April 2023 and April 2026, a descriptive, prospective hospital-based study was conducted in El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, Sudan. The study

BACKGROUND: The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) faces a "triple burden" of public health threats which includes climate change, protracted armed conflict, and the under-recognized spread of arboviral diseases. Arboviruses, such as dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever, are transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Certain factors, like environmental changes, population displacement, and inadequate vector control, have created conditions that favor sustained transmission.
METHODS: The narrative review was conducted to compile evidence on factors influencing arbovir

This study explores the potential impact of war on STI services in Lebanon. Programmatic STI service data from Lebanon were analyzed, alongside a targeted review of the literature on conflict-affected settings, using public health databases covering the period 2014-2024. Evidence-based STI service packages for conflict settings remain limited. Drawing insights from the COVID-19 crisis, periods of emergencies are associated with an elevated risk of STI surges among key populations. Programmatic data from the conflict further demonstrated this increased risk, reflected in reductions in preventio

The two-year armed conflict in the Tigray Region of Northern Ethiopia (2020-2022) created a humanitarian crisis marked by widespread sexual violence, healthcare disruption, and displacement of health personnel. However, reliable epidemiological evidence on the contribution of conflict-related sexual violence to HIV transmission remains scarce. This study addresses this gap by quantifying the impact of conflict-related rape on HIV incidence and prevalence in Tigray. A dynamic risk equation model was developed to capture HIV transmission during conflict. In this framework, conflict intensity inf

BACKGROUND: Over 630 million women and children worldwide have been displaced by conflict or live dangerously close to conflict zones. While the adverse effects of physical destruction on healthcare delivery are relatively well understood, the effects on healthcare-seeking behavior remain underexplored, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This study aims to better understand the interconnections and knowledge gaps between exposure to armed violent conflicts and healthcare-seeking behaviors for maternal and child health in sub-Saharan Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Armed conflict worldwide and across history has harmed the health of populations directly and indirectly, including generations beyond those immediately exposed to violence. The 2020 war between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, inhabited by an ethnically Armenian population, provides an example of how conflict harmed health during COVID-19. We hypothesised that crises exposure would correspond to decreased healthcare utilisation rates and worse health outcomes for the maternal and infant population in Armenia, compounded during the pandemic.
METHODS: Following a mix

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: High-velocity weapons were used against unshielded civilians during the Syrian armed conflict, leading to a variety of combat-related traumatic brain injuries with high fatality and morbidity. Because of the lack of data in the literature about the management and outcomes of similar injuries, we aimed in this study to characterize shrapnel and gunshot injuries in this vulnerable group and to describe the association between the mechanisms, site, and type of injury and the outcomes.
METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective cohort study on new traumatic brain i

BACKGROUND: The Latin American military vascular trauma is virtually unknown. The aim of this study was to describe severe war vascular trauma during the last 20 years of the Colombian armed conflict, and to identify predictors of limb amputation.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of a follow-up cohort from 1999 to 2019 of patients with associated severe vascular injuries (ISS >15) in the Colombian armed conflict treated at the Hospital Militar Central.
RESULTS: Out of 5948 patients, 243 had military vascular trauma with 430 vascular injuries. The most frequent trauma mechanisms were gunshot w

BACKGROUND: Armed conflicts have major indirect health impacts in addition to the direct harms from violence. They create enduring political instability, destabilise health systems, and foster negative socioeconomic and environmental conditions-all of which constrain efforts to reduce maternal and child mortality. The detrimental impacts of conflict on global maternal and child health are not robustly quantified. This study assesses the association between conflict and maternal and child health globally.

In 1988, the Regional Committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Eastern Mediterranean Region adopted a resolution to eliminate poliomyelitis from the region by 2000. Somalia and parts of southern Sudan have persons living in areas where there is ongoing armed conflict and poor infrastructure (e.g., health-care facilities, schools, roads, and power plants). Under these conditions, conducting National Immunization Days (NIDs) and acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance is difficult. This report summarizes NIDs in Somalia during 1997 and 1998 and in southern Sudan during 1998 an

INTRODUCTION: Armed conflict disrupts maternity care and exposes pregnant women to substantial physical, psychological, and social risks. Although increasing evidence has documented the effects of armed conflict on maternal health, little is known about the lived experiences of displaced pregnant women during the ongoing armed conflict in Gaza. This study explored the lived experiences of displaced pregnant women living in Gaza.
METHODS: A descriptive phenomenological qualitative study was conducted with 25 displaced pregnant women residing in the Gaza Strip. Data were collected through semi-

BACKGROUND: The current European political security environment is very tense due to the return of conventional and hybrid warfare. National and collective defence have again become key political tasks. In this context, the resilience of the healthcare system, understood as critical infrastructures contributing to social cohesion, institutional trust and democratic stability, have moved to center stage. Orthopedics and trauma surgery (O&U) are central to injury care, while palliative medicine represents an essential component of humane and functional healthcare provision in crises and armed co

Weapon detonations generate substantial quantities of post-blast residue (PBR), which contributes iron-rich particles to soils. After deposition, these residues undergo redox transformations that produce bioavailable iron compounds, potentially increasing phytotoxic risks to agricultural crops. In the present study, soil contamination by detonation of military weapons was simulated by adding 1% of < 1 mm PBR to soil, and iron mobilization under waterlogged conditions was subsequently monitored. Scanning electron microscopy revealed two components in PBR: iron-bearing spherules and metallic fra

Wars and armed conflicts are among the most critical crises that can severely impact a country's vital infrastructures, particularly the health system. During wartime, health systems face major challenges, including attacks on healthcare facilities and personnel, which disrupt access to services and undermine public health. This study aims to conduct a scoping review to assess reported international strategies for wartime health system management, focusing on resource allocation, workforce distribution, financing, and access to essential supplies, followed by a document review of Iranian exper

Invasive candidiasis (IC), characterized by the most common clinical manifestation of candidemia, is a fungal infection with a high mortality rate and a significant impact on global public health. It is estimated that each year there are between 227,000 and 250,000 hospitalizations related to IC, with more than 100,000 associated deaths. In Latin America and the Caribbean (LA&C), the absence of a standardized surveillance system has led to multicenter studies documenting incidences ranging from 0.74 to 6.0 cases per 1000 hospital admissions, equivalent to 50,000-60,000 hospitalizations annuall

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases represent a major global health burden, with their impact becoming even more pronounced in conflict settings. In such environments, the mental health and quality of life of chronic disease patients often deteriorate due to the disruptions caused by war. This study aimed to assess mental health issues among chronic disease patients and evaluate their quality of life during the ongoing armed conflict in Sudan.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among chronic disease patients in the safest states of Sudan during the current war. Mental health was assessed
